Chapter 1 - The Beginning

Dominic Cross was your normal American adult by first glance, standing at 5' 10" and weighing 200 pounds, had the muscle to do the task but untoned to deceive others. But upon closer inspection and knowledge of him you would be surprised by the truth he hid from the world. Dominic could see the other side of life. The hidden world that only a few others understood and knew was there.

One morning as Dominic was getting ready to head home from work, wearing his typical black jeans, black steel toe boots and loosely hung muscle shirt one of the spirits that lingered around him normally whispered in his ear "Dominic there is something evil coming. I can't tell you when, but it will be soon, you must prepare immediately." Dominic just nodded his head at the spirit, still only half awake as he slowly walked towards the door to leave. As he grabbed the handle of the door a vision flashed before his eyes, showing his small town engulfed in darkness, lights flickering rapidly and the screams of people around him echoing through the air. A large figure standing in the middle of the road was looking towards his house, red eyes like blood glowing through the darkness pierced his very being. Dominic quickly released the icy cold handle, his breathing quick and shallow as if he was just submerged in a pool of ice.

He looked to the spirit for advice, but the words wouldn't come out, he just stood there staring unable to think clearly, the eyes still burned into his mind clouding his thoughts. Suddenly his phone let out a loud ring, startling him back to reality. He quickly dug the phone from his pocket to answer it. He glanced down at his phone, noticing it was work he quickly answered. There was an incident at the facility, it was on lock down and all work for the day was cancelled. Dominic sighed a breath of relief but knew it was going to be short lived. There was a shooting there and no one knew when they would reopen to continue the regular shifts or if they were going to be closing. He knew it had something to do with what he seen when he had grabbed the door handle. Dominic told his boss that he understood and hung up the phone. After he hung up with his boss, Dominic ran to his room and grabbed his old rucksack from when he served in the military. It was five years since his discharge but knew he could still walk for days if it was required, today it was going to be required to walk miles instead. Dominic loaded up his rucksack with protein bars, water, change of clothes, and other emergency items in case he did not return that night and headed out the door, locking the dead bolt and door handle after he had closed the door.

Dominic walked down the concrete walkway that lead to his house, the grass abnormally green for the season as fall was soon to arrive. The birds were cheerfully chirping away without a care in the world as they flew around and ate seed from the feeders hanging in his yard. He thought to himself "If only they knew what was coming, they wouldn't be so cheerful. They would be scared for their lives and would be fleeing." As Dominic got closer to the sidewalk, he turned towards the south-west, the direction of his job and what he seen increased the desire to get away from the town quickly to begin his preparations. He seen a large black energy above where his job was, as he stared for longer, he started to notice the demonic entities inside of this energy cloud. They were moving slowly, taking shape before disappearing into each other. He knew this was a bad omen if they were beginning to form. The meaning was clear, it wasn't just one entity he had to worry about but multiple. He started to wonder how long he really had to prepare just as he noticed the cloud descending closer to the ground. He turned on his heel and quickly began to take long 3-inch strides at a faster than normal pace towards the north-east. Heading along the sidewalk towards the mountains and woodland of the area.

As Dominic walked towards the edge of town, he started to hear voices coming from behind him, telling him he can't do it. He can't stop the darkness that is coming. He will fail at this task; he was nothing and will forever be nothing. Dominic quickly looked behind him to see who or what was telling him these horrible things. When he looked behind him, he could not see anything. The streets were deserted, a white grocery bag flew carried by the breeze that seemed to come from the south-west direction. Old discarded news papers fluttered across the streets, some getting stuck on fences, others on mailbox poles. The voices continued its banter against him, trying to persuade him not to continue forward. Dominic firmed his desires to protect those around him and push forward to escape the voices of those he could not see. He knew the darkness he foresaw was still coming, but now that they were trying to persuade him to turn around and to give up, he knew he had to get to the woodlands in the mountains as quickly as possible.
