Doing anything that made sergeants notice the recruits was the simplest and shortest way to get punished. Only by doing exactly what one expected and ignoring anything that wasn't directly related could one hope to keep a somewhat peaceful life at a camp.
"First thing first, you need to forget everything that you learned back in the camp," the sergeant said as if reading Shen's mind. "The rules that you were just thinking about are for infantry, not for the unit you will be in," the sergeant added.
"I'm sorry, sir, but I don't understand," Shen used all of his courage to speak.
