Chapter 38 - EPISODE 37: TAKING BACK THE CONTINENT OF DESERTS

Jo-lan, the Masters and Students were finally back in their inn. A week had passed since the conference held in Gaeia amongst the representatives of the four continents ended.

"According to the king of Avalon, Estelle's father, it will take a while for the Summer Greenhouses to be ready. The engineers are still in the midst of experimentation and are currently making modifications to the Winter Greenhouses" Jo-lan informed everyone.

Estelle nodded, then she turned to face Harry.

"What did you and my father talk about after the conference?" Estelle asked curiously.

"For the most part, he was worried about you" Harry said.

"And the rest?" Estelle asked.

"He was wondering whether the greenhouse idea would be enough to take back the deserts. He wanted my opinion as the inheritor of the phoenix's mind" Harry said.

"And what was your reply?" Estelle asked.

"I said it might work but needed a bit of a push to expedite things" Harry said.

"What sort of push?" Estelle asked.

"Diggers" Harry said with a smile.

"That's a little vague. Care to explain?" Estelle asked.

"I'll explain later but for now, I need to write a letter" Harry said.

"To who?" Estelle asked.

"Fleur. We are going to need tons of drought resistant seeds again and I intend to make use of the time between now and when we resume our journey to make all the needed preparations" Harry said.

"I see" Estelle said.

"I also need to send a conceptual diagram regarding how I think the experts should set up the domes and everything else to Avalon" Harry said.

"Do your best" Estelle said and patted him on the back.

Harry smiled at her.

"I will" he said.

That night, everyone watched Harry as he worked busily. Josec, Buern and Estelle were impressed but the one who was most impressed was Jason.

"Harry's been putting in a lot of effort into everything he does lately" Buern said.

"Yeah, I've never seen him put this much effort into anything before" Josec said with a smile. "I've known Harry all my life and he's been a rather easy going fellow" Josec said.

"You once told me that when it comes to protecting others he's even more reliable than you are. I didn't take you seriously then but now…I see it" Buern said seriously.

She felt new admiration for Harry.

"The Harry I've always known has always been the kind to risk his life for strangers though I will admit that when I first met him, I did think of him as a tad bit annoying" Estelle confessed.

"I've known him as the only other person other than myself to reject all three dominant classes of Jo-lan and choose one of his own making so I've always kinda looked up to him as a role model" Jason confessed.

TWO WEEKS LATER…

Many ships arrived in Gaeia carrying drought resistant seeds. Harry entrusted these seeds into the king of Gaeia's care. The four continents had already begun sending food supplies to the continent of Deserts. Harry instructed the king of Gaeia to send the seeds once the Summer Greenhouses were ready.

Around the same time, a letter arrived from the king of Avalon. Diggers had been assembled and were currently headed for the continent of Deserts. The engineers were also very impressed with Harry's conceptual diagrams and copies of these diagrams were handed to the Diggers.

"Then I suppose it's finally time to head to the continent of Deserts. We'll have to keep Aeros distracted so that he doesn't interfere with their work" Master Fencer said.

Everyone agreed with this.

A WEEK LATER…

They were at the harbour once more preparing to board a ship headed for the continent of Deserts. When Harry stared at the ship, he began to shiver all over. Buern hit him hard on the back.

"Yep, it's time to steel yourself Bane. It's another trip by sea" she said.

"I feel really foolish saying this but I never thought I'd be more scared of a ship than I'm scared of Souryu" Harry said.

"You'll eventually get used to it Harry" Buern said with a laugh.

Then they all boarded the ship and finally commenced their journey towards the continent of Deserts. Their journey took an entire month this time.

A MONTH LATER…

They finally docked at the port to one of the major towns in the continent of Deserts. They rested for a week. Then they began to inquire of the Diggers. They discovered that the Diggers were currently working deep in the Desert. They psychorage improv.d and flew into the desert seeking the Diggers. Then from above, they began to notice something strange. All over the Desert were what appeared to be rings of canals. These rings of canals appeared to be separated from one another by an even distance and were connected to one another via streams of canals.

However, the canals were currently dry.

"It appears the Diggers have already begun their work" Harry noted.

Within the ringed canals were wide circular lands and bordering the exterior of the ringed canals were wide stretches of land enclosed by the streaming canals connecting the ringed canals to one another.

"I cannot see what the intention behind this is" Jason admitted.

"They haven't yet begun to construct canals connecting the sea to the ringed canals. Once they begin to do that, all the canals will be filled with water eventually creating multiple oases. The domes will be erected within the ringed canals. The water will cause the land around it to slowly grow fertile. We'll be planting shady trees all about the edges of the canals to shield them from the sun. The fertility of the soil will cause all sorts of plants to grow also allowing for cultivation of the soil creating the ripple effect the scientist at the conference spoke about. Basically, fertility will lead to more fertility and this will extend outwards from the domes eventually overlapping till the entire Desert is green" Harry explained.

"Impressive. Jo-lan, you should aid the Diggers along with the students. We'll head deeper into the Desert and keep Aeros distracted. Once everything has been set up, you may join us in battle" Master Fencer said.

The Students nodded and the Masters headed off.

THREE WEEKS LATER…

Canals had finally been dug connecting the ringed canals that were closest to the sea to the sea. The water flowed into these canals, then through the streaming canals into the next canals creating a chain effect till all the canals were filled up. Then shady trees were planted at the edges of the canals.

A MONTH LATER…

The engineers arrived on the continent of Deserts and began to set up the domes within the ringed canals. The Summer Greenhouses were made of an inner transparent rigid dome with the pores and an outer retractable dome made of a translucent material with the ability to filter off quite a bit of the sun's heat. The vents were made to pump in cool air instead of hot air and pipes were constructed from the canals to the interior of the dome to supply water when needed. Then the drought resistant seeds were sown.

TWO MONTHS LATER…

Signs of life began to appear outside the domes. The planted trees had already began to shade the canals.

THREE MONTHS LATER…

The ringed lands within the canals began to look like oases.

FOUR MONTHS LATER…

The life from these oases began to overlap and the desert began to look like a young forest.

FIVE MONTHS LATER…

Much of the Desert was now a forest. The canals had practically become rivers of salt water running throughout this forest. Jo-lan looked satisfied.

"It's finally time. You students should go and join the Masters in suppressing Aeros. Thanks to the vegetation covering most of the Desert, I doubt Aeros' sandstorms can currently reach this far" Jo-lan said.

The Students engaged their psychorage improvs and headed deeper into the continent of Deserts.
