"Don't look them in the eye, Arin. I need you to close your eyes and keep them closed until I say you can open them. Okay?" Veron instructed in a calm voice, but Karina was thinking about something different entirely.
"We are going to die." Her eyes were already glistening with tears as she blurted the words. "This is happening because of me, right? I knew it was not a good idea. We are going to—"
Her words were cut off when Veron placed a finger over her lips.
"The only people that will die here tonight are those creatures that dared to attack you. And this has nothing to do with you. I've seen this before and I can handle them. Just trust me and do as I say."
Karina nodded, but kept her eyes open, fixed on him.
"Close your eyes," he reminded her and she shut her eyes, an action that made the tears that had gathered, spill out of her eyes.
