Chapter 19 - Bonds of Heart and Kingdom

The days following Arthur and Leslie's marriage were filled with warmth and joy, but the shadow of impending war loomed over the kingdom of Judep. Each moment spent with Leslie in their chambers deepened Arthur's resolve, yet he felt the weight of his responsibilities pressing heavily on his shoulders.

As he watched Leslie's laughter ringing like music through the room, he was reminded of the stakes at hand. Her gentle spirit was a beacon of hope, but the reality of the situation required him to act. He took her hands, feeling the warmth of her touch, and said, "We cannot keep this hidden any longer. Our people deserve to know what is coming."

Leslie met his gaze with understanding, her eyes glimmering with compassion. "You're right, Arthur. They will follow you because they trust you. You must tell them the truth."

As the moon hung high in the sky that night, Arthur summoned his most trusted commanders to a council meeting. The dimly lit chamber buzzed with tension as the men gathered around the grand oak table, their faces reflecting concern and determination. Arthur's heart raced as he prepared to lead them in a discussion that could alter the fate of their kingdom.

"Thank you for coming on such short notice," Arthur began, his voice steady despite the gravity of the situation. I have called you here because we must address the growing threat to our kingdom. I intend to announce to our people the evacuation to the old city. We cannot delay any longer."

Mordred, his brow furrowed in discontent, leaned forward. "But, is it wise to announce it so soon? Panic will only breed chaos. We must prepare ourselves more thoroughly before revealing the truth."

Arthur met Mordred's gaze, his own resolve unwavering. "Mordred, I understand your concerns, but our people deserve transparency. They need to know what we face. Hiding the truth will only weaken our bond with them. I will announce our intentions tomorrow morning."

The tension in the room was palpable as the commanders exchanged glances. Arthur could sense the weight of their worries, but he stood firm in his authority. "I am their king and must act in their best interest. We cannot let fear dictate our actions. We will protect our people, even if they must leave their homes."

Gawain leaned back, crossing his arms. His doubts lingered. "Very well, but we should ensure that the routes to the old city are safe and well-marked. We cannot afford any mistakes."

Arthur nodded, appreciating Gawain's pragmatism. "Agreed. I will have the guards set up posts along the routes, and we will prepare our Grand Officers to guide them."

Mordred bit his lower lip, keeping silent as his wrath towards the king grew.

After discussing logistics and strategies, Arthur concluded the meeting. "Thank you for your input. We will face this together, and I trust you all to lead our people with courage."

Arthur's mind swirled with thoughts of the day ahead as the commanders filed out of the chamber. He was about to face his people, and the burden of that responsibility felt heavier than ever.

Once alone, Arthur returned to his chambers, where Leslie awaited him. Her presence was a calming balm for his racing heart. She looked up from where she sat by the fire, her eyes filled with concern. "How did it go?"

Arthur moved to her side and took her hands in his. "It was difficult. Some are worried about the announcement, but I assured them it's necessary. Tomorrow, I will address our people."

Leslie nodded, squeezing his hand gently. "You're doing the right thing, Arthur. They must trust you, and the truth will help them prepare."

He drew her closer, resting his forehead against hers. "I wish I could keep you safe from all of this. The thought of you being in danger is unbearable."

Leslie smiled softly, brushing her fingers against his cheek. "I am strong, and so are you. We will get through this together, just as we always have."

Arthur held Leslie tightly with his decision settling over him, drawing strength from her unwavering support. At that moment, he promised himself that he would protect her and their kingdom at all costs.

As dawn broke, casting a golden hue over the land, the air was filled with anticipation. Arthur's guards moved swiftly through the streets, spreading the news and posting flyers to inform the citizens of the urgent announcement. The castle square was filled with anxious faces when the sun reached its zenith.

Standing before his people, Arthur felt the eyes of the kingdom upon him. Their trust weighed heavily on his shoulders, but he was determined to rise to the occasion. With Leslie watching from the castle balcony, he took a deep breath and stepped forward, his heart pounding.

"My people," he began, his voice strong yet tinged with sorrow. "A time of great trial is upon us. War is coming, and I stand before you not only as your king but as a man who loves this land and every one of you. I will protect you with all that I am."

A hush fell over the crowd, their faces reflecting fear and hope. Arthur's gaze softened, but he pressed on. "We have prepared for times like this. To the north lies the old city, a refuge built long ago for such moments. Listen to your city leaders and commanders—they will guide you to safety. I ask that you trust in the plans we have set, for the protection of our people is paramount."

He felt a knot in his stomach as he noticed some unhappy faces in the crowd, their expressions filled with fear and uncertainty. Though many wished to voice their protests, silence held them captive. The love they had for their king kept their dissent at bay.

"As your king, I know that leaving your home is a painful choice. But we must act swiftly for the sake of our children, our families, and our future. Our kingdom's safety depends on our unity in these trying times."

As Arthur concluded his announcement, he felt relief and trepidation. The weight of responsibility hung heavily on his shoulders, but he was determined to face the challenges ahead. He turned away from the crowd, his heart still racing from the moment's emotion, and returned to the castle.
