Chapter 7 - Provisions

A few minutes later Basilius had gone past the first layer of concrete, the insulation, and second layer of concrete, entering the room behind his own.

There Basilius found quite a pitiful sight. It seemed the floor above this room had collapsed on the bed of the person while he was sleeping and had crushed him, although Basilius had no idea who his neighbour was he knew it was a man as he could see a masculine unmoving hand in between the rubble.

It was really unfortunate because if the person had stood anywhere else other than his bed he would have survived.

Basilius felt a bit glum seeing this scene and just began checking the goods that were in the mini fridge and cupboard that seemed to be unscathed.

He found some 5 bottles of water and 2 bottles of soda, along with three packets of beef jerky which cheered Basilius up a bit, along with an apple. Basilius put the food and drinks in two separate trash bags he had brought along and ate the apple as he hadn't had breakfast yet, it would spoil soon anyway.

After quickly finishing the apple Basilius slowly opened the door leading to the communal hallway, leaving the door wide open so he could enter again, he exited the room.

With the metal rod in one hand and trash bags in the other he carefully checked his surroundings. It seemed the hallway was partially caved in with dust littering the floor but it was nothing Basilius could not get past.

Seeing no signs of monsters Basilius sighed and walked into the hallway, where he began destroying the door to the left, it took three powerful kicks to make the door break open confirming to Basilius that his strength had definitely improved.

He stepped inside the room seeing that it was completely untouched, Basilius thought it was strange that he did not find a person until he began inspecting the VR-Cabin and after wiping of the dust discovered there was a young twenty year old looking woman laying peacefully inside.

Basilius quickly opened the cabin and got the girl out of it, however when he did he noticed the girl was already dead.

To make sure Basilius checked for a pulse at her wrist and neck however couldn't find one, in the end he decided to put her back in the VR-cabin as a sort of casket.

Basilius thought it was strange how the girl died, but continued with his search, he proceeded to check out the mini fridge and found more provisions which he stashed in his trash bags.

After that he went through the other doors on the left side.

Thirty minutes later Basilius had his trash bags full of provisions and had gone across 12 rooms, however , he had a very conflicted and slightly angry expression on his face as the other rooms except the ones that were caved outright killing the person, their situations were all the same as the twenty year old girl who had died in her VR-cabin, as they were all dead in their cabins and Basilius was confident someone had messed with it, and he was pretty certain who it was.

"Those M*ther Fucker's they knew about this"

In the begging Basilius thought the cabin might have short circuited and had killed the girl on accident however the more cases he saw, the more obvious it became that it was done intentionally as even in the case an electric problem occurred it should have never killed the host, as safety mechanisms were put in place to prevent such situations and even if one failed, it could not have possibly happened to 9 people in a row.

Along with that Basilius remembered that a month ago for everyone across the European union, maintenance was done to their VR-cabin's to give people a supposedly better gaming experience, it wasn't difficult for Basilius to connect the dots and figure out the EU government probably knew about this event and had likely tampered with the cabins, as they owned and oversaw everything to do with VR.

The only thing Basilius did not understand was, "What was their reason?".

Although Basilius thought it could be overpopulation he knew it wasn't a valid excuse as otherwise with current technology as long as the EU government desired it they could easily slaughter the people like lambs with gas or other insidious methods that would cause much less damage to infrastructure, So there was no reason to cause or to wait for such a catastrophe to enact their plan.

Basilius was extremely furious and knew he wouldn't figure out the reason that easily and either way he knew he could probably do nothing about it, however if he ever met those governmental bastards unless they were actually not responsible for these cataclysmic events he would never trust them again and would do everything in his power to take them down, even though he knew he himself was insignificant and it was probably just a fleeting thought at the moment he really felt that way.

His mind clouded Basilius then proceeded to angrily kick open the next door... only to find another creature in the room staring back at him blankly.

1 second

2 seconds

3 seconds

That was how long Basilius and the creature stared at each other before it decided too recklessly charge at Basilius.

"Fuck!"

Basilius's anger was immediately drowned by fear, although a bit less than last time. The creature itself looked different than last time, it looked incredibly bloated with fat rolls everywhere, and had an extremely wide mouth that extended from his right cheek to his left cheek making it seem unnatural, although it was still ash gray.

Basilius immediately jumped out of the way and ran in the direction of his room.

The creature acting like it was a bulldozer continued charging straight and went right through the first layer of concrete at the opposite side of the wall, unfazed the creature went out and charged at Basilius again.

In that time however Basilius had managed to create some distance between them and had placed the trash bags down and had taken out his cooking knives and tucked them in at both sides of his pants at his waist, for emergency use.

Basilius knew he had to fight in the hallway, hiding in a room was useless when the creature could easily destroy the door, and fighting in such a cramped space was not the best idea when using a long metal rod as it would be to cramped to make big movements so the hallway was a bit better as he could at least easily thrust his weapon forward.

Seeing the creature charge at him again Basilius tensed up, especially after he saw it was unscathed after crashing into a wall, so Basilius's first thought was to dodge the charge as it seemed to do so only in a straight line.

So, he would first dodge the monster and after would attack it from behind.
