[Notice. Recovery process completed]
Felix opened his eyes to the following notifications.
His soulless eyes reflected the blue screen momentarily before he closed it.
He was back in his sci-fi cell, bound by the nanites.
"Hah… life is fucked up," Felix muttered weakly as he tried to smile but could barely raise the corner of his lips.
He felt empty inside.
It was his first time killing and the fact that he killed helpless humans and even absorbed their souls… left a bad taste on his palate.
[Notice. Host's mental state is under immense strain. I advise that you enter hibernation to cool off]
"Hibernation?" Felix repeated the word before sighing wistfully. "I don't think sleeping would help much, Aya."
Just then, the door to his cell slid open and Dyara walked in accompanied by Nathan.
"Well hello," Dyara said smilingly. It seemed like she was greeting an old friend.
Felix did not attempt to speak as he stared at her, his eyes narrowed into slits.
Dyara pursed her lips. "You haven't learned your lesson from the last time?"
Still no response.
"Hah, you need conditioning." Dyara sighed helplessly as she reached out and the same bat as last time was formed from the ground.
Unlike last time though, Felix barely reacted to it as he kept his eyes on it for a moment before returning his attention to Dyara.
Dyara frowned at the nonchalance displayed.
She took a few steps forward until she was within arm's length.
She reached out to stroke Felix's cheek but the moment her hand got close, the latter attacked.
Like a rabid dog, he opened his mouth and tried to chew off her hand.
Midway through though something caused Felix to cease his violent act but the hatred in his eyes remained causing
Dyara to quickly retract her hand before glaring at Felix.
He retained the cold look in his eyes as he remarked. "Don't touch me..."
No fear, no hesitation.
He cared less if he died at this point.
The anger, pain… everything he felt made him detached from his usual self.
"You bastard!" Dyara exclaimed. "Who do you think you are!"
Without warning, she struck Felix with the bat.
He trembled aggressively while struggling to keep his screams inside.
Just as he was reaching his limit, a notification came.
[Congratulations host, Pain tolerance has evolved into Pain resistance]
[Congratulations to host for achieving his first Evolution]
[Your status has risen]
The next moment, Felix felt his body become light before the pain he was experiencing from the bat disappeared like a lie.
It's not like his body wasn't suffering damage, it's just that he couldn't feel it.
He dropped his head making it look like he had fainted from the torture.
Dyara pulled back the bat, clicking her tongue as she turned to leave.
"Is that it?"
She paused in her footsteps before slowly turning back.
Felix chuckled. "I expected more."
Dyara looked at him in disbelief.
How did he survive a round under the effects of Nerve?
It was a weapon specially designed to attack the nervous system, causing a person to experience different levels of pain in one go.
There hadn't been a case of a human withstanding the effects.
Even Nathan was shocked as he knew that he wouldn't survive if he were in the same situation.
Felix could care less for their reactions as he revealed a mocking smile. "You'd best kill me now, else if I ever escape these restraints… I will kill you."
"You…" Dyara lost her composure as she attacked Felix randomly with the bat.
By the time she stopped, Felix had been struck a total of a hundred times.
His lips were swollen, same with his eyelid and nose but he didn't release a peep.
He kept that mocking smile on his face which looked quite comical due to his bloated lips.
Dyara glared at Felix for a few seconds before her lips suddenly curved up in a smile.
"Finally…"
For the first time, Felix's expression froze at the unexpected response.
He expected her to kill him, instead, she seemed grateful for something.
Had she lost a screw out of anger?
"You are worth it," Dyara muttered. "If it's you… you might be able to do it."
"What are you…"
"7 days."
Dyara cut Felix off, causing the latter to frown.
"Huh."
"7 days," Dyara repeated before adding. "Recover within that period and I will grant you your wish of Absolution and becoming my retainer."
Felix was left speechless.
What the hell was happening?
Dyara threw the bat to the ground and it was quickly absorbed back.
She turned her back to Felix and made her way out of his cell.
"Take care of him." She said to Nathan before the door closed behind her.
Nathan took a deep breath.
He found himself among two crazy people.
He just couldn't guess their next move and it left him quite unnerved.
Taking a second to come to terms with his new assignment, he glanced at Felix. "I know you must have bad blood against me…"
"Why should I?" Felix cut him off, catching him off guard.
"Then…"
"You have your family to take care of." Felix continued. "I will bear the sins of killing those innocents so you don't have to worry."
Nathan found himself unable to speak further.
What was there to say again?
He had survived for so long by trying to be apathetic to what happened to fellow humans that were treated as slaves and forced to go through so much.
Since he couldn't do anything to help them because of his family, he could at least assist the one that could.
It wouldn't be too late to pull out if something went wrong later… right?
"If you want to have a chance in the Absolution, you'll at least need a basic combat manual… I'll get one for you." After squeezing out the words, Nathan turned to leave. "I'll get you something to eat now."
With that, the cell door closed leaving Felix alone once again.
