Chapter 22 - Anvar - Uzbekistan

In other parts of the world to be exact, Uzbekistan, Basta and Ega have just passed Orion. They seemed to be in a very quiet university. Indeed, from the information they got, there were no teaching and learning activities here. Ega caught the figure of Anvar sitting around a small fountain in the middle of a garden. Some students are seen walking around the university. Basta sat on the right and Ega sat on the left of Anvar. The man seemed very surprised by the presence of the two. Again they have to act a bit.

"Ah, it's a pretty cool day, isn't it?" Basta said.

"Oh, that's right," Ega sipped his drink.

"Would you like a drink too?" Basta offered to Anvar who looked confused and shook his head.

"Just accept it then. You don't have to drink it here," offer Basta then.

"How old are you?" Ega asked casually.

"I'm 22 yeas old now. I'm a final year engineering student. Actually, I'm just a step away from graduating from this campus," Anvar opens the story.

"Then what happened? Why are you here?" ask Ega again.

"I-I actually almost graduated, but apparently this pandemic hit faster than I thought. I'm now confused about how to continue my final project," says Anvar.

"Confused because? Ah sorry I seem to ask a lot of questions," Basta again.

"Ah, it's okay. It seems I really need a friend to talk to. This campus has postponed all student interests indefinitely. I can't really blame it because so many staff and even lecturers have fallen victim to the virus. But on the other hand, I had to graduate this year because my parents couldn't afford the fees anymore. My scholarship was suddenly revoked for the same reason. I can't make it harder for my parents," said Anvar again subconsciously opening Urgos and drinking it. The wine-flavored drink instantly relieved him.

"I really understand. Honestly, this pandemic has made it difficult for many parties. But I agree that this pandemic encourages us to think more creatively and critically. I hope you can find a solution soon with the lecturers here," say Basta again.

"We are not allowed to see each other. Even now my supervisor is in the hospital. What can I do?" Anvar felt he had hit a dead end.

"Give some time for your lecturer to be healthy. Then you can discuss it together. I don't know if I think technology is getting more sophisticated and you can do some virtual meetings," say Basta again.

"Yeah, that's good advice. You're an engineering student right? I think you can innovate with the knowledge you have," say Ega again.

"Yeah I'll think about it," Anvar's words still looked sluggish making Basta and Ega glance at each other.

"What do you really want to do?" Basta asked.

"I want to apply for a job as an engineer in an automotive company, but one of the conditions is that I must have taken the thesis exam, while you can see for yourself that I have not been able to take the exam while the test will start next week. I'm afraid they will immediately reject me from the administrative stage. I really want to get to work immediately to help my parents who are just Samsa traders on the roadside," said Anvar finally.

"I see. I understand. So I only have one suggestion. Keep applying and leave the rest to the Almighty," said Basta finally understood that the thesis was not Anvar's main problem.

"Yes, I also agree with that. Destiny has indeed been created for all humans but rest assured we must strive for everything so that we can have the ending we want," say Ega again.

"Even if you get turned down at one company, you'll still have dozens of other companies to aim for. Just don't give up," said Basta finally.

"Yeah fine. I'll still try to propose. Thanks a lot for the drink," said Anvar finally feeling much more relieved to have expressed his heart.

"Ah about your parents, where do they sell Samsa? We really want to taste it," said Basta who really likes to eat it.

"Ah, do you want to try it? It's not that far actually. Only one ride on the tram from the front of this campus can we arrive at an intersection close to where my parents are selling. Do you really want to go?" ask Anvar.

"Get on the tram and taste Samsa? Of course we want to go," he said with a gentle smile.

They walked together through beautiful Samarkand although again unfortunately it looked much quieter. It seems that many local residents are choosing to stay indoors to stay safe and healthy. This kind of pandemic is not the first time this has happened in the world, previously in 2020 the world had experienced another pandemic due to Covid. Because of that experience, this time the world seems more prepared to face almost the same thing even though the horror will still be there.

Basta and Ega are also happy that they haven't come to Uzbekistan in a long time. The city plan, which is thick with Middle Eastern-style buildings, looks majestic and beautiful at the same time.

"So who are you guys really?" ask Anvar.

"Ah yes, we forgot to introduce ourselves. I'm Basta and this is my colleague Ega. We're just newcomers who happen to work in a magic shop in another city," Basta said.

"Then why suddenly appeared on campus earlier?" ask Anvar.

"Ah of course taking a walk. We got a little lost actually earlier. Hehehe," Ega laughed awkwardly.

"Ah I see. We'll go down after this," says Anvar.

They got off and still had to walk about 300 meters to a street that at first seemed busy considering the number of stalls that were closed. Only a few are open including the Samsa seller who is Anvar's father and mother.

"Umi Abi, I brought friends. They want to eat your Samsa," said Anvar looking happy.

They smiled and immediately fried Samsa for both which is a bun filled with beef or lamb that was seasoned. While they were still busy waiting, Anvar showed them his cellphone screen.

"They invited me for an interview," Anvar shouted with joy showing their phone to his parents too.

"Suddenly? When were you?" Basta was surprised.

"Earlier when we were on the tram, I emailed them and unexpectedly they responded quickly. Ah, even though I know there is still a long way to go, but I thank you guys for helping me muster up the courage," say Anvar again.

"It's all in you, Anvar." Coinciding with Abi Anvar who came with two portions of Samsa.

"Wow, this is delicious," Ega said.

"Wow." Basta's comments that can only show a satisfied face and thumbs up.

They issue some som bills to pay but Anvar refuses.

"Here's a thank you for today," close Anvar.
