Chapter 45 - Stuck between a boulder and a hard place

"Fine, but don't take too long."

Hao Yu felt a migraine hitting his head. Talking to this person was more exhausting than anything that he's ever done!

"Right, I wanted to talk to you about something else."

God, no...

However what she took out was his book. "Dream of feather."

His eyes blinked for a second.

"W-why are you showing me this?"

"I said it didn't I? Our fate is inseparable. I know you wrote this. I liked this book and so I wanted to ask you about it."

"You liked it?"

She nodded and had a somber look. "Can you read it to me?"

With the sudden request, he felt troubled. On one hand, these books were just past time hobbies. On another, he felt happy that someone liked his work.

But to read it to them?

That's kind of....

He looked back to Feng Jia who was looking at the book cover with a sense of sadness.

"Alright~" he gave in. As much as he didn't want to get involved with her, he felt a sense of bitterness in his heart if she left while looking like that.

"Come in–"

Before he had even finished inviting her in, she strode past him, poured tea for herself, and was seated waiting for him.

"–make yourself at home...." he muttered to himself.

Sitting on the opposite side of Feng Jia, she glared at him.

He looked up and noticed the glare, "Whats wrong?"

She patted next to her.

Hao Yu immediately refuse. "That's inappropriate–"

"Do you want to sit here, or do you want me to come to you?"

Hao Yu's face twitched. "Neither."

Feng Jia nodded, "Then I'll come to you."

Hao Yu immediately took five steps back. "Stay right where you are!"

She let out a small laugh. "Why are you acting like a maiden?"

"I'm acting like a man trying to preserve his dignity!"

She patted the spot next to her again. "Come sit."

"No."

"Then I'll–"

A knock on the door interrupted their conversation.

"Hao Yu? Are you there?"

Su Su's voice eloquently entered the room.

At the first sign of escape, Hao Yu stood up and opened the door despite Feng Jia's glare.

"Hao Yu? Why do you look like you just survived a war?"

"No reason. Come in!"

Su Su peeked over his shoulder and spotted Feng Jia with crossed arms. Her glare sharp as a blade.

"Oh my, am I interrupting you?" she asked nicely.

Hao Yu and Feng Jia spoke at the same time, "No! / Yes."

Su Su gasped dramatically as she sat right where Hao Yu had sat, "Oh dear, a disagreement so soon? How tragic!"

Hao Yu felt the tension in the room.

For the first time, he was genuinely glad that Su Su was here to fight off the other threat.

Let the dragon fight the tiger. Leave me out of it.

"Husband–"

"Miss. You and Hao Yu aren't married, you shouldn't be saying such treacherous things~"

"He's already agreed."

Hao Yu opened his eyes widely, "No I didn't!"

"See~" Su Su chuckled.

"Su Su, why are you here?"

She took out her own book.

"I wanted to ask you about the ending of the book."

Su Su reached the end of the book Dream of the Exiled Fox.

She began reading.

[A content smile as his body was lifeless.]

[I have one regret, If I had just been killed by her in the beginning...No, if we just never met...She wouldn't have been crying.]

Her voice grew solemn, "Why did Jian....the main character have such a thought as he died?"

Feng Jia looked on and sighed. Although they were enemies, only they knew each others pain like their own.

Feng Jia also wanted to hear about Jian Yu and how he was similar to Bai Yu.

Hao Yu sat down on a completely different side from them and thought about it.

"Its as if the main character realized that the pain they both endured was inevitable the moment they crossed paths. Maybe he felt that if their paths never crossed, the suffering wouldn't have started. Maybe...he felt guilty for her pain, even if he wasn't the one who intended it."
