"How long is this party gonna take?" Alexis asked Dianne as they both walked down the hallway in the dorm.
She had convinced herself that going to a party on her first day in college wasn't such a terrible thing to do, even though her mum had warned her about parties.
The party was going to be in the compound and 'Dianne seems like good person' she had told herself as she changed out of her night gown.
She wore a pair of black jean trousers and a white and pink checker patterned shirt. She knew it was kind of casual for the party but she wore it anyway.
"It's probably gonna go on till around 11pm or midnight" Dianne replied
"What?" Alexis questioned sharply turning to face Dianne.
'midnight!?'
It was at this point Alexis realized how dumb it was that she was going to a party with someone she met about an hour ago. Might have not been such a good idea.
"don't worry, we can leave whenever you want to." Dianne told her "and I know you might be thinking it's not a very good idea to attend a party on your first day but it's going to be fine." She assured "and it's going to give us some time to get to know each other " she added
"Speaking of getting to know each other..." Alexis began "your accent," she continued
"Yeah what about it?" Dianne asked turning to her
"You're not from around here are you?" Alexis asked. She had been so curious to know.
"Of course not" Dianne replied "I'm from Nigeria. Born and raised" she added proudly
"Whoa" Alexis' eyes widened "Nigeria?" She questioned
"Yeah" Dianne replied pausing to completely face Alexis "anything wrong with that?" She asked raising an eyebrow.
"No, no" Alexis smiled nervously. "It's just, I've never actually met anyone from there"she added
"You're gonna meet a few here" Dianne said turning away from Alexis, continuing out of the dorm. "Or maybe not, black people don't get to do a lot here. It's crazy how rampant racism is here in Bevard" she added
"Wow, I guess this school isn't as perfect as they say it is" Alexis said looking down at her sneakers
"Perfect?" Dianne questioned and she scoffed "you're in the wrong place if you're looking for perfection" she continued "I mean, educationally maybe but aside that, a lot of shit go down here that you can't even imagine" she added
"Wow" Alexis muttered. Her brother had told her that but she didn't believe him. "Hold on, then how come Candace is your cousin?, she's white"
"Yeah, she's from my mother's side. My mum is white" Dianne replied
That was when they stepped out of the dorm and into the compound.
There were so many people outside chatting and dancing to music coming from God knows where.
There was light everywhere so you could see everything going on.
The party was actually right outside the dorm, not what Alexis was expecting.
She just looked around kind of amazed.
'I really hope Noah isn't here' she thought. He would freak out seeing her at a party on her first day.
"Come on, there's someone I want you to meet" Dianne said interrupting her thoughts. She grabbed her by her wrist and together, they pushed through the crowd. They walked for about two minutes and then Dianne stopped at a tree. There was a table filled with different drinks a lot Alexis hadn't seen before then and stacks of red plastic cups.
"Took you long enough" the guy by the table said walking towards she and Dianne.
He was black too but his skin was lighter than Dianne's. He was tall and he had full dreadlocks. He wore a pair of black pants and a black round necked shirt with a pair of black sneakers. He looked kinda tipsy.
"Yeah I'm happy to see you too Amarr" Dianne replied with a little bit of sarcasm
"Really?" The guy questioned with a laugh. Alexis could tell by his accent that he wasn't Nigerian like Dianne, he was American. "Hi" he said turning to face Alexis with a smile.
"Hi" Alexis replied feeling a bit awkward
"Oh yeah, Amarr this is Candace's new roommate, Lex" Dianne introduced her.
"It's short for Alexis" She said
"Nice to meet you Lex" Amarr smiled again.
"Don't let the smile fool you Lex, he's a dickhead" Dianne told her
"Ok, ouch" Amarr said turning back to face the drink table. He grabbed an open bottle and two cups.
He handed a cup to Alexis and the other one to Dianne but Dianne just gave the cup back to him and took the bottle.
"Seriously?" Amarr questioned as Dianne poured in a portion of the content of the bottle.
"Yeah" she replied nodding
She then turned to Alexis and poured her some wine too.
"What's this?" Alexis questioned looking into the red cup.
"Whiskey" Amarr replied. His deep voice echoed in Alexis' head. She felt like she was going to melt.
"Ok, I'll give you guys some time to get to know each other" Dianne said as she walked away.
Alexis stared at her as she left and soon she disappeared into the crowd.
'did she just leave?' she asked herself
"I hope you know your way back" Amarr began, taking a sip of his whiskey "cuz you'll never see her again" he added leaning on the drink table.
He seemed to know her pretty well.
"I know my way back" Alexis replied in a low tone.
She felt awkward around strangers.
She just turned away from him and began to look around at everyone in the party. Nobody was really dancing, people just hung around chatting and drinking.
As Alexis gazed around, something caught her attention, just at the corner of her eye.
She turned her head and that was when she saw him.
He wore a pair of blue jean trousers and a red hoodie over it with a pair of white sneakers. His shiny black hair fell a little below his eyebrows almost completely hiding his bright green eyes. She watched his pink lips move as he talked to his group of friends and she just couldn't look away.
He was so dreamy, everything she could ever want. He was so perfect it was almost impossible.
'how could he look that good' she thought
She was literally a mindless simp and she knew that. She discovered it in highschool
She was so lost in thoughts she didn't notice one of his friends staring at her.
The friend tapped him to call his attention to Alexis who was almost drooling and as soon as his eyes met hers, she snapped out of her thoughts.
She hastily turned away in instant regret and shame "shit" she cursed under her breath. "You're are so stupid Alexis" she muttered to herself.
"You like him?" She heard Amarr ask.
Like things couldn't get worse.
"What?" She questioned raising her head to face him "no" she added laughing nervously
"It's totally fine if you do, I can introduce you to him" He said
"I don't" she replied frankly.
"It's cool, I was just kidding anyway I don't know him personally" he began taking a sip of his whiskey.
It was then she noticed his jawline...
'damn' she thought. 'why does everybody look so good?' she asked herself.
Yeah, she was one of those girls.
"So how did you get to know Dianne?" She asked him
"We were roommates last year" he replied staring straight at her
"They actually allow that?" Alexis questioned, shock and curiosity written all over her face.
"No,it's usually a mix up" Amarr replied "but Dianne seemed cool with it so instead of complaining to the school we stayed roommates and it was good for her cuz I was a sophomore so I helped her find her way around school" he added taking another sip of his whiskey
"So that's when you started dating?" Alexis questioned with a straight face.
"What?" Amarr questioned choking a bit. "What did you say?" He added
"Was that when both of you started dating?" Alexis bluntly repeated herself.
"Uh... No" Amarr replied hesitantly "that wasn't...uh" he continued "did Dianne tell you that?" He asked "that we're dating?" He added looking kinda uncomfortable
"No" Alexis replied "I actually just assumed you were" she added
"Oh" he began with a smile. He looked relieved "Dianne is not my girlfriend" he told her.
"Wow, I'm sorry" she laughed. She felt so stupid.
"Well, what about..." Amarr began
"Hey Lex, come and watch me arm wrestle" Dianne said barging into the conversation.
She looked excited.
"Where?" Alexis questioned
Dianne didn't bother replying, she just grabbed Alexis by her wrist and began to drag her through the crowd. Amarr followed behind them.
'hm, a bit obnoxious' Alexis thought as she ran behind Dianne
They finally got to a spot where people gathered in a circle around 'someone or something' Alexis wasn't so sure at first. Dianne found a way to push through the crowd and they eventually got to the middle where there was a table . Two guys sat at the table both struggling to win the battle.
Arm wrestling...
The crowd patiently watched the two guys.
A sheen of sweat covered both their faces as they struggled.
Dianne anxiously stared at them firmly gripping her bottle of whiskey, she obviously wanted to try so she needed one of the guys to loose, as soon as possible. She didn't look patient.
"Come on Fred, jack him up!" Someone yelled from the crowd and one of the guys smirked in response.
'they tryna kill your self esteem bro' Alexis thought looking at the other guy...
She was beginning to get into the game.
Fred stared directly into the other guy's eyes and his lips slowly formed into a smirk. He was trying to psyche out the other guy.
"It's over now buddy" he muttered in such a low tone it was almost a whisper
Alexis felt like she was the only one who heard it.
Almost immediately, Fred pushed down the other guy's hand and it hit the table with a loud knock.
The crowd cheered like they already knew the other guy had no chance of winning. He just stood up and walked away pushing through the crowd.
"Who else wants a piece of me!?" Fred yelled out with pride.
Then Alexis saw Dianne walk forward. She didn't stop until she stood right in front Fred staring directly into his soul.
"I do" she said in the bitchiest tone Alexis ever heard.
"Yh, sorry, it's for indigenes only" Fred began and he slipped his hands into his pockets. He looked Dianne directly in the eyes and gave a short laugh "get your Nigerian ass out here"
There were gasps everywhere.
'how could he say that to her!?' Alexis thought as her eyes widened.
Then everywhere went dead silent as everyone's eyes were set on Dianne awaiting her response.
She just smiled. The smile developed into her snicker as she raised her bottle of whiskey to her mouth.
"Yeah, he's dead" Alexis heard Amarr say behind her. He had been there the entire time.
Dianne chugged her entire bottle of whiskey as Fred watched her in confusion.
"I really thought she would snap" Alexis said to Amarr
"Wait for it" he replied looking straight at Dianne.
Dianne took the last gulp of her whiskey and lowered the bottle. For a second, she pretended to turn to walk away but then she sharply turned back and smashed the empty bottle of whiskey on Fred's head. The glass shattered and Fred stumbled backwards, instantly bleeding from his head.
"Yeah that's it" Amarr muttered.
He wasn't even moved. It was like he had seen Dianne do that million times.
