When his red flame assured him that she was able to do that, lightning started to crackle all around Oliver at the same time and he just had enough time to make 3 times in a row the movements needed to create earth shields when the lightning began to fall on him.
His red flame then immediately enveloped the earth shields he created with her own energy to fortify them and so she could also move them as she wanted, and she used them right away to protect her Master from the first wave of lightning.
Steven let his red flame take care of his defense and he made the complex movements that would allow him to also use lightning.
