Chapter 6 - 6: Once In A Lifetime Opportunity

To change the depressing atmosphere both of them created. The man then showed a delighted smile knowing that he could help Iris with her problem. "Oh is that so? You should have told me sooner. I have food here. Have some. It is at least what I could do for you as a thank you for saving my life." He said as he took off the big camping bag from his back, whipping up some fruits and water from it.

Upon seeing that, Iris couldn't help but stare at the fruits laid out before her. Her eyes were shining as she could feel herself drooling.Earlier, Iris was cursing seeing that there were no fruits that could be seen in the forest. What kind of forest would this be without any tree that could produce at least something edible? She remembered asking herself earlier.

"Saving your life is an overstatement, but I won't decline with that offer!" She immediately accepted the offer as she grabbed an apple and shoved it in her mouth without any second thought.

Iris knew that taking food offered by a stranger is not a good idea. But she was too hungry to care.

….

"So you came into this world after falling in that shallow lake?"

The man asked Iris, just to be sure. With his arms crossed, he then put a finger on his chin as if he was thinking hard.

"Uhuh. Crazy right? I understand if you won't believe me. I mean, I wouldn't too." Iris responded, reassuring the man before her after she took a big gulp of water from the water container given to her by the man.

As the night entered, Iris decided to camp out outside. Oddly, she found comfort and reassurance being with this stanger. Just talking with him could make Iris instantly see that he doesn't have any bad intentions with her. That was why she decided to tell her story of how she came into this world. Hoping she could get some information about this new world.

"I believe you. Being in this world full of monsters and mythical creatures. I wouldn't be so surprised if there are other worlders roaming here too." The man said calmly as he stared at the bonfire in between them. He then kept quiet for a few seconds as his face suddenly became serious. On the other hand, Iris was still eating like a gluttonous person.

With the fire lighting up the man's face. Iris could clearly see his face under those big hoods. Deep eyebags could be seen on his face as he did so. With that, Iris could finally see his face up close. Now looking closely at him, he was not bad looking. Actually he looked really handsome. He just looked tired and hadn't slept for days. Is he a wanderer? He couldn't be a mercenary seeing as he has no weapon.

"I have a question for you, kind stranger. This is a one of a lifetime offer. And I need you to answer honestly."

With his attention on the bonfire, the man asked Iris with a serious tone of voice with a mystified look on his face as he used a twig to move some coal in the pit. Upon hearing his words, Iris felt a bit interested but also hesitant as she turned to look at the wanderer.

"Uhm, sure." Iris responded, unsure what his question would be as she laid out big leaves on the ground for her to lay down.

Hearing that, the wanderer raised a question while staring at the bright orange fire, crackling before him.

"Would you like to do what you plan to do here in your second life?" He asked with a soft tone of voice as his face became relaxed upon gazing at the beautiful bonfire.

Upon hearing that particular question, Iris finally sat down on the laid leaves as she crossed her legs. "Plan huh? I never asked myself about that after I came here."

She uttered to herself, not knowing that she said it out loud. The wanderer remained quiet as he gave her a few minutes to sort her mind.

After a while of silence, Iris smiled as if she recalled something funny as she planted her hands behind, using it as a support as she slightly leaned back. Gazing at the serene night sky.

"There is only one thing I want to do. And that is to be able to freely do what I want. I want to be free. I don't want any drama and other tiresome things. I don't want to be part of any problematic family problems. I just want to live by myself."

She answered with a hopeful tone of voice still gaping up the thousands stars above her. Her eyes were shining as the stars illuminated on it. Being in this fantasy world is amazing. Even how the night sky looks amazing in this world. Nothing like the original she lived in.

After processing what she just said to the man, it looked like she became a bit embarrassed as she became melancholic. She then heaved a sigh while closing her eyes as she put her head back down.

"Now if someone out there did give me a chance to have this second life after I give up. Then I guess I should live to my fullest, don't you think so?" Iris continued with her voice starting to get livelier than earlier as she glanced at the wanderer who was listening to her ramble.

Under the big hood that covered most of his upper part face, a smirk could be seen tugging on the corner of the man's lips.

A loud clap then resonated in the area as the man put his hands together which made Iris startled, immediately taking her attention upon doing so.

"I see. That's simple then! Why don't you take over my job then?" He asked once again but this time, in an excited tone of voice as he turned his body facing Iris.

Hearing those statements, Iris couldn't help but be confused. She furrowed her brows together with her mouth slightly agape. But instead of answering, Iris returned his question with a series of other questions. "Wait, what? Take over your job? What do you mean?" Iris asked, clearly perplexed with everything.

"It's very easy, you know. You just have to look after a couple of people and make sure they are safe."

'Like a guard? Then, is he working as a guard? I thought he was just a wandering person...'Iris thought to herself as he examined the man's overalls. He has good proportions and physique. It looked like he was a better fighter than a guard. But then Iris guessed it was just the same job. The man then talked more about his hometown which is just a day and a half away. It could be a place for her to start.

"So? Do you want it? I'm sure you will be great at it." The man asked once again, urging Iris to take her offer.

It's not a bad offer if you think about it. Iris is currently on a run from her supposed father who planned to marry her to someone as part of his business negotiation. Or from what he deduced after what the nobleman said. And according to him, no nobles would want to go and make a mess in that town for it is protected by someone very powerful even the imperial family can't touch them.

"Are you serious?"

After talking for a while, the fire started to get smaller and both of them didn't care to refuel. Iris covered herself with a blanket given to him by the man as the breeze became colder.

Hearing that, the man smiled warmly to reassure her. "Just see for yourself. You have nowhere to go right? My friends will definitely accommodate you." He responded confidently, with his elbow planted on his crossed legs, he then rested his chin on top of his palm. Staring at Iris with a mysterious gaze and unexplainable look on his face.

"I can tell that you're a good person, Iris. I can see it." He continued as he smiled widely afterward.

The small fire that lit half of his face accentuated his mature features even more. At that moment, something urged Iris to take his suggestion. There's just something about this person that made Iris feel that he is a trustworthy person. For some odd reason.
