Jaime scooted a chair and sat down, followed by the others; he still found it a little difficult to believe what they all saw with their own eyes. The rest of the survivors were scattered around the place near Wall Rose; they were all waiting for new orders, except for three from their group who weren't with them right now.
He had no idea what that Captain wanted to do with Eren, but he knew the man was up to no good by the look in his eyes; Jaime knew fear when he saw it, and fear could lead to foolish decisions to be made.
Jaime made sure to ask Krista and Ymir if they were alright. The freckles girl said that Krista was still a little shaken up by what happened in Trost, but all was good.
'Ymir, we might go out there again. Your duty is to protect Krista.'
"Jean, what should we do right now?" Marco asked, still sounding exhausted. Jean groaned loudly as he drank water from his bottle before looking at Marco.
"What do you expect us to do?" Jean asked, sounding a little irritated. "I still can't believe what I saw," he quickly added, looking back at Jaime.
"Yeah, you are not the only one. I thought I was going mad, but I-" Jaime's words trailed off as he drank cold water to refresh himself. "When I first saw that titan, I noticed he had the same eyes as Eren, but Armin told me he-" "Hey, shouldn't you be quiet about this." Marco quickly silenced him, looking around, trying to see if anyone had heard them.
"Marco, there's no point in keeping it a secret, the Captain is a madmen if he really thinks he can keep something like this a secret. Within a hour everyone here will already know, and within a day, even Wall Sina will be informed about this. IF there's a Wall Sina by the time this day ends. I know how this works, rumors like this will spread like wildfire, and there's nothing a captain like him can do to stop that, not even a Commander would be able to do much." Jaime said when they all heard footsteps from behind.
"You guys are still alive!!" Sasha shouted in relief and joy, soon joined by other cadets like Floch, Maka, and others.
Jaime felt a little flustered when Sasha leaned down and kissed his cheek out of nowhere. He could feel Annie's cold glare, and as he glanced at her furtively, he noticed that her glare was mostly directed at Sasha. To his surprise, Annie said nothing right now, but he was sure she was saving her punishment for later.
"Wait, where are Mikasa and Armin?" Sasha quickly asked, having heard from Connie that Eren was dead.
"Well, they are..." Marco tried to answer, still thinking of the Captain's orders to keep this quiet, but Jean groaned loudly before answering in his place.
"They are with Eren right now." Jean answered bluntly, causing many cadets, including Sasha, to gasp in shock.
"Wait! Isn't he dead? I heard Connie saying that he is dead!!" Floch shouted in disbelief, pointing at the shorty who seemed to have a hint of hope in his eyes at the thought of Eren still being alive.
"The bastard is still sucking air, but he might not for long." Jaime answered, quickly gaining the attention of everyone around him.
"What do you mean?" Annie quickly asked, and Reiner and Bertholdt seemed to be paying attention as well.
"That Captain is a novice; he was the Captain of the Supply Depot, but you all remember that we didn't see him at the Headquarters when we escaped the Titans. So that means he ran away like a coward, and now someone showed up with the ability to become a Titan. He will try to get rid of Eren in fear that he is even more dangerous than the Titans out there." Jaime revealed with a scoff, and what the others heard about Eren caused everyone who didn't know to start demanding answers from their fellow cadets.
"Hold on, how is Eren a Titan?"
"Is he dangerous?"
"Can he kill us all?"
"No, he's not dangerous." Everyone fell silent as Jaime exclaimed loud enough for everyone to hear; this made Jean look at him doubtfully.
"Jaime, do you trust him? This is Eren we are talking about, because of his foolishness, his entire squad was wiped out." Annie said bitterly with a hint of anger, looking up at Jaime.
He knew amongst the Training Corps. Besides him, Mina was someone that Annie considered a friend to a degree, so he could understand why Annie was so bitter and angry at Eren for what he did. Armin had explained that Eren had attacked in rage after Thomas's death, which resulted in the rest of the squad following him and getting killed by Titans.
"Yes. We can trust him." Jaime said determinedly, without a hint of doubt in his voice.
"Jaime, how are you so sure about this, we don't even know what he is?" Jean questioned, and from his voice, Jaime knew he was trying to see things in the same way as him. They all needed hope, and Jean was trying to find the same hope as Jaime.
"Eren can turn into a Titan. I still can't quite comprehend it," Sasha murmured to herself, but her voice was loud enough for everyone at the table to hear her.
"Yes, but I'm sure we can trust Eren," Floch quickly added to Sasha's words, earning the attention of those around the table and even other cadets who were sitting nearby.
"How can you be so sure? He turned into one of those things. How do we know he won't turn on us?" Connie questioned in a shaky voice, looking at the redhead pleadingly, hoping Floch would give them all a good reason not to be afraid of Eren.
"Floch is right, Connie, but I know we can trust Eren. I saw him kill those Titans; we all did. Eren might be the suicidal bastard, but right now, I think his ability is something he can learn to control, and soon, he might become our best asset yet. For five years, the people inside the walls never had hope. The Colossal Titan showed up, and we know he can show up again. We can do nothing to stop the hundreds, if not thousands, of Titans out there, but Eren can become that hope. Someone we can look up to every time we are thinking of giving up. This is why I believe Eren deserves a second chance, a chance to prove to us all that he is not just a mindless Titan like the rest of those fuckers out there. But He Is. One of Us." Jaime said with a convincing voice, not realizing the way they all were looking up to him.
"So you are willing to bet on Eren?" Annie questioned, still sounding doubtful.
"I'm with Jaime. He's right. I Trust in Eren," Reiner said with a bright smile as he stood up and walked up to him before patting Jaime on the shoulder. The short cadet felt a little weird standing beside Reiner since he was taller and larger than him; it felt like standing next to a bear.
BOOM!
"What was that? This came from inside—" Before the soldier could finish, Jaime was already airborne, ODM gear cables hissing as they propelled him forward. Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt followed close behind.
"Oii, wait!!" Jean's voice carried over the wind as he launched himself after them.
Jaime landed hard on the last rooftop, his boots sliding on the tiles. The sight before him made his breath catch. Through clearing dust, a half-formed Titan emerged – skinless, legless, its massive ribcage forming a protective cage around three familiar figures: Mikasa, Armin, and Eren.
Below, the Garrison soldiers scrambled to reload their cannons, their movements frantic and uncoordinated. Captain Weilman's voice cut through the chaos, thick with fear and hysteria.
Then Armin stepped forward, emerging from the smoke like a ghost.
"You finally showed yourself, monster!" Weilman's voice cracked. "You have nowhere to go!!"
What happened next made Jaime's heart swell with pride. Armin, the same boy who'd once trembled during hand-to-hand combat training, stood tall before a wall of loaded guns.
"He is not the enemy of mankind!" Armin's voice rang clear and strong. "We are willing to cooperate with the military and share all the information we have!"
"I'm not interested in hearing your pleas!" Weilman spat back. "How can we believe you when that monster has shown its true form?! Prove it's not humanity's enemy, or we'll kill them now!"
"There is no need for proof!" Armin's reply was sharp as a blade. "The question is not what we think of him!"
"What did you say?!"
"Everyone here witnessed it!" Armin's words carried across the courtyard. "You all saw how they fought against the titans... how the titans attacked him! The titans see him as they see us – prey to be devoured! That is an undeniable fact!"
Jaime watched as the soldiers' resolve wavered, their weapons lowering slightly as murmurs spread through their ranks.
"He makes sense..."
"But a titan ally..."
"Could it be possible..."
But fear had its claws too deep in Weilman. "Prepare to attack!" he screamed. "Don't fall for their tricks! The titans' ways are beyond our understanding! They could have learned to become human, to speak our language! We can't let them deceive us!"
What happened next would be seared into Jaime's memory forever. Armin slammed his fist against his chest in a perfect salute, his voice carrying the weight of humanity's hopes.
"I am a soldier who swore to give his life for humanity's glory!" The words thundered across the courtyard. "There is no greater honor than to die for this noble cause! If we combine our strength with a titan's power, we can reclaim this city! I beg you, for humanity's future! Allow me, in my final moments, to explain the strategic value of a titan fighting on humanity's side!"
Holy shit, Armin. Jaime adjusted his grip on his ODM gear triggers. You magnificent bastard.
The soldiers lowered their guns for a moment, but then the Captain ordered.
"Prepare the Cannons!!" Shot!!
A round of gasps was heard from the soldiers.
"Who dares to shot at us!!" The Captain exclaimed in fear as the bullet hit the ground near his feet.
"That would be me." Jaime said, standing behind one of the cannons. The soldier who used the cannon was on the ground unconscious, and Jaime was holding a smoking gun over his shoulder.
"You Traitor, you dare side with the Enemy!" the captain exclaimed loudly, his eyes growing fearful, but Jaime merely scoffed at the sight of their guns now pointing at him instead.
"The only traitor I see here is you." Jaime declared loud enough for everyone to hear.
"What Did You Say? How dare you accuse me of Treason, you Ally of this Monster!" the captain shouted with even more panic than before, raising his hand and ready to order everyone to shoot at Jaime.
"You abandoned your own troops at the Supply Depot. Because of this, they didn't know what to do, and many soldiers died because they were left without gas. When we entered the Headquarters, the survivors told us that you abandoned them to their fate to hide behind Wall Rose. You Are the Only Traitor Here!" Jaime exclaimed without a hint of doubt in his voice, pointing a finger at the Captain, who flinched as if struck before backing away.
The soldiers looked at one another, lowering their guns. Some looked at the Captain with anger and suspicion, especially Rico. "Sir, is this True? Did you really abandon your own position?" she questioned with a narrowed gaze.
"DO NOT BELIVE THEIR LIES. HE IS WITH THE TITAN. YOU CANNOT BELIVE ANY OF HIS LIES." The Captain was obviously panicking; he looked white and on the verge of falling unconscious, but Jaime wasn't done with this fool.
"You call me a liar. The Survivors of the Supply Depot are right there, we can ask them, and they will say the same thing. You abandoned your own soldiers. You are no Captain. You are a coward. And all the survivors there can tell you one more thing. Eren Yeager fought for us. Even as a Titan, he only targeted the other mindless Titans, so tell me. Does Eren Yeager deserve a chance to prove to us all that he is not just a mindless Titan?" Jaime finished his speech, and the sound of guns clattering on the floor was heard as all the soldiers dropped their guns and the cannons no longer aimed at Armin.
"What are you doing?! This is Treason!" The Captain elbowed in panic, but no one was listening to him anymore.
"The only treason I see here is you leaving your position, Captain Weilman." Everyone looked down to see an army of soldiers had arrived, and in front of them was Commander Pyxis.
Whew! We are safe! Jaime almost cheered in joy as he used his ODM Gear to land near Armin.
"C-Commander, I-I-I-" "I don't want to hear another word, Captain Weilman. Once we are done here today, I want you in my office to discuss your position," the commander said in a commanding voice. The Captain seemed like he wanted to argue before lowering his head in defeat and walking away.
Armin fell to his knees in relief, and Mikasa and Eren slowly walked out as Jaime arrived at their position.
"Thank you, Jaime." Mikasa said with a smile of gratitude the moment he approached. "I guess we own you another one." She added sheepishly, but the four of them quickly saluted as Commander Pyxis walked up to them, a golden glint in his eyes.
"What are your names, Cadets?"
"Jaime."
"Armin Arlert."
"Mikasa Ackerman."
"Eren Yeager."
The commander looked at each one before his eyes landed on Jaime. "Okay, put them down. I'm just an old man; there's no need to salute," the commander said in a friendly voice before continuing. "That was quite a speech, cadet, Jaime."
"I just said what I think, Commander," Jaime said right away with resolve before looking at his friends over his shoulder; he could tell Mikasa was still tense and was almost using her body to hide Eren from the Commander.
"Guys, you are safe now. This is Commander Pyxis, unlike Captain Moron. We can trust him." Jaime quickly added, and Mikasa sighed in relief before sidestepping as Eren stepped forward.
"I think I have seen your face before, cadet Jaime." The Commander suddenly claimed.
"I...I don't think so, Commander. All I know about you is that you are a good Commander. If I had known you before, I would have definitely boasted about it," Jaime said humorously, and the Commander chuckled in amusement before looking at Eren.
"Alright, you three come with me," the commander said before turning on his heels and walking away from them.
"Hey, Jaime." He turned to face Eren, who smiled at him. "Did you really mean it? Your words. You said you believe in me."
"That's because I do. All I said. I meant every single word, Eren. I'm not one to lie for something like this, now go. And Armin make sure Eren doesn't open his big mouth." Jaime japed, and the blonde chuckled as he walked past Jaime, patting him on the back, soon followed by Eren.
"Mikasa?" Jaime questioned, wondering why she, of all people, was still here and not going after Eren; he knew how important he was to her.
"Jaime." She said his name gently and warmly, catching him a little off guard, but that was nothing when she threw her arms around him and gave him a hug. "Thank you for helping us."
Jaime didn't know what else to do but hug her back. "Hey, you are my friend. I will always protect you, and make sure to always keep close that drawing I gave you. It will always remind you what you are fighting for." Jaime said with a tender voice before pulling away.
Mikasa looked flustered from the heat as she reached into her pocket, revealing the small painting he had made of them he had seen in his dream. "I always keep it close."
"Good. Now, go and protect Eren." Jaime said; she smiled back at him before running past him.
Once, she was out of his earshot. Jaime knew he had at most one more hour of rest before they were all sent out there again.
.
.
"Still here? I thought you went after Sasha," Annie said with an icy cold tone. Jaime chuckled in amusement as he walked up to her. Their secret meeting place wasn't exactly a hotel, but they didn't really care.
"I would have, but someone is holding my heart hostage, and I can't go anywhere without it," Jaime said cheekily as he approached her.
She rolled his eyes at his antics but still smiled in amusement; she couldn't believe that such ridiculous words could make her feel so good. She didn't understand why this happened anymore. Was it Love? She didn't know, but she still had a role to play.
"Oh, if you are missing your heart so much, then perhaps you should take it back and give it to someone else," Annie said with a challenging look. Her voice missed the coldness it had with everyone else; she could speak so softly only with Jaime; it felt right to talk like that with him.
"No," Jaime said as he put his arm around her waist, bringing her closer to him. My heart is in the right place because I know you will never drop it," he said with love in his eyes before closing the distance and kissing her on the lips.
Annie moaned into the kiss; her fingers went through his hair, bringing him closer; she wanted to feel more of him. She needed him like she needed... Annie kissed him back, and she moaned again when his hands gripped her ass cheeks through her pants and lifted her up; her legs went around his waist. They were alone in a corner, and no one was nearby to see them.
'Jaime. Are you here?'
The two pulled away instantly when they heard someone calling out his name from afar. They could feel each other's breaths, but the two knew this needed to wait. "I guess duty is calling us."
"...Yes," Annie said reluctantly before pulling away from him.
"You know, I wouldn't mind continuing this after everything is said and done today."
"You shouldn't get cocky, Jaime. Make sure to keep your distance." Annie scolded him, but he knew she was just concerned for him, which felt good. He quickly placed his hands on her cheeks, causing her to look up at him.
"I will never leave you, Annie. I promise you." Jaime said with resolve, and Annie looked at him, her eyes almost red for the first time since her father, her eyes burned with unshed tears.
"Then keep that promise, you moron. Or I will come and drag you back to the hell that is our world." Annie promised him with a look of love. Jaime chuckled before leaning forward and kissing her lips one last time. Then, he turned and walked away, with Annie staying behind for a few minutes.
She watched as he walked; once he was out of her vision, she slammed her forehead against the wall, blood dripping down as steam engulfed her injury. What am I doing? Annie wondered, remembering his words about his heart.
She knew she would break it into thousands of pieces. She knew what would happen once he found out what she truly was, but despite knowing that, she didn't want to let go of this...this warm feeling every time he was close to her. He always made her feel in ways she had never felt before. Feelings she didn't want to let go, to never let go. She knew it was selfish; she should have never done this to him; in the end, his heart would shatter because of her. She had known from the beginning, and still, her selfish heart had returned back his feelings.
Later
At the top of the Wall, Rose, Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and Jaime were drinking from water canteens and chewing on military rations. Of them, the one who needed it the most was Eren, who looked pale and tired.
The cadets immediately strike a professional stance and salute the man with the highest authority over the southern troops.
"Okay, cadets, rest up," Commander Pyxis rejected the greeting while chuckling. "I'm too old for the strain of up-and-coming cadets like you."
The Commander took a sip from his flask as he looked over the edge of the wall at the large number of titans futilely trying to reach him as they clawed at the wall.
"I don't see any..." Pixis muttered to himself with a look of disappointment. "I wouldn't mind being devoured by an attractive female titan."
"All Titans I have seen today are all ugly motherfuckers." Jaime commented with a small smile.
Pixis laughed heartily as Mikasa, Armin, and Eren looked at them in disbelief. Mikasa was certain that the commander had a few screws loose.
The cadets followed him and began to tell Commander Pyxis everything.
"You are Cadet Arlert, is that correct?" Pixis asked, looking directly at Armin.
"Yes, sir!" Armin answered, giving a military salute.
"Earlier you said that you have a plan to plug the hole in Wall Rose, care to elaborate," Commander Pyxis said with a small glint in his golden eyes. When they were waiting for the food to arrive, Armin had told Pyxis that he had a plan to plug the wall.
"What I meant at the time was that Eren could transform back into a titan to plug the hole in the gate wall with that giant rock in the middle of the city. While he is doing that, he will need cover from the Titans," Armin admitted, his eyes flickering at the giant boulder in the middle of the city as he said that.
Commander Pixis seemed to reflect on his words as he turned his back on him and went back to studying the city of Trost.
"With those words, you have already convinced me, boy." Pyxis said, taking another drink from his flask.
Wiping any remaining drink from his mouth, Pixis walked over and knelt before Eren.
"What do you say, Cadet Jaeger?"
"Sir?" Eren asked, confused.
"Are you capable of covering the hole in the outer door?" The commander asked authoritatively.
"I'm not sure, Commander." Eren admitted, and the commander cleared his throat before addressing him again.
"Alright, let me rephrase that. Cadet Yeager, will you close the gate or not?" His tone made Eren and his friends shudder, knowing this was a direct order.
"Eren." Jaime called him, causing the boy to look at him. "I know this is difficult, but remember what the cost was." Jaime said comfortingly, placing his hand on Eren's shoulder.
"Cost?"
"Mina, Milyus, and Nac. They died so you could find out about your ability, remember their sacrifice, and remember what is in the line." Jaime said strictly pointing at Armin, Mikasa, and the rest of the Territory of Wall Rose, and beyond. This made Eren's eyes widen in realisation, tears running down his face, only now remembering what had happened to his squad. He swallowed thickly as he wiped the tears from his face, giving Jaime a look as to say 'Thank you' before looking back at the Commander.
"I will," Eren assured with a determined look on his face. "I'm going to do it. That wall will be plugged by the end of this day!" Eren spoke with fire in his eyes.
Pixis nodded, pleased, and put his hands on Eren's shoulders.
"Well said," praised the Commander before looking at Jaime.
"I heard you killed the most titans, only behind Eren when he was a titan, is that correct?" Pyxis questioned.
"I didn't really count sir, but can I tell you something?" Jaime asked, and the old Commander merely shrugged his shoulders before motioning for him to follow him.
Later
"SOLDIERS!" A booming voice was heard throughout the place. "ATTENTION!"
The Commander's shrill cry instantly silenced all the soldiers at the foot of the wall.
"Next, I'm going to explain our strategy to take back the Trost district! The objective of this operation is to cover the hole in the outer door!"
The soldiers at the foot of the wall looked at the Commander in disbelief as they began to murmur with doubt and suspicion.
"Allow me to introduce you to the one who will perform the task of plugging the hole!" He made an addition to Eren, who took a step forward and made a military salute. "It's cadet Eren Jaeger!"
The members of Troop 104 looked dumbfounded at Eren on top of the wall.
"He is the result of a secret experiment that consists of transforming humans into titans!" Pixis explained. "He can create a titan body and wield it at will!"
Among the ranks of Troop 104 cadets, Connie widened his eyes in alarm and turned to question Ymir and Sasha.
"Hey, I don't understand what the Commander is saying. But that doesn't mean I'm an idiot, does it?" Connie asked, completely confused.
"Be quiet stupid," Ymir replied with annoyance.
"Once transformed into a titan, he will pick up the giant rock near the outer gate, carry it on his shoulders to the hole in the gate and cover it up! Your duty will be to defend the cadet from the titans while carrying the rock!"
As Commander Pixis explained the operation to the soldiers at the foot of the wall, Armin, accompanied by Mikasa, discussed the strategy with the garrison officers.
"Titans are drawn to crowds of people. Taking advantage of that, we can attract them to the inner wall and thus clear Eren's path without having to directly face the titans. Once all the titans have gathered, we can eliminate them with the cannons installed on top of the wall. But we won't be able to leave Eren defenseless either, so he will have to be escorted by a select group of soldiers trained to protect them. Also, it is likely that more titans will enter through the hole and have to be fought against. So the role of escorts will be crucial." Armin explained, earning nods of approval from the soldiers around him.
Among the line of soldiers at the foot of the wall, Commander Pixis's statement caused murmurs of disbelief among the ranks.
"Carry that big rock?" One soldier asked in disbelief.
"Does that mean that humans can finally manipulate the titans?" Another asked with a slight hint of hope in his voice.
"You're lying!" shouted one soldier. "None of us wants to go out there again, just to die like fools from the Titans!"
His scream, filled with fear and panic, began to fill the ranks with the soldiers. Many of them expressed their disbelief and opposition to the Commander's plan, which they classified as crazy, before turning around and starting to walk away. Many did not want to face the Titans again, while others just wanted to spend their time complaining to them with their families.
"This is bad," Ian said, watching the increasing numbers of soldiers begin to walk away.
"Yeah..." Rico agreed. "If we don't do something, the situation will get out of hand."
"Traitors!" Captain Weilman yelled, drawing one of his blades before pointing it at the soldiers, trying to walk away. "I hope you're ready, defectors! Because I'm going to kill you here and now!"
"I have made the decision!" Pixis announced in the same booming voice, drawing the attention of all the soldiers present. "Deserters will not receive any punishment! When one succumbs to the terror of the titans, they are unable to face them again! Those who fear the titans, can go! And those who wish to see their family, friends and loved ones succumb to that same fear, can go too!"
The soldiers who had decided to leave the place stopped upon hearing the Commander's words. Many trembled in their position, and each of them thought of their loved ones. And what would happen if they decided to give up the fight right now? They all turned and walked back to their positions with a somber but determined expression on their faces.
"I'll tell you about the attempt to take back Wall Maria four years ago, although I'm going to assume you remember it very well!" Pixis continued. "Officially, it was a plan to recover the territory, but in reality it was a government maneuver to get rid of all those it could not support! A purge to remove excess mouths to feed! Although no one talks about it because those of us left inside the walls survived due to the sacrifice of those who were sent outside the walls!"
"All mankind, including me, bears that sin!" Pixies yelled. "There was no conflict because the citizens of Wall Maria were few! But what will happen this time?! If Wall Rose falls, we will lose more than a fifth of the population! The interior of Wall Sina can only hold half of humanity! If the human race is extinct, it will not be because of the titans, but because we humans will have killed each other!"
"We cannot die within these narrow walls! That's why I'm asking you, if we must die, let's do it here!" Commander Pyxis finished his speech; this convinced everyone to stay and fight for the future of Humanity.
The counterattack plan began shortly after Pixis's speech. The cannons that were installed on top of the walls aimed at the hordes of Titans were attracted by the large number of soldiers that acted as bait in the corner of the Trost District, as far away as possible from the rock that Eren would have to raise a once became a titan. They would have to eliminate as many of the Titans as possible before Eren, along with the elite squad that would be in charge of protecting them and the cleaning squad of the outer gate, took action.
"Cadet Jaime, you are the Captain of the first Squad. Make sure no more Titans enter the City." Ian ordered and Jaime nodded in understanding, knowing he would be in the frontline.
"Jaime," Mikasa said, worried for him.
"I will be fine. I have been in hell twice now and I have returned. I will return again." Jaime said determinedly as he prepared himself.
"Damn right, Jaime. With you there. I know I will be safe." Eren said with a hint of admiration.
"Ackerman," Ian said, accompanied by Rico. Join the Jaeger escort squad. Your skills will be useful in this mission."
Mikasa perked up at his words. She knew she could protect Eren in case something happened.
"Okay, enough. Let's start the operation," Ian interrupted. With that, Jaime looked at the trio.
"Eren. Mikasa. Armin. We will celebrate after this." Jaime said with a lighthearted laugh before jumping down, using his ODM Gear, flying towards the destroyed gate.
I will be safe. I will return to you...Anni— I will always protect you, Historia...
