Chapter 107 - Chapter 107: Nukes (8)

Inside the so-called safe haven, a zombie attack was underway. The military base had been too arrogant and careless in their defense. They had made themselves an easy prey for the zombies.

They were soldiers, trained and ready for this scenario. But their pride had blinded them to the real threat. They could handle the normal zombies, but these were not normal. These were mutants.

The mutants were fast, agile, and cunning. They had turned the bright and wealthy society into a nightmare. Screams, blood, and pain filled the air. Everything that the outside world had suffered, they were now experiencing.

How did this happen? While Anna was distracting the guard leader, Souta and his team, who were not with her, had dropped a dozen of mutant zombies that Souta had captured when he was venting his stress on the horde.

They had released them on the other side of the island, on the hill. Some soldiers had come to investigate, but Souta and his team had killed them quietly. Then they had let the mutants loose, and they had quickly overrun the island.

Souta and the others fly over the island as they watch them turn into a dead island! No one questioned Souta's tactics, what he ordered is the "right thing" to them. He is the rules, he himself is what they believe and not some common sense.

And so, a few minutes later. Souta and his team killed all the zombies in the island without any casualties.

Anna shouted with joy, "Pew! A whole new base for us!"

Steff looked at her and said, "You really changed a lot, Anna."

"Did I?" Anna asked.

"Yeah, you used to hate this kind of tactics. But now you are happy that we have a new base, even though we killed civilians along the way."

"Oh, whatever. It's survival of the fittest, the strong rule the weak. And besides, these people were trash anyway, so there's nothing to feel sorry for."

"Enough chit-chat, get back to work!" Rex ordered.

"Okay~" Anna said and they resumed their work.

Their work was to loot every corner of the island, every house, building, store, and take everything they could find. The island was a large paradise for the rich people, a vacation spot for the elite.

"Now this is what I want," I said, looking at the military base on the shore. They had five medium navy warships, two jets, armored vehicles, tanks, weapons, and more. They also had a lot of helicopters, some of them looked civilian. How rich were these people? Well, it was a big haul for us!

"Is it worth it? To kill some innocent civilians?" Ai asked as she stood behind me.

"Innocent civilians? What are you talking about, Ai? Do you think those people were innocent? No way, they were nothing but greedy bastards who only cared about themselves."

"I'm not talking about them, but the others who got caught in the crossfire. There must have been some innocent civilians there, right?"

"Ai, if I try to be a hero here, my comrades will die for sure. Why should I care about these people who I don't even know? Should I sacrifice my men for them? Why? Because they are just some poor innocent people who got unlucky? That's bullshit, Ai. The world has changed a long time ago, wake up." I said and walked away.

"If the world changed, should you also change? That's adaptability, adapting to the world is better. But isn't it better to be someone who you truly want to be? Humans are so confusing," Ai murmured to herself.

After hours of fighting and looting, we had successfully taken over the whole island base. We burned all the corpses and prepared to move everything there. "This could be a good base, but moving everything here now is stupid. We should just make this an outpost. Anna, I want you to take over this base. We need power in the navy. This could be a good thing for us. I'll send some reinforcements, so make this base useful, okay?"

"Eh? Why me? Do you have some better person to govern this land than me?" She said in shock.

"Well, that's because I still have plans with those strong people. This land isn't exactly attacked by many, so it's easy for you. I want this base to produce resources such as swords and even bullets."

"Bullets!? You plan to make bullets!?" She exclaimed.

"Of course, it's shocking noh? But I do. I already asked Ai about this and she said she can help me and teach you how. I will be sending people here to stockpile the warehouse. However, after 10 days you all will evacuate and go back to the base."

"The nukes huh... I guess I have no other choice but to do what you said. I'll do it then." She said with determination.

I smiled and said, "Good, we'll be going then."

And so, we had acquired the new base. We went back to our base with our loot, and shared the news with the others. I also instructed Mathew and Christopher to lead their team to the island and set up the warehouse and the equipment for making bullets. Ai also accompanied them to guide them through the process.

The group that came back from their own expedition, didn't waste any time and started their new missions. Days turned to Weeks, and the people grew more nervous about the fate of the world. Would the nuke really come? Or would it not? There were many unanswered questions, but one thing was certain: Souta and his team were ready for anything.
