Chapter 10 - First Trial - Temple of the fallen Demon Lord (part 6)

More importantly, near the door far from the edge of the water surface, he spotted a single empty glass bottle sealed with a cork.

"So there are some useful items here besides the sword!"

Butaro cheered and approached the bottle.

He put his sword against the wall and picked up the slightly dirty bottle, dusted it off, and opened it.

It didn't smell like anything so it should be safe to store water in.

It was obvious that both the bottle and the water were there for him to scoop and take along with him. Maybe even the water had some healing properties.

"Lucky~!"

Butaro hummed and approached the water reservoir ready to fill the bottle with crystal-clear water.

And then he froze halfway there with his hand outstretched realizing his ridiculous naivete.

Wait… That setup would be normal in games only…! Isn't it like super suspicious for a bottle to just conveniently be there… As if…|

Gears in Butaro's brain suddenly switched into a higher gear as he finally realized that something was seriously wrong with the setup he was in!

It's just as if it was a trap that would lead me directly into the jaws of dange…|

Butaro opened his eyes wide in shock and stared at the rocky bottom of the reservoir.

"!!!"

...and then he noticed that the rocky bottom of the reservoir was staring right back at him...!

"FUCK!"

Butaro shouted and jumped backward as fast as he could.

*SPLASH*

"HIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!"

*THUNK*

His life was saved by the milliseconds.

The water suddenly burst open and a giant crocodile-like creature, with black and gray pointy scales that looked like rocks, jumped out of the water and chomped its giant jaws at where Butaro was less than a heartbeat ago.

*RIIIIIP*

The monster crocodile's dagger-like teeth managed to tear Butaro's uniform shirt shredding it completely and grazing the boy's skin but the mountain of a high schooler managed to escape having a chink of flesh being bitten out of him...

*THUMP*

"GHH...!"

Butaro rolled on the floor and hit the opposing wall.

"HISSSSSSSSS!" *THUNK* *THUNK*

The monster chomped its dagger-like teeth in disappointment and stomped its short stumpy legs on the stone floor to turn itself towards the overweight boy who got up as fast as he got used f his beachball-like appearance and bounced right back on his feet.

*THUNK* *THUNK*

Monster chomped his jaws again and its orange eyes with thin vertical pupils became filled with excitement.

*SPALSH*

It smacked its long muscular tail on the water's surface and the water shoot up like a geyser showing the monster's ridiculous strength.

"Haah...! I knew it – that bitch wanted me to become your food, huh~?"

Butaro became pale as a ghost but for some reason, the corners of his mouth lifted up in an excited smile and the pink glow in his eyes flared up once again as the boy felt his body heating up.

Butaro always thought that reptiles were cool and the image of the beast in front of him was sending chills down his spine.

It was the scariest animal that Butaro ever laid his eyes on.

And it was free, not in a cage or behind the screen – it was right in front of the large boy, hungry and set on satiating that hunger with Buaro's flesh.

Butaro was observing the crocodile monster but the crocodile monster wasn't observing him – not in the same way, at least.

Butaro saw an opponent, the monster saw a massive chunk of meat.

...hold on... opponent...? Am I seriously thinking of fighting that thing...?! Huh?|

The boy flinched and realized covered his mouth with one hand just to notice that he was smiling.

*THUNK* *THUNK*

"...!"

But it wasn't the time for self-discovery and contemplation – the hunger in the monster's eyes flared up as it chomped its mouth a few times making a hollow sound and taking a step towards the tense boy.

MEAL.

Monster's intention for Butaro was clear as day.

From its perspective a grand meal appeared before it, there was no need to study the food, it was far more attractive to just go ahead and bite into it!

*CREAAAAK*

*HISSSSSSSSS!"

"...!"

The monster's claws left deep marks on the stone floor as the monster opened its jaws and rushed at Butaro with speed unthinkable for something this size!

"Ghyhy!"

Butaro had only enough time to loudly suck up some air and then he lunged away propelling himself to a distance that would put many professional athletes to shame.

*WHAM* *RUMBLE*

"HISSSSSSSSSSSS! HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!"

He managed to barely get away once again and the monster crashed into the wall causing the whole chamber to shake and started hissing furiously.

"God damn it…! That fuc..!"

Butaro cursed loudly while still on all fours after fumbling the landing and rushed away, intending to make some distance between himself and the monstrous crocodile.

He ended up near the door through which he saw the moonlight sip in.

Since he was already there, he fought back his instinct that was urging him to challenge the monster and reached the escape route.

He even threw his whole weight against it…

But the door didn't even budge!

"HISSSSSSSSSS!" *CRUSH*

The monster shook his head and smashed his tail against the floor causing the stone floor to crack.

Actually, a long crack went all the way toward the door of the chamber that Butaro woke up in.

*click*

"Huh?!"

To make things even worse that door suddenly shut down and made a sound as if metal slabs locked it!

"OH, SO THAT IS HOW YOU WANT THIS TO GO DOWN, HUH!?"

Butaro felt a burning anger light up deep within his core and stepped forward without trying to pull on the door instead of pushing it...

...which, on a side note, would yield the exact same effect as pushing it – nothing.

There was no escape after all.

It really was a death trap.

"HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS"

The monster opened its jaw and once again rushed at Butaro while furiously hissing, anger flashing in the terrifying orange eyes.

THE SWORD…!

Butaro hesitated, he could either grab the weapon or dodge and try to face the beast empty-handed.

*WHAM*

In the end, he jumped away but the short pause was enough for the monster to almost chomp him in half.
