Chapter 80 - Chapter 80: The Metropolis (7)

We spent the next few hours training and building different formations for our upcoming expedition. The morning came, and as the sun rose up, we stood in front of our vehicles that Souta had provided in the garage of the military base.

"Alright, these are off-road motorcycles. Scouts reported that most of the road is filled with broken cars, so we're providing you guys with these bikes for fast and easy maneuvering. And of course, a heavy armored truck with all the supplies you'll need: medicines, water, gasoline, food, and other essentials. We're expecting the expedition to last at least a couple of months or so. We also gave you guns and ammo of your choice. So, how do you like it?" He said as we checked the items.

"This should be good enough," Roger said, inspecting the rifle. Souta then looked at me. "Yup, this should be enough," I agreed.

He smiled. "Good. We wish you good luck." I smiled back, grateful for his assistance. With these equipment and well-trained mercenaries, I was sure we could succeed in this mission.

With that, we left. I chose to ride the truck that had been fortified with scraps to make it more durable. I had four men with me in this truck: two in the driver's seat, and one inside the truck with me. They were all quiet and didn't speak much, but I didn't care. As long as we could do our job well.

The other four used the motorcycles to scout ahead. We encountered no problems. Our travel was going smoothly so far. I looked around, bored. This place was surrounded by mostly trees, forests, and mountains.

This was really the countryside, but now we were heading to the metropolis. Before the apocalypse started, it would take 96 hours of non-stop driving to get there. That place was a beautiful city that had tall buildings, many businesses, and low crime rates.

But when the apocalypse started, the city collapsed in a matter of hours. With their large population, the zombies spread like wildfire across the city in just a day. The military gave up and started bombing it instead.

We could only hope that the helicopter was still there. We had to take many detours as we drove, since most of the main road was blocked by wrecked cars.

As night fell, we decided to camp and rest, since it was too risky to travel in the dark. We found a house a little off the road and cleared it of any zombies.

"You can take the room, we're fine here. You should rest for tomorrow," Roger said. He was the one assigned to be the leader of this expedition, and he was also Souta's right-hand man. I wondered if he was competent enough for that role.

"I'll take your offer," I said. There was no point in arguing with them or trying to join the night watch. They wouldn't let me anyway.

But I still had to be careful. I didn't trust them. I went into the room, which looked clean. It seemed like the family that owned this house had left when the apocalypse started. That was a smart move.

I opened my bag and took out a can of food. I sat on the bed and opened the can. It was beans. I scooped and ate them on the bed. "I hope this expedition ends well," I murmured.
