When I got back to class, the first period was over and my day kept getting worse. The next period was English. "Good morning class" the class mumbled a good morning back. Every one of them hate English but I think it's interesting. Who cares what I think always?
"We are having a test" Everyone in the class moaned.
"No complaints please" she handed everyone a test slip. I read through and saw that it was simple and I immediately started writing. No sooner had I started writing then I heard "As usual, the geek knows it all" I turned my head in the direction of the voice and saw Riley sneering at me. I turned back and continued writing.
"Psst. Psst" I turned.
"Any idea question two?" Sean asked me.
"Uhm… the answer is…"
"Miss April, back to work"
"Sorry miss" she continued walking.
"Psst. Hey question two" he kept whispering. Whenever I tried answering, Miss Delvin would fix her big mouse-like eyes on me, like she was watching my every move so I couldn't help him. It was the first time I would attempt something like that. I was always a good girl and everyone knew that. After the period was over, Riley approached me.
"Who knew that a little angel would try to cheat?" I didn't want to answer her and continued reading
"I'm talking to you idiot" she placed her hand on my book.
"Could you please leave me alone?" I said in a timid voice.
"Gotten a little brave have we?" she pulled my hair harshly making the wound on my head throb terribly. I cried out. "Riley just let her be, she's had enough" Kate said.
"And who are you to tell me what to do?" They had a stand-off and suddenly, Riley turned back at me.
"You fool, what are you staring at?"
"Sorry" Riley stormed off in anger. I wanted to thank Kate. "Thanks" and I realized I made a mistake. "You really are stupid aren't you?" she pushed my chair making me fall. "I was only trying to have my turn" I stood and backed up into a corner. "I saw what you were trying to do with my Bruce"
"Bruce? He…he was just helping me"
"Oh really? I saw you throwing subtle glances at him"
"Me? I didn't do anything like that" she stopped me.
"Shut up. First Sean, I didn't have any problem with that, then, you try to steal what's mine, you'll have to pay for that" she slapped me repeatedly on the same cheek but I didn't cry because I was already used to it. "You've become brave, haven't you?" she pulled me by the hair again and dragged me to the window. She was going to close the shutter on my hand and nobody in class was ready to save me.
"What's this?" She held my bandaged hand and pulled the bandage off it. She was about to release the shutter when I heard the person who got me in this mess voice.
"April, you forgot your…" He stopped when he saw what Kate was about to do. "Are you insane?" He pulled me away from her. Kate was shocked and immediately put on an innocent face but Bruce wasn't going to buy it. He saw my red cheek "Who did this?" I didn't want to say anything. "Answer me!" He was angry and I looked at Kate.
"You, I knew you were mean but not this" Kate's eyes teared up. She was crying hysterically, like, really, actually, crying. I'm the one who's supposed to be doing that.
"Kate I'm sorry" I moved closer.
"Don't touch me!" She waked over to Bruce and hugged him and started soaking up his shirt. He took her out of the class and everyone was looking at me like I killed someone. I packed my books and went home. I had enough. As soon as I knocked, Gertrude let me in and was surprised to see me.
"Shouldn't you be in school?"
"Oh Nan" I fell on her and cried my heart out. I fell ill and didn't go to school for two days. I didn't want to return to school but Nan made me. I didn't tell her about the bullies so that she wouldn't worry. To explain my injuries, I told her I fell down from the stairs and she panicked.
"The stairs? My God, why were you so clumsy?"
"Sorry Nan" I looked down.
"Don't be. Let's treat your wound" I really enjoyed her company for these two days. When I returned back to school, I wanted to be alone so I went to the library during lunch. I was in the history section, the last one there, where no one could see me. I was looking for some books on Roosevolt-boring me.
"Hey" I turned and saw Sean and immediately started blushing. I knew I couldn't stay mad at him. "Hi" there was an awkward silence between us.
"Why weren't you in school?"
'He noticed' I could feel butterflies in my belly.
"I was not feeling well" my voice was tiny.
"Are you better now?" His eyes were boring into mine and I was losing concentration.
"Uhm…yes, I'm fine" I was on cloud nine then, Riley came.
"Hey babe" She hugged him from behind then saw me.
"What are you guys talking about?"
"Nothing important" They started making out, right in front of me and I felt terribly jealous. I left there in a hurry with my book and bumped into Bruce.
"Hey easy" He picked the book up.
"Roosevelt's history?" I collected the book from him.
"It's none of your business"
"Shouldn't you be thanking me?"
"For what? If anything, made it worse" He didn't say anything and I started feeling guilty.
"Sorry" I looked down. He walked away.
'Great, another stupid thing I did'
I left there, I didn't want to back to the library because Riley was there, Kate was in the class so I figured out the only free place left was the court. I went there and started reading, then I remembered "Oh my God, my diary!" I had totally forgotten about it. Those two days I was ill, I couldn't write in it and then remembered the last time I saw it was three days ago, the day I wanted to give Sean my love letter. I knew I was in deep trouble because of some of the things I wrote in there about Sean, our marriage and future children. Bruce wanted to give me something the day he came to my class and I prayed and hoped it would not be with him. What would he think of me if he saw the crazy things I wrote about his brother? I knew I was going to lose my sanity if Sean read it. I was losing patience and ran to my locker to search for it. My hand kept shaking and I was desperately moving things around in hope of seeing it and after searching through, I couldn't find it. It was soon time for P.E. I was going to the girl's locker room to change and I remembered I had left my book in the court. I ran back to get it and walked into the glass door at the entrance. I moved back and hit someone; Kate.
"Idiot, you stepped on me"
"Oh, sorry"
"Are you blind?"
"Sorry"
"Or do your glasses need some tweaking"
She took my glasses, threw them on the ground and stepped on it, breaking it. I usually had an extra pair with me but not that day and I was already getting late for P.E so I changed and left.
