Chapter 8 - Fighting for her

Chapter 8

Three days later

It's a beautiful Saturday morning, but to Wendy, it's the worst day of her life, just like the recent days she has spent in the mansion.

Staring up at the ceiling lazily, she sighs briefly as she closes her eyes. It's another day to start her chores again. Mrs. Thompson has only become worsen over the recent days. Alexa got a call from her office the previous day, so she had to leave early.

"Will my day ever get any better?" She mumbles to herself lazily, sitting up on the bed. Dragging herself out of the bed, she hurries out of the room to take care of the house cleaning before Mrs. Thompson would scold her again.

Bending over the center table in the living room and cleaning it, the door suddenly opens and Alex walks inside with a smile on his face, but he stops on his track and his smile fades away as he beholds his wife cleaning the house.

"Wendy..." His mouth drops open in shock as he finally announces his presence. How could his mom have done this, even after he pleaded with her to please treat her nice?

She stops abruptly and turns swiftly in the direction of the voice, her mouth drops open in shock.

"Alex..." She whispers as her heart dances inside her excitedly. It feels like her savior has finally shown up to help her. She hurries over to him and hugs him tightly, but he doesn't look so happy.

"Are you OK?" She asks after she pulls away from him.

"Why are you the one cleaning the house? What happened to Kira?" He asks, trying to control the anger that's trying to consume him.

"I just want to help Kira out with the cleaning..."

"And you expect me to believe that? My mom made you do this, didn't she? Isn't she the one?" The way he yells angrily, she has to step away from him as she flinches in fear. She has never seen him so angry ever since they have been together.

"Kira! Kira! Kira!" He screams at the top of his voice as he walks away angrily, and climbs the staircase as fast as he can.

She hurries after him.

Walking down the hallway briskly, while screaming Kira's name, he stops on his track when his mom steps out of her room. She smiles excitedly as soon as she spots him.

"You're back, son?"

"Did Kira quit her job?" He asks, ignoring her, and she pulls a puzzled look.

"What are you talking about? Kira didn't quit her job. Why would she do that? Did she tell you she was going to quit?" Mrs. Thompson asks confusingly, and he scoffs.

"If Kira didn't quit her job, why was Wendy the one cleaning the house? Isn't that why you have a maid? Kira is paid for this job, why was my wife doing it instead?" He asks calmly, trying to be as much respectful as he can. Maybe this wouldn't have been the case if not that she's his mom, and he respects her so much.

"Come on. Don't tell me that's why you didn't even bother to greet me when you came back. You shouldn't let that bother you. It's just cleaning, so..."

"Are you kidding me? It's just cleaning? Is my wife meant to clean the house when you have a maid you pay to do that for you? It's acceptable if you don't have a maid, but you have a maid. Have you been doing worse to her while I was away?" He scoffs angrily, as he clenches his fists beside him.

"Is it because of that thing you're talking to me in that manner? Is it because of that street urchin yours disrespecting me? That gold digger?" Mrs. Thompson scoffs angrily.

"Just stop it, mom. She's not a gold digger! Wendy loves me, and I love her too..."

"For how long are you going to let her deceive you? All I ever wanted was for you to live a good life and get married to a good woman, but you chose to end up with her instead. What is so good about her?" Mrs. Thompson barks at him.

"Everything, mom. Everything is good about her. You may not see it, but I see everything in her. If you're not going to accept my wife and treat her nicely, then where is the love you claim to have for me? I kept my wife under your care and I was gone for just four days, look at what you've turned her into. Your maid. That is the height of it all," He snaps angrily, and she creases her eyebrow.

"Alex..." Wendy calls as she walks up to him, and holds his shoulder.

"Why are you burning up, huh? I wasn't complaining when you came in, was I? This is nothing, OK? It's just cleaning the house, and besides, I have not been doing it. She's your mom, stop being so mean to her," She says to him calmly, whispering the last part to him.

"Go get your things. We're leaving here this minute," He says to her after he glares at his mom. He finally walks away angrily.

Wendy turns around and walks back into her room.

"Babe, we don't have to do this, OK? You're hurting your mom..."

"Come on, honey... We need to go," He replies to her, throwing her clothes on the bed as he grabs them from the closet.

"He's your mom, Alex..."

"And you're my wife. I won't have anyone treat my wife badly, not even my mom. It is my responsibility to protect you, and it is also my responsibility to protect her if you're treating her badly..." He stops to reply to her and she sighs as she slumps on the bed.

"It was just cleaning, Alex. It isn't a big deal. Why are you making a mountain out of nothing? She's my mother In-law, and I should help her out with the cleaning in the house..."

"Don't even try to convince me that what she did was right, babe. That is why there's a maid here. That's why Kira is getting paid. Why would she ask you to do the cleaning when she has a maid to handle it? I know what I'm saying, babe. Mom never allowed Alexa to do any of the chores in the house even as a woman that need to learn. She always said that it was why she hired a maid to do that. Why does she have to do this to my wife even after I pleaded with her before I left?" He snaps angrily as he arranges the clothes in the bags and zips it up before bringing it down from the bed.

As much as she wants to leave this house and finally have peace of mind, she also doesn't want him to have problems with his mom, not even because of her. That is the last thing she wants to happen.

"I'm not saying we shouldn't leave, OK? You just came back minutes ago, and you should rest, OK? We can leave tomorrow if you still insist, but not today," She stands up and holds his hands while giving him a pleading look.

"Alright," He sighs briefly, pulling her into his arms...
