Chereads / The Age Of The Dead / Chapter 28 - Toccata and Fugue

Chapter 28 - Toccata and Fugue

The organ comes to life and the notes are scattered throughout the church. The ground vibrates at Iñaki's feet.

"Manuel, they'll listen to us!"

"That's it!" The father raises the altar's crucifix in the direction of the organ, "Sinister like the Lord, like the Fallen Angel, like Johann Sebastian!"

The notes go in crescendo, consuming the air around Iñaki.

"Tell him to stop, he's going to attract a legion of zombies!"

"They're God's lackeys, Eduardo! They follow his orders! Food, music, and wine for the faithful!"

The man grabs a bottle at his feet and smashes it on the altar.

"Blood of God!"

"We have to get out of here!" Iñaki roars over the vibrations of the organ.

"Where to?!" shouts Manuel, chanting with the music. "God is omniscient. Daniel, send him our signal! Toccata and Fugue in D minor!"

"Let's get the food!"

No longer just vibrate the air with musical notes. Dozens of dead hands knock on the door.

"They're here, grab everything you can, and let's go!"

Iñaki bends down and empties the contents of four boxes into his backpack. There is no room for more.

"Let's go!"

The door through which they had entered opens. The five infected go into the church. Dozens of other hands crash into the main entrance. And thousands of undead at the mall wondering what that sound is.

"This is the house of the Lord!" Manuel says, pointing like a prophet to the creatures. "How dare you?! Daniel, play louder! The wrath of God will strike them down!"

Eduardo fills his backpack and follows Iñaki. An undead shows up on his way.

CRACK the knife of Iñaki buries his skull, the dead falls to the ground and another takes his place.

Iñaki leaves behind the zombie and another, another, the fourth stumbles on a bench, and the fifth tets Eduardo´s axe.

"Let's get out of here!"

"No! Here is the salvation of the pagans!"

Iñaki listens to Father Manuel's voice and laughter as he leaves the church. A laugh that confirms the day of the final judgment… at least for the two churchmen.

While Iñaki runs down the street, the music gives way to moans. The wind whistles in his ears as he runs for his life. Eduardo follows him from behind. Dozens of zombies awaken from their lethargy and head for the church. Iñaki easily dodges those along the way.

With his lungs on fire, he arrives at the door of the urbanization. Iñaki bends over his knees and waits for Eduardo. A few seconds later, Eduardo inserts the key and pulls it out.

PAM the door closes and they are back in the security of "Oasis Building." The music still sounds in Buenos Aires night.

"The...the...father Manuel...is...completely... crazy."

"Don't tell me..."

A few hours later...

- Tuna cans, cereals, chickpeas, rice, canned tomatoes...

Sitting down, Iñaki strokes Sofia's hair while Rambo smells the backpacks with interest and Eduardo inspects the supplies on the table.

"Well, if we ration it, it would have to last us about…four weeks," Víctor writes a note in his notebook and puts it away. "But we still have little water. Isn't there anything else left in the church?"

"There was food left when we escaped, but coming back is not an option."

"What was that music?"

"The delusions of a madman."

"Of two madmen," Iñaki corrects, "the end of the music must have been the end of their delusions."

"Good job," Mike congratulates them.

"Thank you," Maria adds.

"Thank you," Sofia repeats, looking at Maria.

"You're welcome."

"Well, we can conclude the mission. Tomorrow we will try to solve the water problem. Goodnight."

"Victor, can we talk now?" Iñaki asks.

"Yes, I had forgotten," he says and opens the door. "Come with me and we'll talk in my apartment."

"I'll be right back, Sofia. María?"

"You know I'm delighted."

"Thank you, until now!"

Martina's eyes follow Iñaki until he goes out with Victor through the door.

Already in Victor's apartment….

"You'll say."

"I've been talking to Martina."

Victor looks at Iñaki confused.

"She told me she's grateful for everything you did for her."

Victor wrinkles his forehead, even more confused.

"She also told me that she would like to have an apartment for herself."

Iñaki distinguishes Víctor's eyes processing the information he has just received. Little by little, the confusion turns into anger.

"How dare you?!" the lump in his throat reappears.

"Your throat... You all right?"

Again confusion assaults his face.

"My throat?"Yes I'm ok"

"You Sure?"

"Yes."

"I could examine you..."

Confusion and doubt come together in his gaze.

"It is not necessary," he concludes, settles into his seat, and resumes that characteristic coldness. "What did you talk to Martina about?"

"As I told you, she wants to go live alone."

"It doesn't make sense."

"I'm just the messenger."

Víctor puts both hands together, looks to one side, to the other, purses his lips, and looks at Iñaki once more.

"Martina stays here," he stands up. "If she wants to live alone, she can tell me herself. That's all, bye."

"What kind of relationship do you have with her?"

" She 's" Victor looks for the word in his mind "my wife."
