Chereads / Shaped Truth / Chapter 30 - Lurking in the Abyss

Chapter 30 - Lurking in the Abyss

There was a small planet, and there lived a child.

The child wandered aimlessly across vast rocky and grassy fields in search of flowers.

One day, she found a flower and tried to grab it, but the wind blew it up before she could.

She followed the flower without caring or noticing where she was actually going.

The flower eventually stopped, and she picked it.

When she looked around her, she noticed a pitch-black ravine in front of her. If she had walked just a bit more she might have fallen.

She also noticed the flower on her hand quickly turn completely dark, as if light simply decided to abandon it.

She crouched and gazed into the abyss, and the abyss gazed back.

"Hello? Is someone there?"

"Return from where you came, infant. This a place for no children.", the abyss replied.

"You must be lonely down here..."

"I am everywhere there is dark, for I am the dark, and the dark is me. Loneliness is inapplicable."

"You sound pretty bored. Want an apple?"

"I do not require sustenance."

"How about a flower?"

"I do not desire gifts."

"How about I go down there so we can chat a little better?"

"My shape is manifested within this darkness. To touch it is to drive yourself into insanity and nonbeing."

"Are there more of you out there?"

"I have a brother and a sister."

"How do they look like? Are they like you?"

"...No. My brother is shaped like war, and my sister is shaped like punishment and justice. I'm simply me, the void. But this is not my true shape."

"Oh?"

"When mother gave birth to me, I was axiomatically darkness and the void, but now I'm something greater. Within time, I grew into a further abstract state, devoid of all that is and that isn't, neither Being nor Non-Being. You, who are speaking now to me, are only doing so because I allowed you to understand in your own foundations of comprehension. In normal circumstances, you would not be able to even realize or fathom me, for I'm a Nothing devoid of conception and postulation. Not even mother should have dominion of my shape now."

"Wow, you sound pretty powerful. I've seen some very strong alien entities descend down to our home planet. Some good, some evil..."

"I only do what mother commands or what my siblings ask to. When they don't, I do nothing, for I am nothing."

"So have you done bad things?"

"I'm outside your idea of good and evil, child. Do not try."

"Hmm...sometimes I wish I was like you, you know, all-powerful and free to do anything you want. There is not much to do on this little planet, and I can't get outside of it too. I'm also the only one left of my species. It's a bit lonely sometimes...Sorry, I forgot, these terms are probably inapplicable to you too.

"..."

"You seem awfully unaware of a lot of things. How about I teach you about friendship?"

"Do as you wish."

And so the abyss and the child kept chatting for the rest of the day.

He, who until then lived mostly hidden and within the constraint of darkness and the void, for he was those things, started to curiously ponder about the living and the light.
