Chapter 14 - Chapter 13:  It Sucks Being The Bearer Of Bad News

Apartment 42, The Bowerstone Apartment Complex, 4th And Flint Street, The Attison District, Temple City (3040).....

Newly showered and fully dressed, Baddwulf stepped out of his bedroom wearing a nice and neat grey suit with dark dress shoes, a grey trench coat, a dark fedora, and a rather sloppy dark grey tie. The long sleeve undershirt had been white with red pinstripes and the collar high as he moved about still with the lingering scent of booze, which he'd been all too eager to pour himself another glass of, and cigarette smoke after lighting up a fresh one and putting it between his lips. Jake seemed to be more at ease with his finally being fully dressed and Sully was content for the time being after having been fed his favorite meal which always consisted of tuna and came in a can. He still gave Baddwulf a narrowed eye glare while licking his paws and standing on top of his usual chair, but he'd been more than happy to forgo his vengeance for a later time.

"Alright kid let's hit the streets," said Baddwulf still puffing on his cigarette which Jake detested given his research about the effect those horrible things had on the human boy.

"You know the old vids say those things cause lung damage," said Jake trailing the larger older man outside into the main corridor of his building as he locked up behind them.

"You forget that my apparent condition means my body was designed to take a beating and heal in a day," replied Baddwulf with a smirk. "I can smoke all I want, lungs will still be more healthy than you or anyone else's.

Jake rolled his eyes in annoyance. Of course, nothing ever damaged the big-headed brute for very long due to his being a Grafite, but that didn't mean secondhand smoke wasn't possible.

"Fine, you're damaging my lungs then," replied Jake as they moved down the corridor and toward the main entrance.

Baddwulf rolled his eyes this time and snuffed out the cigarette against the wall while they walked and placed the snuffed stick back into his pocket to use at a later time or when Jake had gone back to the office and left him to his own devices.

The two of them walked out into the open and Baddwulf took note of the brightness of the sun and the fact that he truly had not been out and about in two days. He was still wearing the silver wristwatch that Jake had given him despite his well-noted technophobia. He had his trusty camera in his pocket and took in the sights and sounds of Attison District.

"You're gonna need to locate our client and tell him the bad news, and of course, he has to pay us," said Baddwulf in a gruff tone.

Jake sighed realizing that they were pressed for time as they had no idea if and when the two despicable people would strike in a bid to get rid of the unfortunate client. He turned his attention to his watch and alerted his drones via the technological link to keep a lookout for the poor man whose life had taken a rather tragic turn as so many lives had when living in Temple City.

Baddwulf and Jake parted ways when they reached the office building, where Jake set to work locating the client while the detective headed toward his favorite diner for a cup of coffee and a few donuts. It was an odd routine but one he participated in every time he stepped out of his apartment building and out into the open air. With any luck, he could mull over a few things and take in the sights before he was forced to go on the prowl once the details of the case got underway. He didn't doubt for one moment that his client would be in danger and the desperation on the part of the business partner to not only keep all the profits from their mutual company but to have his girl was something in the way of a man's worst fear.

The old Detective did not doubt that his partner had been tech-savvy enough to locate their client before he found himself floating at the bottom of the New Port River, but he couldn't shake the feeling that desperation had been at an all-time high when it came to keeping the sap alive and he wasn't in the least looking forward to taking any bullets, not this early in the game.

What made what was about to go down even worse, was that he knew exactly how the poor sap felt, once upon a time as memories of a certain young redhead came creeping back as he took his lone stroll the flicker of his match against his cigarette seemed to echo amid the loneliness and the contemplation rattling about in his head.

While his casual sex romp with Amanda Smalls had been all in good fun, it was just another reminder that she had some kind of a hold on him even after all these years, he couldn't stomach the sight of her with another man, and the sickness that lead to his downward spiral in the past was all he could think about as he readied himself to go to the sap they had for a client what had been done to him in a span of a few words.

Baddwulf had been craving a drink something awful, but settled for the coffee. He made up his mind that no matter how much it would shatter the poor sap to hear the news about his lady taking up with his so-called business partner, he was going to do his utmost to give it to him straight.

A puff on his cigarette and a short stroll later, Baddwulf had reached the diner but it was strange when he placed his hand on the glass door and found that it was mostly quiet and half empty, which wasn't in the least the norm, especially around the lunch hour. A quick sniff of the air and the sensation of tension told him that there was something unsavory going on and that he might not get to enjoy his plain black coffee without much fuss after all.

Baddwulf felt his body adjust to the newly acquired tension every muscle wired to strike at the moment he detected anything coming at him and sure enough, he'd been right to do so as a lone man with fast fists came rushing at him the moment he stepped inside the establishment. The detective swiftly moved on instinct barely managing to puff on his cigarette before dodging the oncoming punches and sideswiping the would-be assailant before taking any damage.

He returned fire via his series of punches before grappling and slamming the attacker onto the ground nearly shattering one of the glass panes from the choice counter in the process. Another assailant had come from out of the shadows to defend his partner in crime only to be grabbed mid-air slammed onto the countertop and knocked out cold.

After the incident with the two would-be attackers sent by Blacky Clay, Baddwulf had not been of the mind to take liberties with his safety, not that he couldn't handle it if things got down to a hail of bullets. He had pressing business and time was of the essence or he wouldn't be getting that nifty pouch of black pennies as a result of his hard-earned efforts.

Baddwulf had a good few minutes to hightail it out of the diner, as Jake alerted him to the situation about their client. It seemed that the business partner and the no-good dame had been a tad more desperate in their attempts to sever ties with the sap, and were making good on their threat to end him once and for all.

"Shit," growled Baddwulf unsure of how much time he'd wasted playing about with low-rent thugs while his client's life was at stake.

He resolved to tap into his wolfish speed to make it to the location sent to him via Jake known as The Bowery. Once again, Baddwulf had found himself dreading being the bearer of bad news, even for the sap that didn't see it coming.
