Chapter 3 - Golden Lotus Sect

The Grand Hall of the Golden Lotus Sect was more than just an impressive structure; it was a living embodiment of the devotion and dedication of countless generations of cultivators.

The soaring spires, reaching high into the sky like hands stretched in prayer, seemed to connect the earth to the heavens, their golden rooftops sparkling under the warm sun like jewels in a crown.

The sacred lotus pond at the heart of the courtyard rippled with tranquil energy, its pristine waters reflecting the sect's unmatched serenity and discipline.

Disciples moved through the courtyard, their blue and white robes flowing gracefully, reminiscent of the delicate petals of a lotus flower.

Wei Zheng walked through the bustling courtyard, his bloodstained robes starkly contrasting the pristine garments around him. His steady gait betrayed none of the turmoil he felt.

Despite his outward calm, the recent confrontation with Bai Renshu and the Abyss's awakening weighed heavily on his mind.

Eyes followed him as he passed. His reputation as one of his sect's finest swordsmen was no secret, and his disheveled appearance only fueled whispers.

"Senior Brother Wei!"

Yue Lian's voice rang out as she hurried towards him, her usual energy evident in every step. Her pale blue robe flowed softly around her, the silver embroidery at the hem shimmering in the light, adding a lively touch to her slender silhouette.

She had tied her long brown hair into a loose side braid, but a few unruly strands had escaped, falling gracefully around her face and adding a touch of charm to her soft features.

"You look terrible," she remarked, stopping before him.

Her warm brown eyes sparkled with both concern and mischief. "What happened out there? Did you wrestle a demon horde or trip on your own ego?"

"...Something like that," Wei Zheng replied, disinterested.

The teasing comment ignited a spark of annoyance within him, as it seemed to diminish the weight of the moment he had just endured. Her smirk only deepened his irritation.

"You're nosy." Wei Zheng commented, the flatness of his tone keeping her at bay.

She raised an eyebrow. "How rude. But it's good that you're back, just in time for whatever mess the elders are about to drop on us."

Before Wei Zheng could respond, the resonant toll of the sect's sacred gong echoed through the courtyard. Conversations stopped, and all eyes turned toward the Grand Hall.

---

Inside the Grand Hall, disciples stood in organized rows beneath the watchful gaze of the sect elders. The chamber's walls bore intricate carvings of golden lotuses, their petals glowing softly with ethereal light.

At the far end, the elders sat on a raised platform, their robes of white and gold shimmering like divine mantles.

At the center stood Elder Yan, the sect leader. His long silver beard and piercing gaze gave him an air of timeless wisdom. His voice carried authority that silenced the hall.

"Listen closely, disciples of the Golden Lotus Sect," Elder Yan began, his voice severe but steady.

"A shadow is creeping through the northern provinces. Villages disappear overnight, and some unseen force takes their people. We've received troubling reports that suggest the Abyss is at work."

A murmur rippled through the gathered disciples. The Abyss was a name that chilled even the most seasoned cultivators.

Elder Yan raised a hand, and the murmurs ceased. "Our sect cannot stand idle. We must act swiftly to uncover the truth and protect the realms. Reconnaissance teams will be dispatched to the north at once."

He paused, his sharp gaze sweeping across the room.

"This is not a task we undertake alone. The other three Great Sects, the Azure Sky Sect, the Radiant Flame Sect, and the Celestial Cloud Sect, are also participating. Each of these esteemed sects will send their finest disciples to investigate these disturbances. It is a call to unity but also a test of resolve."

The air grew heavier with his following words, the weight of responsibility settling on the shoulders of every disciple present.

"Our Golden Lotus Sect has stood for centuries as a beacon of righteousness, wisdom, and strength. We must ensure that our light does not falter in this growing darkness. Let it be our disciples who uncover the truth, stand at the forefront of this battle, and preserve the honor and legacy of the Golden Lotus."

Wei Zheng felt a subtle ripple of pride stir in the room. The rivalry between the four Great Sects was no secret, but it was not born of petty competition.

It was a shared understanding that their collective strength upheld the balance of the Nine Realms. Yet, within that unity, every sect sought to prove its worth, to show why their teachings and discipline stood unmatched.

Elder Yan's eyes softened slightly, though his voice retained its clarity.

"This is not about glory alone but about fulfilling our duty to the people of this land. Remember that we serve the realms, not ourselves. Our actions will determine whether peace is preserved or chaos reigns."

Yue Lian whispered loud enough for Wei Zheng and Lu Feng to hear, "No pressure, huh?"

Lu Feng shot her a warning look, but Wei Zheng remained focused on Elder Yan. The elder's words burned in his chest, igniting a sense of purpose that drowned out the lingering doubts from his last battle.

He couldn't let his personal feelings cloud his path now, not when so much was at stake.

Elder Yan turned his gaze to Wei Zheng.

"Wei Zheng."

Wei Zheng stepped forward, bowing deeply.

"Elder."

"You have faced the Abyss before," Elder Yan said. "You understand its danger better than most. You will lead this mission."

"I will not fail," Wei Zheng replied firmly.

"You will not go alone," Elder Yan continued. "Yue Lian, your knowledge of seals and ancient texts will be indispensable."

Yue Lian joined him with a confident smirk.

"Lu Feng, your defensive expertise will ensure the team's safety."

Lu Feng stepped forward. A towering figure with broad shoulders, he radiated a quiet strength. His dark blue robes were edged with white, and his closely cropped hair gave him a stern, no-nonsense appearance.

Known for his unwavering temperament, Lu Feng is a master of barrier formations and defensive techniques, often called the sect's immovable wall.

"Lin Shuyi, your skills in tracking and reconnaissance will guide the team."

Lin Shuyi emerged from the crowd with measured steps. Her dark blue robes, adorned with sharp white patterns resembling the jagged peaks of distant mountains, perfectly fit her lean, athletic build.

There was an air of cool confidence about her, accentuated by her piercing green eyes that seemed to absorb every detail around her. A skilled tracker and hunter, Lin Shuyi's ability to move unseen and analyze terrain made her invaluable on any mission.

"Xiang Ru, your mastery of spirit talismans will provide critical support."

Xiang Ru, a younger disciple, joined the group with his trademark grin, starkly contrasting the somber atmosphere surrounding them. Dressed in a rich blue robe adorned with intricate, glowing sigils, he radiated vitality as the symbols pulsed softly, giving the impression of being alive.

He had a reputation for getting into trouble, earning the nickname "The Trickster" among the other disciples. Despite his mischievous nature, his sharp intellect and nimble fingers allowed him to create unique talismans and clever traps that helped him escape whatever sticky situation he got himself in.

"Hua Jin, your medicinal alchemy and healing expertise will ensure your team's survival."

Hua Jin approached with the grace of a flowing stream. Her pale blue robes bore delicate lotus petal designs that shimmered faintly under the hall's light. She had neatly pinned her dark hair into an intricate bun, and the soft clinking of the vials secured to her belt hinted at her readiness.

Though her serene expression rarely changed, her reputation as a healer was unmatched, and her elixirs had saved countless lives in seemingly hopeless situations.

"And finally, Zhao Jianhong, your battle strength and knowledge of the North will anchor this team."

Zhao Jianhong confidently stepped forward, his indigo-blue robe vivid against the surrounding blues and whites. His robes were detailed with bold silver etchings of storm clouds, emphasizing his reputation for explosive power in battle.

He was broad-shouldered, with a confident gait that bordered on swagger. His short, wavy black hair had streaks of silver, giving him a distinctive, almost electrifying appearance that matched his personality. His sharp jawline and lively hazel eyes carried a warmth and charisma that made him impossible to ignore.

"Finally, some action!" Zhao Jianhong declared, his voice carrying a rich, booming quality that filled the hall.

"Sitting around meditating isn't my style, anyway. You can count on me to keep this team standing, no matter what's out there."

He grinned, looking around at his new teammates and lingering on Lin Shuyi. "Don't worry, Shuyi, I'll take the hits, and you can keep hiding in the shadows. It's a good system."

Lin Shuyi gave him a frosty look but said nothing.

"Don't let his theatrics fool you," Xiang Ru said, smirking.

"Jianhong's as good with strategy as he is with swinging those blades around. If you let him, he might even surprise you with an idea or two."

"'Might?'" Zhao Jianhong raised an eyebrow, placing a hand on one of his twin sabers. "Don't downplay me, Ru. I don't just swing. I win."

Hua Jin sighed, adjusting the vials on her belt. "As long as you don't drag us into unnecessary fights, I don't care how loud you are. Just don't make my job harder."

Wei Zheng watched the exchange, quietly assessing. While Zhao Jianhong's energy was boundless and his confidence unshakable, Wei Zheng knew the man's bravado wasn't without merit.

He had fought alongside him once before, and the man's combination of strength, quick thinking, and ability to inspire those around him had turned the tide of a near-hopeless battle.

"Zhao Jianhong," Wei Zheng said, raising an eyebrow as he looked at him. "This mission requires focus, not just strength. Are you prepared for that?"

Zhao Jianhong gave a mock salute, though his grin softened into something more serious. "You lead, Wei Zheng, I'll follow. But if things get dicey, I'll make sure no one regrets having me on this team."

The group was complete.

Wei Zheng was their steady leader, always maintaining a clear vision of their goals.

Lin Shuyi, the scout, had an air of cool efficiency; she could read the surroundings like a book.

Xiang Ru was a clever talisman expert whose questionable methods could save them in tricky situations.

Hua Jin, the healer, had a calming presence; her skills were a balm for both body and spirit.

Zhao Jianhong, the bold fighter, brought a relentless energy that motivated everyone to push forward no matter the challenge.

Yue Lian, the vibrant scholar, always had insightful perspectives that helped them strategize.

Last but not least, Lu Feng was a dependable protector; his quiet strength assured the team that they could face any threat together.

Elder Yan surveyed the assembled group. "This team represents the best of the Golden Lotus Sect. Auxiliary teams will support you in securing the surrounding villages and reinforcing barriers. Together, you will light the path forward. The Abyss is cunning, but our light shall prevail."

The disciples saluted in unison, their voices echoing through the hall.

As preparations began, Wei Zheng stood alone by the sacred lotus pond, its waters glowing faintly in the moonlight.

The breeze disturbed the surface, and his reflection wavered, mirroring his thoughts.

Yue Lian appeared beside him, her presence as familiar as the breeze.

"You've been standing here a while," she said.

"I was thinking," Wei Zheng replied, his tone distant.

"You always are," she teased, though her smile softened. "But we've got a solid team. Whatever's out there, we'll handle it together."

Wei Zheng glanced at her, then beyond her to where the rest of the team gathered in the distance.

Lu Feng stood silently, inspecting his barrier artifacts with a furrowed brow. Lin Shuyi sharpened her daggers with meticulous precision, her eyes focused and determined. Xiang Ru was adjusting a talisman array, his fingers moving deftly, while Hua Jin tested the contents of her vials, her expression calm but resolute.

"Together," Wei Zheng echoed, gripping the hilt of his sword.

The north awaited, its secrets hidden in shadow. Whatever lay ahead, the disciples of the Golden Lotus Sect would face it with unwavering resolve.
