Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Alastair’s P.O.V

My eyes raked over the gossip column that had been on my screen for the past half hour with a mix between jealousy and indignation. Tia and Seth’s faces came into view once I scrolled down further, and a deep frown etched my face. Why were they so popular? Why were they so happy? But the question that echoed most in my head was, why had she left me for him?

“Dammit,” I cursed loudly and immediately closed the page. This was definitely not good for my health. Over the past couple of months, I’d grown more obsessed with following up on them…well more like stalking. It was pathetic to say the least.

Rubbing my chin, I felt the rough stubble that was beginning to grow. I hadn’t shaved in a few days because I was too distracted by those traitors. I hadn’t felt like myself in a long time actually, not since what they did to me. Progressively, I’d grown more impolite, impatient and most importantly, more impossible. Well, at least that’s what everybody around me kept on saying. But along the way, I’d also upgraded myself tremendously and now I was the most successful real estate mogul in the whole of California, and only at the age of 27. I wasn’t doing too badly, I resigned happily.

On the other hand, my personal life was a complete mess. I had no friends because I just simply couldn’t trust anyone that well anymore and I hadn’t had a serious relationship either in a long time. I even didn’t indulge in frivolities like one-night stands. For some, celibacy sounded like a totally foreign concept but for me, it was my way of life. I only had time to indulge in my work, my family but not myself. I was fine with that.

A knock came to my door. After saying ‘come in’, Cecilia, my PA waltzed in. Well, more like sashayed in. She was dressed in a rather tight-fitting dress that made her bust look constricted and her butt looked too damn large. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say she was trying to entice me.

“Sir, here are some documents that you need to go over and sign for your brand-new expansion in New York,” she said in her high pitched, irritating voice as she made her way towards me. She leaned down in front of my desk and set the documents in front of me, making sure to flash her breasts shamelessly in my face. My jaw ticked in indignation.

“You’re fired Cecilia. Get your stuff and get out of my building!” I growled at her, and she did a double take, her eyes widening in shock.

“W-what? B-but what d-did I do?” she stuttered, her eyes slowing brimming with unshed tears.

I scoffed and then faced her with my face stoic. “You have been wearing these revealing clothes and whenever you’re in my presence, you act like a harlot. I want you gone in the next twenty minutes. Stop by HR and get your last pay-check,” I sliced icily and she flinched at my cold tone. Nodding rapidly, she ran out of my office, almost tripping in her haste. She shut my door with a loud bang and then I sighed, rubbing by forehead in aggravation.

Why couldn’t these so-called personal assistants just be professional for once? Did I honestly have to suffer for my good looks like I had chosen them? I diverted my attention to my landline and dialled my secretary’s number. He picked up a second later. “Yes sir?”

“Put an ad out there that I’m in the market for a new assistant,” with that, I cut the call and tried to resume my work. My brain was so fizzled up with many thoughts that I barely got any work done that day. Around 4 pm, someone burst through my door and I groaned in aggravation.

“What do you want, Kait?” I asked in exasperation. Kaitlyn ignored my words and took a seat in front of me.

She tsked whilst regarding me with her calculative grey eyes which resembled mine so much. “Another P.A fired. Why do you do this little brother?” she asked in disappointment.

I rolled my eyes. “I see that gossip travels fast around these streets. She was flirting with me and you know I don’t mix business with pleasure,” I added gruffly, continuing going over my paperwork.

She laughed. “You sound like a monk. Anyways, I know that’s not the only reason why you’re being a grouch. You saw the tabloids. Tia and Seth are making headlines with their love affair. They honestly look so good together,” she trailed off and I shot her a hard glare.

“Don’t you dare say their names in my presence,” I grumbled lowly, feeling a constriction in my chest at the mention of their names, well her name in particular.

She threw her hands up in annoyance. “Why won’t you just move on already! It’s been 4 years, Alastair. She was never worth your time. You are too good for her. But now look at you, still pining over her after all this time? Many women would die to be by your side but you just turn them all down!” she yelled at me and I shrank back in my leather swivel chair. Her face morphed into one of pity. “I’m sorry Ala-“

“You don’t get it, Kait. She cheated on me with my best friend and even dumped me for him. How do you think that made me feel? What it did to my pride and self-respect? You’ll never understand it and I don’t expect you to. Little miss perfect with everybody wrapped around her little finger. Mom and dad’s favourite. You don’t know what it feels like to be disregarded by everyone…” I yelled back at first but then the last words came out in a whisper.

She frowned at my outburst. “I never knew you felt that way,” she echoed out loud, but more to herself.

I laughed mirthlessly. “How could you? You’re too neck deep in your self-righteousness to notice. If you have nothing crucial to say, I suggest you leave my office so I can get back to my work,” I said rudely. She nodded her head, jaw clenched and then marched out of my office, making sure to bang the door.

The poor door. What did it ever do to these people?
