Chapter 9 - Smoke

"She used a vial of blood to increase her speed? And here I thought it only healed us." Jason itches his chin as he and Damian sit alone in a room.

"If I had something like that I might be able to use my powers." Damian clenches his fist.

"Might as well give it a try, if it doesn't work I'll just knock your head again." Jason leans back and stares at the ceiling.

"Thanks boss, I'll go collect some right away." Damian eagerly rushes towards the door.

"Hold on, you didn't explain how you got that nasty scar on your gut." Jason halts him.

"I'm not sure when this happened, the last thing I can recall is me refusing to use my power and then I was out." Damian lifts up his shirt, revealing a huge scar where the woman had impaled him.

"Okay. Don't go anywhere, we'll all head out today. I don't need you dying off in some forest." Jason shoos him out the door.

"This thing is completely dry." Henry is crouched over the mummified corpse of a deer.

"Do you think a chupacabra did it?" Alex begins shivering with fear.

"I doubt it, there isn't a single puncture wound." Henry goes to pick up the stiff corpse but the flesh tears right off.

"El Diablo!" Alex looks away from the grotesque scene.

"Can't rule that one out, it's possible." Henry stands up and wipes his hand clean.

"If it does turn out to be a chupacabra, you're the best matchup against it, Alex." Natalie sets a hand on his shoulder.

"I guess you're right. My stoney body makes me practically immune to any natural piercing and cutting weapons." Alex stares at his rocky arm.

"Let's not think about fighting that thing, our goal is to collect blood vials for regeneration and power ups." Henry takes the lead in search of prey.

The gang enters a collapsed city, the air is still and silent. As they turn a corner they find the road littered with mummified bodies.

"A-a black cloud!" The group turns to Damian who's looking up.

There above them is a dense swirling mass of darkness.

Footsteps echo in the hollow city, as a figure steps into sight, wearing a bullet proof vest over a hoodie and some strange mask similar to a plague doctor but with a much smaller and thinner nose.

The figure reaches forward and the massive black cloud begins to shift and reach towards the group.

The cloud stops as Natalie freezes half of it. Her frozen eye quivers, causing her to get a nosebleed and fall backwards, Damian catches her.

"The black cloud is a massive swarm of mosquitos!" Henry looks terrified as he takes a step back.

"Ugh, I hate bugs." Jason steps forward ready to fight.

Henry glances at Grant, he nods. Grant rushes forward, kicking Jason's feet out from under him. As they prepare to run off Alex stares down this foe.

"Alex, we have to get out of here!" Henry watches as the remaining cloud recovers from Natalie's attack.

"It's fine, I'll squash this bug." Alex's skin hardens, becoming a shell of rock.

"We'll be at the base." Damian pulls Henry by the arm.

As soon as Alex turns back to his foe the massive cloud strikes down on him.

"Ni un rasguño." The swarm lifts off Alex as he's completely unaffected.

The masked figure lifts their hand, then clenching into a fist. A chunk of the swarm mashes together splattering blood everywhere. From the ball of carcasses a massive monster resembling a mosquito rises. The monster leaps at him, its claws barely able to carve lines into his armor.

Alex latches onto the monster's main arms, rolling to get on top and tears them off. It cries in pain until he crushes its head.

"Uh-oh." Alex looks up to see two monsters took the place of the previous.

They fly at him with incredible speed, snatching his arms and smashing him through numerous trees. They then try to rip him apart by flying in opposite directions, but he snaps out of their grip and charges towards the masked figure. The monsters grab ahold of him before he could make contact. His stoney body suddenly form spikes that pierce the bodies of the monsters, the spikes retract just as quickly as they appeared. Alex winds up a devastating punch aimed at the masked figure's head, before being sent flying back.

Blood trails into Alex's eyes as a stinging pain resonates from his forehead. With his bulky stone fingers he feels a small metallic object on the center of his head.

"A bullet?" He looks at a dented bullet, the tip covered in his blood.

The masked figure stands over him, holding a smoking pistol. With an echoing bang everything goes black.
