Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 A day at "the Dent"

'Finally I have finish this books Martin taught while closing the old book of Mitra. It was used as a learning manual. Being the only book in the in Mitra used it to teach Martin to write and read his language.

It was a story about two brothers who had fled their farm because their country had been invaded by an evil wizard king. In their flight they had crossed a magic mountain and had found Brogo's eggs, a flying creature of a gigantic size. After stealing the eggs they had raised one of his creatures each. After several years they had returned home flying on the backs of these beasts defeating the evil king. One of the brothers had been crowned king and the other would have founded an order of flying knights.

And know after several weeks of hard studying Martin could almost have a normal conversation with everyone. He has always been clever and he had found that this language had not been so complicated to learn

He learned a lot during these last weeks. First Mitra was eleven years old and had always lived with her father in the small village of Hena of the kingdom of Perendel.

It was a small village lost in the countryside. the villagers lived mainly from agriculture except for a hunter, a woodcutter and Jho with his inn. The inn name was "The Den".

Most of the locals met there in the evening because it was the only place they could find alcohol in the area. The closest city Nakoho was two days in bicrien, a kind of big ostrich without feathers and without wings but with scales. They had huge legs looking more like reptile legs with . Like T-Rex according to Martin. This creatures served as mounts as well as draft animals.

He learned also that the woman that heal him was a Lupar, an apprentice magician from the crimson pantacle order. An Order of mage serving the royalty of Perendel. Mages as her left to travel the kingdom in order to perfect their apprenticeship. Their main mission was to help people with their magic. She had arrived the day before Martin's arrival and had left while he slept. He was very lucky because otherwise his recovery would have been much longer.

"You're done? Give it back to me." Mitra told him cheekily, taking the book from his hand

"Yes, anyway Pouco should be there soon" Martin replied.

Pouco was the woodcutter and twice a week he delivered wood to the inn. Wood that Martin had to split. A large amount of wood was used every day between the kitchen and the fireplace in the dining room.

And as usual Pouco arrived at the same time.

Martin get out of the inn to help him unload his cart pulled by two bicrien and full of logs.

"Good morning Pouco, how are you today?" Martin asked him

" Well son, my arms are tired, my back is hurting me, but I have to keep chopping wood so I can eat." Pouco replied." Come on son, help me. The sooner we unload the cart the sooner I can go to rest, so hurry up."

When they were done, Pouco went on his way. Martin grabbed the ax and began chopping the wood into smaller pieces. Thanks to the physical efforts he provided every day Martin had lost weight and even gained a bit of muscle. 'If this continues, I won't be able to wear these pants anymore.' he says to himself. He wore rudimentary clothes donated by Jho.

When he finished, he took some of the wood back to the sled and took the rest to the kitchen. Jho and Mitra were waiting for him. Jho had already started preparing lunch and Mitra was sitting on the work surface. Both were laughing. Jho put flour on Mitra's nose which escalated into a flour fight. Both had finished all white. Martin put on an apron and helped Jho with his task. The meal of the day was to be a stew. They had prepared the vegetables but they were still waiting for the meat which had to be delivered by the hunter's son. It was strange he usually came early.

At that moment five men dressed in black and with sinister faces entered the inn.

"Boss brings us food and drink! And for our mounts too!"

One of them says out loud and all of them seated at a table. Jho went to bring them a drink. "Today it's vegetable broth, it's coming in a moment"

One of the men just nodded and Jho went to prepare their bowls of broth. Meanwhile, Martin had gone to distribute grain to the mounts that remained outside in front of the inn and filled the through with water from a nearby well. He entered the inn and Jho handed him the bowls to serve.

He approached their table 'These men must be soldiers they wear armor under their black dress and swords in their belt' he though.

Then he heard them talking.

"This is not good, the war is not far away I tell you." one announced. "Shut up, the server is there." another answered him and the first become silent immediately.

They gulped down their meal at full speed, without a word, finished their beers and left in a hurry, losing a few copper coins on the table.

Martin picked up the bowls, chops and coins, quickly cleaned the table with a rag and returned to the kitchen.

"Who were they ?" He asked Jho

"Sentinels of Belvu Castle. They guard the border with the Kingdom of Gratos. It's not so far. A few days by bicrien. They probably have to deliver a message to Nokoho." Jho reply It before adding,

"That doesn't bode well. It's never a good sign to see the sentinels around here."

The door of the inn opened again.

Brionde the hunter, entered with the carcasses of the animals he had hunted early that morning.
