"What about Rambo? " asks Mike.
Iñaki looks at the dog, who looks at him with his head on one side and his ears pricked.
"We leave him here. It's very dangerous, sorry, Rambo."
"As you think is best, Iñaki."
"Yeah, it's gonna be safer that way. Let's go."
When Iñaki goes out to the interior park of the urbanization, it is already night and the rain has stopped falling.
"We have to cross the pool," Mike says, "ready?"
His words make every hair on Iñaki's body stand on end.
"No."
Mike smiles and walks over to a small trunk by the pool that he hadn't seen before. He opens it and pulls out a black inflatable boat. Iñaki's eyes light up like the moon.
"The important thing is not to leave it outside as a red carpet for "guests"."
"I don't think the infected know how to use it..."
"I wasn't thinking about them, come on."
Both get on the inflatable transport. Mike pierces the water with the oars in the quietest way. He can barely hear the movement of the boat.
After a few seconds, they reach the other end and Mike hides the boat behind some burnt tires.
"Let's keep going."
Iñaki walks to the door and Mike is about to open it when Iñaki whispers to him
"Wait…look what's next to the car."
Mike stops and looks through the door bars. A woman looks out the driver's window. The moon reflects at that point and seems to be quite a sight for the creature.
"Shhhh," Iñaki says as the pressure on the axe handle increases.
Mike nods. With a cold in his body and nerves in his stomach, he pulls the door in.
CRII...the door squeaks as it opens. The infected growls and turns her head towards the door. The infected keeps her white eyes on the door for a few seconds and then returns to her lunar spectacle.
Crouching behind the door, the infected couldn't see them.
Mike and Iñaki breathe again.
"Should I open? " whispers Mike.
"Don't open it."
"What do we do now? " asks Mike.
"Let's get her attention quietly."
"How?"
Iñaki responds by unsheathing his axe. He lifts it over his shoulders and, placing the blade horizontally, captures the moonlight and reflects it on the ground.
The infected looks at her feet where the glow has appeared. Her black saliva falls on her shoes. Iñaki moves the light, moves the infected. "Viral video," thinks as he pulls the creature towards the door.
The woman extends her hands trying to grab the light. Melancholic moans accompany each step. It's already a meter from the door.
"Mike, when I say "now" stick your hand out through the bars and smash her skull with your axe.
"Ok."
CRACK the axe descends like lightning on the skull of the zombie and the figure collapses behind the door.
"Ok."
"Here," Mike says, giving the keys to Iñaki, "sit down at the wheel while I look for the map in the glove compartment.
"Ok."
The gringo climbs into the co-driver's seat and starts looking.
"It was here...fuck."
Mike's words sound miles away. The image of the woman captures Iñaki's senses.
"Iñaki? Iñaki!"
Iñaki's mind returns to the car. He hears moans echoing in the night. They are close. Iñaki looks at Mike.
"Let's go!"
Iñaki's hands try to insert the key. The third attempt was successful.
" Come on, Iñaki!"
A few hands hit the trunk of the car.
The engine wakes up with a roar. The rearview mirror reflects death.
Iñaki puts the reverse. The car runs over the infected. The steering wheel vibrates in his hands.
Iñaki puts first and steps on the accelerator. The engine roars again. Second, corpses fall like flies behind the car. Third, the moans are confused with the engine. Fourth, he loses sight of them.
Suddenly, Iñaki stops.
"We're safe now... what are you doing?"
"I'll finish this."
