Chereads / The Abandoned Elivette Hirsch / Chapter 9 - The Numens' Death

Chapter 9 - The Numens' Death

The Phassis Kingdom is flourishing simply because it has a huge number of Numen to protect and bless the land.

Numens are the key to a prosperous land. They are treated as sacred as they were considered as God's right hand.

However, Numen from birth are assigned in places. Since a Numen's power derives from their birth region in the first place, a nation cannot employ a Numen from another nation to guard and bless its territory.

Aside from that, what I've read from the book is the history of Phassis Kingdom, which was led by a Numen couple.

Numen couple are the rarest as Numens are known to not have partners, and whose sole purpose in life is to guard and bless the given piece of land. Once a Numen copulates with a normal human, this will take the Numen's power. However, Numen Couple can assist and strengthen one another. They are essentially viewed as soulmates who were meant to be together. But two Numens can only be a couple if they are compatible with each other and has the blessing of the God.

And until then, there were no Numen Couple recorded in history.

Numen only knows their identity once they reach the age of 8. They get a calling about their identity which will tell them about their selves and after that the government under the King will take the child and educate it accordingly.

The family who raised the child before reaching the age of 8 are given gifts such as lands, money or even a title.

Because most Numen prior came from the Hirsch family, Elivette's grand grandfather, the Marquess of Carran, rose through the ranks from Baron to Marquess. Therefore, everyone held the Hirsch family in the highest regard. However, because no Numen from the Hirsch family have appeared in the last century, their influence and power have significantly decreased.

Despite that it was still rumored that the Hirsch Family has Numen blood, and they just need to awaken it because they inherited the red eyes that only Ancestor Numen's have. The Numens now doesn't have red eyes because their power isn't as pure as their ancestor.

This is also one of the reasons why Elivette was very proud and arrogant, she believed she's better than anyone because of this 'Numen' blood running in her veins.

It wasn't really stated what exactly Numens do, because it only mentioned in the novel that they protect and bless the land. Aside from that they also get to sense from time to time regarding big events to prepare humanity.

Those were the only information written in the story because the Numens weren't really a big part in Celaestis' story.

They were only mentioned to explain the fantasy setting of the world.

"People have been discovering new creatures every now and then, and they all appear to be vicious... They are now connecting it to the first death of the Numen because it is still a mystery of how she died."

I nodded at what he said.

It seems like it though.

"It seems that you didn't know about this Madam. The government has been sending information about them to warn everyone especially now that the Numen's protection is weaker than before."

I scratched my head with what he said.

Of course I wouldn't know about it because I don't belong here. I don't have any memory from Elivette about this warning either.

I doubt the real Elivette would know about it because that girl only focuses on herself.

I suddenly remembered something.

"The price for the grains and crops, I was told that it is now costly. Is this perhaps connected to the Numens' death?"

"Apparently yes, it has affected the crop growth in lands because of the Numen's death. But I'm not sure if it is because the Numen aren't capable of blessing the land as it was before, since there's a rumor going around that this might be happening as a punishment from God, for hurting the Numens."

I nodded at what he said. With all of this happening, this might affect the economy of the Empire. I wonder what Celaestis will do about this especially since she's about to be crowned as a Queen Consort in a few months.

"It's best that you sleep now Madam. The Aulops cry will worsen if they feel someone's paying attention to them."

I closed my eyes, however it only made it worse because I'm more sensitive to my hearing.

I can still hear their cries.

"Miss, please help us..." I felt my skin crawl when I heard a little girl's voice.

It sounded like Olivia.

"Madam please don't pay attention to it, I think their cries are getting worse now. If there are too many Aulops here, I doubt the protection could hold it."

I felt the carriage run faster and I opened my eyes.

"I'm trying. How far are we from the next town?" I'm getting restless and I think it's because of these goddamn Aulops.

"Another 3 hours we'll reach the next town."

I nodded and held to Penny who was still sleeping. I started to relax when I felt Penny's warm. I tried to think of other things to calm myself and it didn't last long before I felt my eyes getting droopy and everything turned black.
