Chapter 1 - Odric The Slayer Of Gods

A human who slayed a god named Odin

Odric original character backstory

"The son of the chief's daughter, Odric was born to humble beginnings. He grew up in a small village far from any major city and had many friends with whom he played as a boy. When he reached adulthood, however, his father died of old age, leaving Odric to take over the family farm on which they lived. The land was not fertile and there were few crops that could be grown successfully in this region. A scarcity of food meant that everyone had to work hard for their meals. As Odric grew older, he became more and more frustrated by the poverty surrounding him. His dreams of wealth seemed impossible; it would have been easier if he had wished for fame or power instead. But these things were beyond his reach and so he simply gave up hope altogether. While many of the other young men in the village went out seeking adventure in distant lands, Odric stayed at home and worked the fields alone. And though he did what he could to increase the yield from his land, nothing changed for him. For years he remained trapped within the walls of his own mind. Then one day, when he was old enough to understand the world around him, a strange man came to his door. The stranger spoke to Odric in a language he didn't know. It was only then that Odric realised how little he knew about the world outside his village. The stranger told Odric that he had heard rumours of a great treasure buried somewhere in the nearby hills. Odric was excited by this news: he never had much to call his own and here was an opportunity to change all that! So he followed the stranger into the hills and soon discovered the ruins of a long-dead fortress. Odric found himself in a chamber filled with ancient relics. Among them was a glowing gemstone, almost too bright to look upon. Odric picked up the stone and began to examine it. Suddenly he saw something different - a vision of a fire burning inside the gem. Odric quickly placed the stone back down on the table and left the chamber. He returned home a changed man. When his father asked him why he'd come home early, he told him about finding the treasure. His father was amazed and encouraged Odric to keep searching for more treasures.

While Odric continued to search for riches throughout the rest of the year, winter came without warning. The land froze over and nothing could grow. This was a terrible blow to the Odrics' finances but Odric did not despair. After all, he still had the priceless gemstone. But soon after this, the weather took a turn for the worse and a blizzard swept through the village. The winds were so fierce that even the strongest warriors could not survive in such conditions. Many villagers died that night. Only Odric, who had sheltered himself away in his hut, survived. When morning finally came, Odric went out into the snow and searched for his lost companions. Eventually, he found their bodies. Even though they had died defending the village against the storm, there was no glory in such a death and Odric felt guilty. He knelt beside each body, shed tears, and prayed for forgiveness. Then he carried the bodies back to the village and laid them in their final resting places. In time, the survivors rebuilt their homes. The villagers never forgot the sacrifice of those who had fallen, but they also chose not to dwell on it. There were more important matters to worry about than the passing of a few brave men.

After the winter passed, Odric resumed his search for treasure and eventually unearthed another ancient relic. Yet again, Odric could see a fiery light deep within the gemstone: the same vision that had come to him the previous spring. He was shocked by this new revelation and he immediately returned to his village and told everyone what he'd seen. They were terrified and begged Odric to put the gemstone aside.

Odin coming and meeting Odric

Fear gripped the villagers. No one knew what to do. Should Odric give up his quest? Or should he continue to risk his life in the hopes of finding some great treasure? Finally, a wise elder stepped forward and suggested that Odric consult the gods. The people gathered around the temple and waited for an answer. Soon the doors opened and a tall figure walked inside. Everyone fell silent, knowing that this was none other than the son of Odin himself. Odric bowed low before the god and asked him to tell him the truth about the gemstone.

Odin tells Odric the true nature of the gemstone

"I can only speak the truth," said Odin. "Whatever you choose to believe is your own business." Odric thanked him and returned home.
