"There's those nasty little buggers." Fey said as she noticed the blue slimes climbing the sides of trees. "We will go get some weapons and let you kill one… Should go a lot better this time."
"Let's hope." Dax said.
"If not, you can always use your superpowers like you did against that bull beast." Fey jokingly added.
"I just wish I could remember any of it." Dax replied. "Then I might have some clue as to how I did it."
The two finished their walk to the car silently. As they got to the car Fey opened the trunk once more. Dax chose another sword and fey picked up a couple more daggers.
"Try not to break this one." Fey laughed. "They cost around two hundred thousand each."
"They cost what?!" Dax shouted. "I can't afford that!"
"I didn't say you had to." Fey replied.
"Wait… That many weapons…" Dax said as he looked over all the weapons. "That's into the millions…"
"Try not to think about it." Fey said with a smile as she closed the trunk once more. "Let's go kill you a slime!" She started happily walking into the forest. Dax followed her. It did not take them long after entry to find their target.
A medium sized blue slime, around a foot in diameter, was climbing the side of a tree.
"You see its translucent body, see the small orb inside?" Fey asked. "That is the slime core, it is its life force. If you stab the core the slime will die. They move really slowly, so it should be no problem."
Dax walked over to the slime and prepared his sword for a stab. "It doesn't really do anything?" Dax asked nervously before attacking.
"Nope." Fey said. "Like killing… well slime on a tree… I can't really think of anything to compare it to."
Dax took a deep breath and after he exhaled, he impaled the core of the slime with his sword. As he did the core cracked and the slime that surrounded it was expelled in all directions. The spots of Dax's clothes that got hit by the slime debris were instantly dissolved, leaving him in clothing full of holes.
"Oh, they do explode on death though." Fey said laughing. "May have forgotten to mention that."
Dax just wiped away the slime that was on his skin, closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Might have been something to warn me about." He said, trying his best not to get angry.
"And that would have been fun because?" Fey teased. "Look, you got your core, and you finished your first assignment! Congratulations Daxy!"
He took the core from the end of the blade and held it in his hand. It was cold to the touch, like he was holding chilled metal or a chunk of ice. As it sat in his hand the orb began to glow. Faintly at first but it gradually became brighter and brighter.
"Fey?" Dax asked. "Is this supposed to happen?!"
Fey was watching the core light up and was stunned as she had never seen anything like it before. "No…" She replied.
The light then exited the core in a misty stream that twisted and twirled until it found its way to the orb hanging around Dax's neck. As the last bit of light left the slime core in Dax's hands turned to dust and blew away in the wind.
"Your necklace isn't what I thought it was… was it?" Fey asked very pointedly.
"No, well not exactly no." Dax said as he grabbed the orb hanging from his neck. "It's an old family artifact."
"Have anything to do with your superpowers?" Fey asked, raising her brow on the left side.
"I honestly wish I knew." Dax said. "I didn't even know it… it ate monsters… Dad didn't mention anything like that to me."
"Maybe he never killed anything." Fey said. "It is possible that he didn't know."
"Maybe." Dax said. "Or it's something else."
"Oh?" Fey asked.
"Yeah, I think it all has to do with the Magi King." Dax said. "I think the orb and what you claim are my powers… I think they all are related to the Magi King."
"I am not seeing the connection." Fey said.
"Well, I have these dreams…" Dax said. "Dreams of the Magi King. Only I am not dreaming them as a spectator, I am the Magi King in my dreams, and I feel what he feels. In my last dream I felt him die."
"Well, Daxy, didn't your father say that shadow beast needed the blood of the heir?" Fey asked. "If that thing was after you, you have superpowers, and you are having dreams about the magi king, maybe you are the Magi King's heir?"
"Is that even a thing?" Dax asked.
"Beats me." Fey said, shrugging her shoulders as she replied. "The Magi King was supposed to be super magical though, right? Who knows what kind of crazy thing he might have done to make you the heir or whatever. It isn't like we have any working knowledge of magic today, real magic anyway. We understand science based nanite spells quite well.
Seeing you earlier though, if that wasn't magic… I don't know what is."
"Well, that's something to think about." Dax said. "Right now, though… We have a problem. How do I collect the slime core if my necklace eats it?"
"Maybe take the necklace off?" Fey asked.
"No." Dax said. "I can't explain it, but I cannot."
"That's fine…" Fey said. "How about this? You kill it and I carry it. The teacher never said you had to carry it right?"
"He did not." Dax said. "Alright let's do your plan."
Dax walked over to another nearby slime and stabbed it. This time rolling out of the way as soon as he did so that the explosion of slime material would miss him. Fey walked over and picked the slime core up and then the two left the forest and got back into the car.
