"M-Mom" Regina's voice trembled, looking at her mother, who refused to look up.
"Look at me, mom. It is me, your Gina," Regina called again, pleading for a moment of her time.
When her wish was granted, Rachael raised her gaze and fixed Regina with those same vacant eyes.
"What are you doing here?" Rachael's lack of empathy took Regina off guard and she smiled awkwardly.
"Mum, I came to see you," she said, desperately smiling at her.
Regina had never seen her mother like this after that dreadful day when Clement ran off taking her brother and today it was again him who made her feel that way.
Despite her selfishness, Rachael always wished to provide her kids with a better life—something they would not get with Clement.
She acknowledged that her approach was incorrect, but it was all she could do to get out of that poverty.
