Chapter 63 - Worms

Layo sent her strands in all directions, pushing enemies back and since they had no cohesion whatsoever, the ones that weren't pushed back continue advancing, separating themselves from the security providided by the mob.

This way, Molarine and Molbas were able to easily pick them up little by little, reducing their numbers to zero in no time.

Only the one clogging up the wheels were still alive but they didn't appear to want to move at all, it seemed like the creator of those worms could only give them one order.

"Something is off" remarked Laura with her hands placed near her ears, as if trying to hear something better.

"That wasn't all of the people in this town but everything is perfectly silent" she added after a second.

'Are you finally realising?' thought someone that could barely see them with her own eyes.

'My little babies need time to properly hatch...'

"They should be ready just about... Now" she whispered as she counted down with her fingers, letting the last one down right as the sound of bursting flesh erupted everywhere in the town.

The group was quickly faced with what could be described as skinned people with a secondary skull peeking through their destroyed face.

The grown worms climbed up on the surroundings buildings and habitations with a agility as they shrieked at the group below, sending splatters of blood in the process.

These were much faster and somewhat stronger than their infant counterparts, they also had more cohesion with one another even if it wasn't exactly perfected.

When it came to durability, the difference wasn't noticeable as the punches and swordstrikes still destroyed them completely and since they were too fast to repeat the earlier strategy, Layo also went in on the offensive, piercing them with her strands and blowing them up from the inside by shouting condensed balls of her mana from the strands.

It was definitely a harder challenge but looking from afar, hidden behind a door, the assailant had her eyes wide open and had started grinding her teeth.

She was satisfied with the damage done, even if it was light as more of her worms were on their way here but something urgent was happening.

'Where is that fortune teller girl?' she wondered, trying her best to find the otherworlder but failing miserably, she had left at one point without her noticing.

'This is bad! She's the top target! Did she manage to find out where I was? Is she just out of my sight but not actually gone?!' she started panicking, thinking about the prospect of being the one that let the fortune teller go.

'What should I do? Should I have my worms search for her or should I keep the pressure on the other three?' she wondered, not counting the parrot which seemed to not be doing anything anyways.

Her vision suddenly darkened as she finally got her answer, Laura flung the door open, letting her witness the worm enthusiast crawling away until her back struck against the end of the tool shed she had been holed up in.

The worm user suddenly stood up, her back and hands still against the wall to support her sickly, thin frame, her face was contorted with a complicated expression that was trying to convey too many emotions at once.

'She's a magic caster, if I get close, I will be able to get her with my stinger!' was the thought that went through her head in a fraction of a second before she pushed herself off the wall and rushed toward Laura.

Laura didn't seem to try and use magic at all for she was already grasping something with her hand, she swung her right arm resulting in the flat surface of a shovel colliding with the head of the worm enjoyer.

It wasn't exactly a hard hit but it was more than enough to send her to the ground, she had barely been able pull out her stinger.

'A stinger on the tongue, she went around the whole town and stung people with her tongue...' Laura thought about that fact as she raised the shovel above her head before smacking her again a couple of times, just to be sure.

As she lost consciousness, the grown worms collapsed and dried up, some even catching on fire.

Laura dragged the unnamed worm user to the rest of her group, Layo was healing the small wounds and Ipiti was ejecting waste on the remains of a grown up worm.

"What did you do to her? Her teeth are busted" wondered Molbas.

"Nothing much, be careful, she stings people with her tongue" advised Laura before asking Layo to tie her up to something with her strands.

The group stayed a respectable distance from her until she woke up, making sure to destroy any grown worms that seemed to still be capable of moving in some way.

"Now, why did you do that?" asked Layo the moment stinger-tongue started opening her eyes.

"..." she didn't respond at all and instead looked around, trying to find a worm that could still fight to no success.

"Listen here, I am only the first of a long line of assassin sent after you!" she decided to speak, sounding very much wrong with shattered teeth.

"And who exactly wants is dead?" asked Molarine from the side.

"Who else but lord Dea?! You should have known your place and obeyed her!" she started raising her voice, as if in a panic.

Before any other questions could be asked, her tongue moved out of her mouth like a snake, stabbing herself in the forehead with the stinger attached to it.

Almost instantaneously, a human faced worm bursted out of her head, killing her on the spot, the worm itself also died as it needed its user to be alive and well.

"It would appear that Dea has become aware that we are on her track" remarked Molbas.

"We better hurry then or she might change location, she may have already done so but knowing a little bit about her, she is too proud to move" spoke Layo before the group went for their carriage and finally went away from the now, empty town.
