It was a common occurrence in novels that involved the zombie apocalypse setting, it happened more than once in numerous novels too.
Whenever there was a journey by car or on foot, there would be an obstruction pop up in a location that was thought to be clear previously or was somewhere within the planned route.
Whether there was one car or more, once people were determined to pass through that route without turning back, there would usually be some trouble ahead.
If more cars went in following behind then it would be far more difficult to pass through.
If they were lucky then they just needed to put their efforts towards moving the obstructions placed there.
That would require checking for the keys or hot wiring the cars so that they could be driven out of the way.
There were always reasons why they were arranged that way and it could be explained that they were there by accident or coincidence but Brick did not believe it for a second.
He remembered that there would always be some people that set up road blocks in order to keep zombies out of a certain area but depending on the people behind it, they could be aiming to keep other humans out too.
There were plenty of people in the apocalypse who believed they could do what they wanted without any rules or laws to keep them in check.
Setting up such obstructions did point towards them wanting to halt the zombies from entering their territory but another possibility came to mind and that was to wither keep others out or to make people travelling in that way be forced to stop.
If someone could seize the road and stop those travelling on it to make it difficult for them to turn back so soon then they could set up a trap.
They could pull people from the cars before they could turn back and would begin seizing everything they could from people that may have packed lots of things in their cars.
If that was not enough then there would be others that were not just willing to seize the supplies but also the car and the people too.
Depending on their way of dealing with the apocalypse and how they intended to treat other survivors, the fates of the survivors in their hands could be one where they were forcefully taken into the group or they would be constantly exploited until they died.
If it was not one of those situations then it was more likely that a group had claimed the road and set up a way to acquire supplies for themselves.
In order to deal with the lack of resources and to keep a firm hold over the territory, it was necessary to let people pass through in exchange for some things.
Whichever one it was, Brick did not wish to find out so it was better to avoid such troublesome encounters.
Even if he did fight and used his gun on humans in such a place, it would only result in drawing zombies there and the cars following would make it more difficult to turn back if there was a road block and zombies swarming the area.
The car made a safe turn back onto the road heading forward instead of turning left onto the street so many others followed behind.
As the cars passed by that street, a couple of figures emerged from behind the cars that were arranged and some others came from the nearby houses.
They were carrying pipes, knives and many others weapons in their hands.
Each of them had gang tattoos on their upper bodies, chain necklaces and messy clothes.
Upon seeing that their next victims disappear, one larger man stared off towards the direction the cars went. "Hmm.. so many survivors that were about to pass through this way. They may have evaded us but they must be aiming to go somewhere beyond here.
If that is the case then they will be moving around and taking the longer way. Hey shorty! Bring a map now! There must be another place that can hold many others if there are so many survivors moving together.
If there is so many people… there must be a decent place to hold up in and there must be enough supplies to let them do so. We may have struck gold."
He began to smile showing off his gold tooth as he thought about how his assumption could lead to a much bigger haul.
A shorter and thinner youth in their teens ran over holding a map before opening it up on the top of the car.
The youth did not have the same imposing aura as the others around him and it seemed like he was just someone that was being made use of by them.
He looked on the map studying the routes for some time then spoke. "Boss… if you look here then these are the possible routes that they could take in the area. Unless they are planning on travelling for a very long time then they will likely stop in several areas.
Unless they plan on throwing living or dead from homes to give themselves a safe place to stay then they must already have a place to stay. If I am to make a guess then it needs to be somewhere bigger and possibly somewhere that could handle many people.
Among those on this route or the possible routes they could have take go around further down that road, I would guess that they will come across one place in particular. If it is not there then they will have to stop at a petrol station to refuel so they would be heading here or here."
