Chapter 21 - Chapter 20

Guys!" She exclaimed and ran towards a group of girls.

She pulled me into a nice-looking dinner. I felt out of place with my raggedy clothes while everyone was dressed so nicely.

The girls at the dinner table all got up and greeted each other. One of the girls saw me and gasped.

"Guy! Guy! It's him! It's the singer!" She yelled

I froze when she noticed me but relaxed when she said, singer.

*I thought she knew I was the king! I don't know if I should be offended that no one recognizes me by now. I wasn't that bad, was I?*

"Yeah! I told you he would be hanging around his usual spot." She said proudly

"Yeah. Yeah." One of the girls rolled her eyes and looked at me. "My name's Lavigne, and the one who dragged you here is Helda. And the girls over here are Azul and Rose. They're twins, but not really." Lavigne said

That kind of makes sense. The twins had identical facial features but different styles, so they looked like complete opposites. Where one wore white the other wore black. Where one was short, the other was tall. And so on.

"Come on. Let's eat first!" Rose said and returned to the table.

"I think we should tell him what song he should sing first. Leave the feast for later," Azul said

"I vote we eat!" Helda said

*I second!*

We sat to eat, but the twins argued on the side.

When we ordered, I chose the least expensive foods they had. I guess Lavigne noticed and ordered more for me to try out. I ended up eating almost half of what was on the menu.

As we ate, the girls talked and gossiped. They spoke about things like their favorite books to political topics.

"Have you heard about the tax thing? I can't believe it! We came here to get away from all that bullshit." Azul said, and for the first time since I've met them, Rose agreed.

"I heard that it's because they're getting ready for some kind of war against the Falling Sky Kingdom," Helda said

"That would make sense since they are raising the pay for the soldiers," Lavigne said

Rose shivered. "If I knew this kingdom was on the brink of war, we wouldn't have moved here."

Azul agreed with her.

"You girls are new here?" I asked them

Azul nodded. "Rose and I came here from the other region. We heard that life was easier here, especially since there was a new queen who was praised by everyone." She rolled her eyes.

"Apparently, she's better than the last king, who died a mysterious death. I somehow don't believe it." Rose said

"Don't. I don't know who spread that rumor, but I'd rather have a murderous king who thought about his kingdom instead of a dumbass queen with a god complex." Lavigne said

"Agreed. The king wasn't here much, so I never even got a good look at him, but whenever he walked through, I always felt strangely safe. If that makes any sense." Helda laughed.

When she looked back at me, she had an odd face before saying, "I've been meaning to ask you, are you new here? You kind of just came out of nowhere singing your heart out."

"I am new here. Yes." I said

*Technically, it's a lie, yes. But not, in some ways.*

"Weird. I feel like I've met you before," she said

"I feel the same. I thought it was just me." Lavigne said

"Perhaps we knew each other in another life?" I suggested

Lavigne laughed. "Perhaps"

Trying to steer the topic away from me I asked, "What song did you want me to sing?"

"Do you know any love songs?" Helda asked

"I do. Is that your recommendation?" I asked

"Yep. I heard the song about two star-crossed lovers, and I fell in love with it. I've wanted to hear it again since then." She said

I nodded.

We went out to the tree, where the girls helped me hang the lights I bought. When we finished, the girls sat in front of me and got ready to listen. A few people who recognized me gathered around as well.

I sang my version of the Two Lovers because I didn't like the original one very much.

The two lovers were to die for each other, but I changed the story so they lived for each other instead.

They were supposed to die together at each other's hands, but instead, they decided to go separate ways and live their own lives. They would find one another when they were both older and mature.

When I finished my song, I saw many teary eyes, but they still applauded and wanted an encore.

It made me happy enough to do a couple more songs.

It was late, and people went to their own homes.

The girls thanked me and made me promise to hang out with them again.

I went back to my own room in the motel. It was a good day. I got to eat well and made some extra coins.

After starting one of the books I bought, I went to sleep with a smile.
