Sitting here in front of these men, with my face fuming red, and all my confidence crushed, depresses me to the extreme. Just learning that I'm not even a student has crushed me to all points of existence. But Headmaster Griffin isn't finished and neither is Professor Henderson.
"Now, I will inform you on prohibited behaviors. Leaving your room at night is forbidden. Going into the east forest where the tower of sorrow lies is also forbidden at all times." Professor Henderson says. My eyes grow wide and I look at his eyes to see if he is serious.
"The Tower of Sorrows?! The one from the fairytale, about the dragon of time and the first king?!" I almost squeal these words at the top of my lungs. I can barely believe what I am hearing. "Fairytale huh..." He pauses before giving the Headmaster a look. As if to explain further.
"Freya, it is no fairytale. It is history. It does end up getting passed on as a fairytale in some areas, true enough." Professor Henderson steps forward and closer to me. "The Headmaster is one of the 3 mages who have been decreed to guard the tower. Though, it'll be my turn to guard it next year, since Headmaster Griffin is retiring. But that is a story for another time." My mouth hangs open from my uncontrollable surprise. This cannot be happening. All my sadness from a few moments ago disappears. He makes it seem like it's no big deal, and like everyone knows this piece of information.
"But to continue on," the Professor says. "Dark magic is forbidden as is the research and learning of it. Although this is the law of the entire kingdom so I'm sure I do not have to explain it to you. As it is decreed by the King who lives in the Gervorshe castle here on campus." It's true he doesn't need to explain. One of the men in my hometown used dark magic. He used his magic to steal from almost everyone, including me. He robbed us of our money, so none of us could pay for our resources. But luckily he was found 2 weeks later, after trying to rob a local church in a town to the west, and was locked away for good. Learning about magic with my parents, they taught me to stay away from dark magic, but in their day it was known as black magic. I guess it's the same thing. I'm glad my parents taught me, so I can never use it.
"Let us end this with a question. What is magic to you?" The Headmaster cuts in. I have never been asked this before. What is magic to me? I stay silent for a while, showing that I can't seem to come up with anything. "No answer then?" I stoop my head down low and shake my head. "I'm sorry," I say in a tiny whisper. The Headmaster walks up to me this time, but it seems he had to walk a bit, since I backed away so far from them without realizing it.
"Well, it's quite alright. You still have a long road ahead of you. Take your time thinking about this question. You'll find out what magic is to you." Kyle helps me off the ground and helps me compose myself. "What about the other rules?" I say. Professor Henderson explains that what we talked about were the rules. Dumb me. With these final words, they both wish me well, and see me out of the room. Standing in the hallway, away from them, I let out a huge sigh. I can feel the muscles in my body relax, but then ache again. I must've been really tense in there for my body to feel this sore all of a sudden. I can't help but roll my neck around to try and loosen it up.
"I am surprised that you didn't notice the 'provisional' in your letter." Kyle's words make a lump form in my throat. I wasn't planning on getting a lecture from him as well... "Well, you'd best do everything you can to make sure you make things go your way in the end. Though the road ahead looks rather dire." The expression in his words makes my blood boil again, and I can't help but want to let off a little steam at him.
"What do you mean by that?" My voice is slightly raised, and definitely louder than I expect it to sound. He folds his arms across his chest and practically looks down on me. "I mean exactly what I said, novice. But do your best. Now I must be returning to work. Go ahead and head onto your classroom. I've left to deal with you in class with Edward." Huh? Who's Edward? I look at him with puzzlement. He clears his throat after he sees that I'm muddled.
"He's my younger brother. Edward Jacobson. He resembles me, so you should be able to recognize him easily. Ask him what you need to do." With that, Kyle leaves me there in the hallway. I wonder what kind of guy this Edward is and if he's anything like his older brother. With that I walk back down the hallway towards my class room. I checked with 24A and found that it isn't my classroom. So that leaves 24B. Standing in front of the door is nerve racking. My palms become clammy and my heart skips. This is where I make my first impression with everyone in my class, and make some friends at least while I'm here.
That's right. While I'm here. I can't believe I didn't notice the provisional word in my letter. 13 days of a trial. I can't learn and practice magic well enough to impress people. I can barely do my healing magic as it is. But maybe that'll be enough to show off, and get an official acceptance letter. With a big smile, I opened the door to my classroom.
The room is filled with students chatting happily and pleasantly. Everyone seems so engrossed in their conversation, that they pay no attention to me as I walk in late to class, and obviously stick out like a sore thumb. I guess I should take a seat. I look around for a seat nearby, hoping to keep myself as invisible as possible. "You must be the new student." A higher toned voice, but also sounding stern, comes from behind me as I stand in the middle of the classroom. "Freya Bell?" I turn around to see someone who looks exactly like Kyle in front of me. With his high and tight hair cut, but no bangs. And the same lavender eyes.
"Oh you're Edward!" I say with a more gleeful voice. At least someone I know my name. It's like looking at Kyle, but maybe 1-2 years younger. That's right, I didn't even ask what year Kyle was, let alone even ask Jin what year she is. Maybe I'm already making a ton of friends with different years than my own. "Your brother told me to talk to you to find out what I need to know." I say weakly. He holds out his hand for a handshake. Better manners already than his brother.
"Yes, and we're in the same class together. Great to meet you." A girl with green hair pushes through and wraps her arm around Edward's neck. Her eyes are as green as her hair, which is so long, it almost touches the ground.
"Freya, this is Lisa, my girlfriend. Lisa, this is Freya, the newest student." Edward lets out the smallest smile when looking at Lisa. She sure is impressive, especially being his girlfriend. I do have to say though that her good looks make me feel insecure. "Oh trust me, I know her name. Don't forget I have an information network." Lisa holds out her hand and smiles at me. "It's so nice to meet you Freya." I nod at her and shake hands. "Likewise."
Just then a boy with an eye patch walks over in our direction. His hair is navy blue, with highlights of white in it. From the one eye I can see, its color is a gentle brown with a hint of green around the pupil. And to be even more surprising, there is a wolf by his feet. Wait a wolf?!? No one else seems affected by the fact that there is a rather large gray wolf in the classroom
