Chapter 10 - Desperate

Jack walked down the loud and bustling city street, his footsteps were heavy and filled with dread. He was a young man, healthy and smart with his whole life ahead of him, but his world felt so dark. He had finally managed to save up enough money and been able to move out of his family's home, but now those savings were running low. Doing odd jobs and errands wasn't enough to cover his living expenses and rent. He wasn't getting enough work. He was from the common class, the middle class, and he had a good education considering that, he was lucky in a way. But after receiving a general education, he had wanted to leave home, live on his own, away from his parents. He took on as much work as he could find, but realized that if he wanted to provide for himself with out his parents funding he would need a higher level job and a specific education. Those types of jobs were for people from the upper class that were given the job because they were also from the upper class or because they had received a college education. Quickly Jack learned that to be paid well he needed higher education. From what he could save up he was able to take some night classes and learned accounting, hoping that he would be able to get a job at an accounting firm, having always enjoyed maths and numbers. But even after that, no one was interested in hiring him long term because of his background. It didn't make them look good to have a common class working with them when they wanted to attract high-class elite customers. So, while they would hire him temporarily if they were short-handed, it never lasted long. No matter how good he was or how hard he worked, it didn't matter. What it came down to was the company image. They would have kept him for janitorial work, or as a night guard, but not if he wanted to be an actual accountant there. He had been hired quietly and then let go from so many accounting firms even he didn't want to count anymore. No one wanted someone handling their money who had hardly any money of his own. It didn't seem right to them. Rich people should handle other rich peoples people's money…what would a commoner know about money anyway, besides that they didn't have any? Jack had heard these types of jokes at every place he worked. It didn't matter how smart he was or dedicated, it all came down to social class. For now he had to give up his idea of becoming a steady accountant. His savings were running low and without them he would have to return to living with his family and there was no way he would ever go back there, not after what had happened. Honestly, he doubted if they would ever allow him back anyway. He clinched his fists and thought 'I can never go back there, no matter what, I will find a way, not to go back'. No matter the type of job that came his way, he had to take it. Until he had saved up enough to feel secure, and then maybe he would risk his luck finding another accounting job.

With his already scarce coins, he paid a nearby paper boy for the daily paper. He needed to scour the help-wanted ads for the highest paying job he could find and when he was eventually fired from that, he would just work his way down the list.

Jack went to the nearest bench he could find to sit and focus on his job hunting. He opened the paper and started to read the 'Help Wanted' advertisements. His eyes immediately fell upon an advertisement written in bold lettering that read

Urgent! Help Wanted! Desperate!

Chaperone/Mediator/Bodyguard

Travel! All expenses paid! High wage and negotiable! No experience needed or required

Please contact Lord Albert Herrington, LO-3473/32-6437

Jack scoffed, this had to be some type of scam. There is no way that the ad could be real, it seemed way too good to be true, there had to be some type of scam where they trick you and take all your money…But….If Jack already had virtually no money at all, was he really at risk or in any type of danger? Plus, if they did try anything funny or tried to rob him he did have some experience of fighting, experience that he was neither happy about or proud of, but he would definitely be able to hold his own in a fight. Jack sighed…There was no way this could be a real request, otherwise it would be snapped up already. But then again..beggars can't be choosers. He had literally no other options and if he didn't find work soon he would become an actual beggar. As Jack was sitting contemplating whether or not he should bother looking into it, there were group of people near him also reading the paper and they started to laugh and discuss the same advert, and even though he knew it was rude, Jack couldn't help but eavesdrop on the conversation. Maybe he could gather information about if it was real or not. The people discussing nearby were loudly speaking and laughing.

"It looks like Lord Herrington still hasn't found anyone to take the job yet" the people all burst out laughing again. "His advert gets more and more desperate by the week!" There was more laughter and snickering and Jack tried to listen as closely as possible without being obvious. "Hahah! It's his own fault for letting his daughter run wild" A woman spoke up. "He would probably pay any salary at this point, but no gentleman or lady would ever want to be around her, I don't care how much money he has, it will never be worth it." They continued laughing and chattering to themselves. Jack, who had been listening very intently, had heard exactly what he needed to the key words he took away from hearing all that were: job, desperate, pay, salary and money. That was all he needed to hear. With that he had finally decided, 'hmm…well it is at least worth an interview.' Having officially made up his mind, he quickly went to the nearest phone booth to make the call. Who knew how long the job would stay available? He was so eager that he didn't finish reading the small print. If he had, he might've seen the small words at the bottom of the article saying.

May be involved in mild danger.

Must be reasonably strong minded and not easily susceptible to manipulation.
