The chance of reuniting himself with Janet via telephone call was lost. He wondered what next. He thought he had forgotten Janet totally before this time, he thought he had moved on with his own life, he thought his marriage with Elizabeth would be his highest priority but his heart had gone back to Janet ever since he received the last call with his lost phone.
He remembered that particular day. He was on a bike with Edward when he received the call. At first he was angry because he hated phone calls whenever he is on a bike. Later he managed to pick the anonymous call and shouted "Hello!" angrily at the caller.
"Hello. This is your Janet, your girlfriend back then in school." The caller tried introducing herself.
"Ja.... Janet." He was shocked, he wanted to ask about her whereabout when all of a sudden, some snatched James phone it was a guy on a bike that passed beside them. And with so much frustration he summoned Edward to run after the bike as fast as he could.
It was as if his happiness was stopped all of a sudden. He wished he could ride a bike, he would have collected the bike from Edward and rode it himself. Edward was not fast enough, the other bike had gone too far. For the first time he realised that there are thieves that makes use of bike in Canada too. Why is is first very chance of reuniting himself with Janet taken away from him all of a sudden. He wondered if they were really destined to be together. They were not able to keep up the same pace with the other bike that day and the funniest part was that, Edward's bike ran out of fuel all of a sudden. Everything just occured in a rush to James, he had never felt so much sorrownin his life.
He knew the next thing to do was to either report the case to the Police or track the lost phone with Elizabeth's phone through his gmail account.
"Phones stolen by these bikes will be formatted immediately so that there will be no chance of tracking it. The bikeman use no plate number so that their bike won't be tracked as well." Elizabeth told him when he explained his ordeal to her. He made no mistake of telling her about the caller, he on y told her that he was recieving an anonymous call when his phone was snatched all of a sudden.
"The caller hasn't even mentioned her name." He had lied.
"There may be no chance of getting your phone again."
The truth was; the lost phone was not of any pain to him, but the fact that he lost contact with Janet pained him a lot. He knew he had to give up looking for the phone, but he had retrieve his phone number.
"Can I get anywhere to retrieve my SIM here, Elizabeth?" He asked
"Do you mean the one you bought here?"
"No, The one I've been using before coming to Canada."
"Your MTN SIM?"
"Yeah, I want to retrieve that line because of mom and other Nigerian friends that call me through that number."
"MTN is not being used here, James." Elizabeth said and then went to sit on James's lap. They were both sitting on Elizabeth's bed in her room earlier. James was depressed and was not in the mood for any romance with Elizabeth but he hid his depression as didn't want any emotional question from Elizabeth.
He was shocked to realise the fact that MTN SIM is not being sold in Canada. He hid his shock as well and just reacted normally to Elizabeth's reply. Deep down, he was hurt.
"If I'm able to retrieve my line." James said to himself, "Janet may try my number again and from there, I will be able to speak to her." The funniest part was that; he knew no phone number offhand from the lost phone, even his mom's number. He knew he definitely had to continue looking for his phone.
"The thieves are not stupid na." John told him after listening to his ordeal. As well, he made no mistake of telling John about Janet. "They would have removed your SIM cards and throw it away on that same day. If at all you are able to get your phone again, you will never see your SIM card again."
This shocked James the more. It dawned on him that he would not be able to speak to all his friends and family in Nigeria again, even his mother whom he always call everyday. If at all he got a new phone, he knew no phone number offhand. He was always dependent on his phone to dial any number but now he realised the great importance of having a number or two memorized. He was totally fed up with everything and felt like dying.
He got himself another phone two weeks after the last one was stolen but could not get off the thought of the last phone. He knew how worried his mother must have been. He knew Janet must have think he intentionally cut the call. He knew his friends in Nigeria must have been worried as well. But what could he have done when Canadians had made him realise the fact that Canada is not his father's land.
"I've lost Janet already." He said to himself. "Maybe we are not destined to be together."
He wished he could just go back to Nigeria straightaway, but he had two years left. Two years before he could be able to leave Canada, how worsened would it be.
"Can't I just go to Nigeria on a short vacation?" He had asked the manager who brought him to Canada when he paid a visit to his office.
"You will lose your job by the time you come back, James." The manager replied him. "Why don't you think twice. More and more individuals are waiting to occupy that post held by you. You will lose it once you decide to go on a vacation. Why don't you wait for the remaining two years and go on an eternal vacation?"
"Going on an eternal vacation after two years will be better than losing my source of income just by going on a two weeks vacation." He admitted.
"But, if at all I lose this job, won't I get another one if I look for it?" He asked himself. "He decide to go back to Nigeria later on. And in the next two weeks, he found himself in a plane going to Nigeria.
