"You gotta be kidding"
"What! That doesn't make sense. How does this make sense to you?" Angela fumed.
"Why are you yelling at me, huh you signed the documents yourself didn't ya? Andrew raised his voice at her.
She stared at him, who would ever believe that this man standing right in front of her could be this mean and callous. He seems soft and kind with his looks but. No, he's nothing but a self-centered man, no wonder he couldn't get himself a wife. He thinks the world revolves around him.
She realizes that fighting him wasn't going to solve her problems.
After a few minutes she didn't know what to do.
"Andrew",
Yeah,
"Andrew please, I have a sick father and I need to know how he's fairing". She Burst into tears.
"That's the reason I took the contract, my father is dying and I need to get the money as soon as possible to pay for his surgery due in a few days. Please I don't want my dad to die on me" she sulked.
"I promise once the surgery is over I will give you the phone myself please", she begged.
"Your father is what?" He asked concerned
He's dying and needs surgery, I have no one else to run to for the bills so I figured out I take the Surrogate contract so I can raise the bills for the surgery and for my family". She replied, still crying.
Woah!
He scoffed, "I didn't know that", he said calmly.
"How old are you?",
"21"
Andrew is shocked. He still couldn't believe a young girl of this age would be so willing to take the risk of surrogacy just to take care of her family. Andrew is soft on the inside all though he never displays that part of him out for people to see.
He bent down and searched a few drawers. After about two or three he brought out the phone and handed it over to Angela.
"
"You may leave now," she said, waving his palm at her.
Her face was pale and numb, she left the study room and headed for her room.
In her room she dialed a contact and waited a few seconds for a response.
Hello, she said.
Hi babes, been trying to reach you all day, what happened? The voice said from the other end of the phone. It was Rachael
Angela sighed. "He took me to his house".
What? How did that happen? You shouldn't be living in his house, what if a killer or a kidnapper or a drug Lord or something. Rachael panicked.
I will be fine. Trying as much as possible to hold back her tears.
"I'm so sorry babes, I talked into this whole mess"
It's fine, you did me a great favor, but I just hope this whole surgery thing pulls through successfully, then I would be the happiest, if not I would hate myself for the rest of my life".
"Do not talk like that Angie, you're gonna be fine okay?".
I will help you out with your assignment if that is okay with you.
"Sure, it's fine. Thanks a lot".
They chatted for a few more minutes before hanging up.
Life in this place was going to be boring to her, of course she isn't the party type but this house with only a housekeeper in it was a terrific idea. Ha! She forgot "the cold boss". That man is definitely a thorn in her flesh, he's just so difficult. She had never thought about his reasons for getting a child through Surrogacy, not like he had a wife or something. "Well, that isn't my business" she thought to herself as she walked into the bathroom on the left end of the room.
He is a billionaire anyways he could handle himself at the snap of his fingers.
She examined her face in the oval shaped mirror in the bathroom wall for a while, then she combed her fingers through her hair. Her hair was truly a mess. These past days have been too stressful for her and she is beginning to lose mental stability. She wasn't going to let that happen. She turned on the tap and washed her face in the sink bowl.
All will be fine, you can do it, you can do it Angie…
She assured herself.
It wasn't going to be fun, she knows but it was worth taking the risk.
She stepped out of the bathroom, closing the door behind her.
Oh my god….she screamed and ran back right into the bathroom.
What the hell are you doing here? She said hold her hands in her chest.
"It's my house, young lady, I can enter any room I like the way I want and whenever I want to".
Right! She murmured.
"You startled the living being out of me" she said, letting out light pants.
"I didn't mean to, okay. I thought you were asleep so I came to check up on you before going to my room".
"Have you eaten something?",
"Yeah, Madea …mm she gave me food".
"Okay".
"What time is your appointment tomorrow at the hospital?",
9:am she responded,
Okay, I will have the driver drop you off and here's some money in case you need to buy any for yourself.
"Th…ank you", she stuttered.
He left without saying any more words.
She sat on her bed and picked out the dollar bills one after the other. It was 4,000 dollars.
Why is he suddenly nice, he was mean to her last earlier, what changed? And why is he in and out of character? This minute he seems nice and the next he's turned into a fire dragon. She thought to herself.
Smiling.
It was past 8:pm.
Oh my goodness! She exclaimed.
"How can I forget", she picked up her phone and dialed.
Hi mom,
(Angela, how are you?)
"Fine mom", she replied.
"How's dad?",
(He's just lying there in pain, he has been given a few medications, so he's asleep now. Are you coming over for the weekend? Her mother asked from the other end of the phone).
Ummh, the weekend, no mom, I've got a few things to do at school so I won't make it this weekend" she lied.
Oh…okay
She didn't want to tell her mother about her plans of being a surrogate for some billionaire. Her mother has one of the most unimaginable belief systems when it comes to things like this. Sometimes Angela thinks she's just being over righteous and overtly too religious. She would probably say that carrying a child for a man who is not your husband is a sin against the Lord and your body. She wasn't ready for that preaching and sermon.
"Good night mom", she said over the phone.
(Alright, my darling, be good okay?)
ends the call.
Angela laid on her bed for some time. This wasn't how she wanted her life to be, but what can she do? She picked up her phone and read some articles about pregnancy. She became a bit nervous. This is what she signed up for. School can wait. When she's done with all of this she will continue or maybe she could apply for a deferment for this year, since she has only just started the first semester. She thought in her heart.
She let the thought of suspending studies for the year run through her mind for a few minutes and then decided within her to talk to Rachael about it. That way she would hear what Rachael thinks about it and then she could go for another alternative if there's any.
She pulled up the duvet and slept off.
***********
Angela couldn't understand what was going on, her mother had called her to come to the house a few minutes ago.
You need to come home now, she had ordered from the phone.
Angela quickly got dressed and boarded a taxi home.
"What were all these people doing in her house?" A few family members and friends and some other people she couldn't remember.
Why was her mother dressed in black and her brother and the others had pale faces? She thought as she walked past the visitors.
Mom, why are you crying? Where's Dad? She asked.
Her mother didn't respond, only tears rolling down her eyes.
Angela began to fret, she rushed to the other part of the house that had a white curtain cover from the top to the bottom. There it is,
No…. She screamed,
She walked over to examine his face properly.
Her father was dead. He was placed in a casket in a black suit.
She yanked his collar and shook him vigorously as she cried.
(Wake up, wake up, I have the money for the surgery now, wake up please. She screamed).
