Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: The Horde (5)

We reached the base in a hurry. The others were already on alert, guarding the place. We took all of our people to the main base, where we had the most protection. We didn't bother with the first line of defense, since it would be useless against the horde. We needed to concentrate our firepower.

The soldiers were armed and ready, waiting for my orders. I got out of the vehicle and handed the survivor to a medic. "Take care of her. Tell the others to meet on the walls. Now!" I shouted, and the soldiers obeyed.

I climbed the walls, which were made of concrete and steel. I stood on the top and looked at the surroundings with my binoculars. I saw nothing but dust and forest. "Let's just hope that they aren't many. What a fcking day," I muttered.

"Souta, we're here," Amy said, climbing the stairs of the wall. "Good. All of you, prepare your soldiers. Guard the walls. And fortify the fcking gate," I said, and they nodded and move.

Jana and her group arrived in their vehicles . They had some useful skills and resources, so I welcomed them. "Open the gates!" I shouted, and the soldiers opened the heavy metal gates, letting them in. Jana came to me, looking worried. "What can we do?" She asked.

"Those evolved zombies can only die by explosions. Help us and join us on the walls. We have some grenades and explosives, but not enough. We need to use them wisely," I said, and she nodded, thanking me for letting them stay.

"No problem. We're in this together," I said, trying to sound confident.

The walls had different positions for the soldiers. Some were on the top, with sniper rifles and machine guns. Some were inside the walls, with a five-inch gap to place their guns and peek. The walls were designed to provide cover and support for the shooters.

"Has Roger and Rex returned?" I asked my soldiers.

"Not yet, sir," they replied, looking nervous. "Dammit, contact them and tell them to-" A loud explosion cut me off. It was one of our traps, triggered by the zombies. "Shit! They're here!" I yelled, feeling the tension in the air. The distant moans and shuffles of the approaching zombie horde grew louder, echoing through the desolate landscape. I grabbed my rifle and aimed at the horizon, where I saw a wave of rotting flesh and blood. I took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. "Fire!"

As the horde of zombies drew closer, we opened fire with our guns, hoping to slow them down. The sound of gunfire was deafening, bouncing off the concrete walls that surrounded our base. It was a desperate and defiant attempt to defend our home.

But the zombies were relentless. They kept coming, ignoring the bullets that tore through their flesh moved with the flickering flames from our traps and explosives.

Jana and her group, who had joined us from another base, were shooting from the walls, along with my soldiers. They were talking while they were fighting, trying to distract themselves from the horror. "Hey, don't you think that kid is too smart for his age?" Garp said, referring to Souta, the leader of our base. He was Jana's military commander, and a veteran of many battles.

"What do you mean?" Kisse asked, curious. She was the vice commander, and Garp's right-hand woman.

"I mean, look at his strategy. He combined the modern warfare and medieval warfare, using dozens of catapults, trebuchets, ballistas, and hundreds of archers. Don't you think it's smart to use these tactics in times like this?" He said, admiring Souta's plan.

"Yeah, I guess it is. But how the hell did he manage to build all that?" She asked, impressed.

"I have no idea. But I'm glad he did. They are doing some serious damage to the horde. Look at that!" He said, pointing at a huge boulder that smashed into a group of zombies, crushing them. "Boom!"

The horde of zombies was closing in on our base, faster than we had anticipated. They were the evolved ones, "These are… the evolved zombies?" I said, looking at the ones that had mutated and gained speed, strength, and intelligence. They were the ones that had destroyed the military base, and now they were after ours and other base nearby.

We had prepared for this, but we didn't expect them to reach our walls so soon. Luckily, our walls were strong enough to withstand their attacks, and they couldn't climb them. But they were still terrifying to face.

They are smart to focused their efforts on the gate, trying to break it down with brute force. "Use that!" I shouted, pointing at a barrel of gasoline. My soldiers quickly poured it on the gate and lit it on fire.

The flames erupted, creating a wall of fire that stopped the zombies in their tracks. The smell of burning gasoline and rotting flesh filled the air, making me gag. The fire cast a red glow on the scene, making it look like hell on earth.

We used the opportunity to regroup and reinforce our defenses. We checked our ammo and weapons, and prepared for the next wave. The fire illuminated our faces, showing our determination and resolve.

The battle raged on for hours, with no sign of stopping. The zombies came in endless waves, surrounding our base like a sea of death. We fought back with everything we had, but it was not enough. We were running out of ammo and explosives, and the zombies were getting closer.

We had to rely on our medieval machines, which we had built from scrap metal and spare parts. They were catapults, trebuchets, ballistas, and crossbows, modified and improved for our defense. They fired rocks, arrows, bolts, and bombs, hitting the zombies with a wide range of attacks. They made a lot of noise, clanking and whirring, adding to the chaos of the battle.

"Keep those machines firing! We need to thin their numbers!" I ordered, directing the soldiers. The walls shook as the machines launched their projectiles, creating gaps in the horde.

Jana and her group, who had joined us from another base, were shooting from the walls, along with my soldiers. They were skilled and efficient, picking off the zombies with accuracy.

But despite our best efforts, the horde kept coming. The medieval machines, though useful, had their drawbacks. They were slow to reload, prone to malfunction, and take too much man power to use. We were getting tired and weary, and we knew we couldn't keep this up forever.

"We need a plan, and we need it now," Jana said, wiping the sweat from her forehead. She looked at me, expecting me to have an answer. I wished I did, but I didn't. I was out of ideas. I felt hopeless.

I looked around the battlefield, trying to find any edge we could use against the zombies. I knew we couldn't afford to lose this fight, but we were running out of options. I racked my brain for a plan, but nothing came to mind. Then, I heard a shout from behind me.
