Chapter 8 - Surprising Enemy

Fannum waited until night fall to start his escape. He wanted to make sure that he had the most coverage before he attempted the escape. After all if he got caught, though he could fight one or three guys off, that was his limit. So it was best to stay in hiding.

After revising his plan and trying to foresee any mishaps that might occur, night had finally fallen. Fannum rose as he glanced at his surroundings, his gaze fell on a shorter barley 8ft tall shack. Clenching the muscles in his calves and lowering his center of gravity, Fannum leapt with all his strength. Landing on the top of the shack, Fannum's gaze wondered as he chose a direction.

'Over there. That looks like the least protected and closest exit from the slums.' The direction that Fannum was looking at was 300m away and had only three guards patrolling the area. Fannum assumed that the lack of patrol was due to the Interlocks thinking he wouldn't be in the dump of the slums. 'Better for me.' Fannum thought inwardly as he leapt from shack to shack, quickly encroaching on his destination.

After getting within a 100 meter radius of the official exit of the slums, Fannum jumped down from the shacks in order to make less noise and use the cover of the night more effectively. He used debris of broken down huts, shacks, or other structures to hide himself. The guards were all spread out by 25 meters, this ensured they covered more ground while searching, but also ensured that they could see an attack incoming and reach each other in time to intercept it.

After taking a deep breath, Fannum got into position as he prepared for a mad dash. 'It's all or nothing!' Fannum hyped himself up inwardly. He was nervous, if he got caught, he was screwed.

"Whoosh"

The sound of wind blowing vigorously was heard by the patrol of three men, as they turned to see Fannum making a dash for the dirt path up ahead. The leader of the patrol wanted to yell at his men to chase him. Because if Fannum was to escape the slums and run down the path, he could eventually make it to the woods that emerged as the path continued towards the prosperous part of the city. Making it impossible to track him. But the captain couldn't roar for his men to chase nor for Fannum to stop, as all he saw was figure leaving a trail of dust behind him.

"What the fuck? Why the hell is that kid so fast?!" The men were baffled at the scene of Fannum leaving them in the dust as they didn't even attempt to chase after him. As the captain gazed at Fannum's fleeting figure, he looked to his waist strap with a complicated gaze. "I hope he doesn't kill me for not being able to capture a kid, but this is the best I can due for him." After muttering those words the captain reached for a pouch connected to his waist strap. Taking out a small jagged stone with foggy gas residing in the middle, the man cracked the stone and quickly tossed it into the air. As the stone reached a desirable height it radiated a white gleam, the gleam was bright but not over powering.

"Tch, that kid really does have something special about him." A tall, lean man, in a nice building when comparing to the slums, muttered. "As expected, if you want something done you have to do it yourself." The man said with annoyance as he dashed through the window of the three story building he was in. The man was like a blur, as the ripples from his speed tore down the shabby shacks of the slums and ripped apart the ground. He was running towards the white light that flared in the sky moments ago, he gave it to his men as a last resort, if the boy was in risk of escaping, they were to fire the stone off into the sky. The flare was a signal that the man had to take matters into his own hands.

This man was Nico's right hand man, Gale. A person of indispensable use compared to all of the other members of interlock. He unlike the other members had reached the intermediate stage of the magic awakening realm. All major realms of cultivation are broken into three lesser realms, these lesser realms are the initial, intermediate, and peak stage. After reaching the peak stage, one has to cultivate and grasp an understanding of the next major realm in order to break through. Similarly to Gale's name, he wields the wind attribute. Which allows him to be much faster then a normal person and magician of his same realm when not using spells.

"Wha- What the fuck!" Fannum couldn't help but yell in fright as he turned his head to see a blur fast approaching him. The blur only started coming into his line of sight a minute after the radiant stone went off in the sky, if Fannum new that the patrol was armed with those stones he would've opted for a assassination, but now it was to late for regret. The blur was so fast that he couldn't even see the details of the person who was chasing him, this was especially surprising for Fannum as his eyes had undergone a qualitative change due to him using the power of gluttony. 'Who the fuck is this bastard! I thought the only cultivator in the slums was Nico!' Whoever this man was, he was quickly catching up to Fannum, and when he caught up, Fannum would only have one choice. Fight.
