Chapter One: Nicholas POV
What comes to your mind when you hear the word Christmas? What makes it so special so magical? What is it in the new lights and fresh decorations that gives a feeling of warmth and happiness. It is a pleasure worth experiencing in our lives; they say.
A few years ago I used to define Christmas as a time when friends and family get together in love, when we would decorate a tree, enjoy delicious meals, exchange presents, laugh our hearts away and sing Christmas carols to remind ourselves of how lucky we are to have friends and families who love us very much.
But my luck changed too soon. It's now hard to remember how Christmas was during my younger years. When I thought that all that is well ends well, Christmas , just like all forms of magic turned from a blessing into my curse.
Now how would I describe Christmas, it is a meaningless holiday, the happiness never lasts. It will all fade away. Hopes and dreams destroyed in a blink of an eye. Living with the tragic and unforgiving experience that has changed how I see this day, Christmas day... I Nicholas Nolan Green became known as the man who hated Christmas and this is my story.
It's Christmas and I have never felt so nervous and overjoyed at the same time in my life. It's been three years of college, learning, studying and struggling to be at the top 1% to ggraduate with a bachelor's degree in business management and economics .
Today is our graduation ceremony and my friends and I are currently trying to make sure that we've packed up every belongings we had in our dorm.
Everyone's parents ,friends and relatives were arriving today. It has begun snowing in Alberta two days before Christmas. The ceremony begins around 9am and my friend, Steven and I have about 10 mins to clear out.
"What time are your parents coming? ". I asked him.
"I just got a call from them and they're here already ". He said.
"I'm really going to miss college life a lot". He continued.
"And by college life I'm sure you mean the countless number of sex, the thrill of skipping lectures, prancing professors, parties and probably drugs too". I told him.
"Seriously Nick, I know you spent your whole college life with a book literally stuck to your face but sometimes you gotta chill and loosen up. There's more to life other than books if you didn't know ".
"Mmmh". I replied barely listening to what he was saying because I was trying to fix my graduation gown. Or so I thought...
"You weren't listening to me, were you?". Steve asked.
"Was I supposed to? ".
"You're a terrible friend Nicholas and your wearing the gown the wrong way ".
"Thank you Very not so much for your sincerity and if you're done let's get outta here now". I said while readjusting the gown.
"Pftt, bossy".Now where was I, the most important part of today other than collecting my degree is seeing the proud and happy looks on my parents and sister's faces.
I haven't seen them since last semester's holiday. I'm really proud of how much I've achieved over the years gone by and I'm mostly glad and grateful for the ability to create a better life for me and my family. We lived in a ranch in the most remote place in Canada but my father was American and my parents didn't have enough money to pay for my college education but they made it happen and I'm extremely grateful for them and now it's my job to change our current economic situation. My Scholarship also paid off and now here I am sitting and waiting for the graduation ceremony to begin.
"This year's Summa Cum Laude award goes to... Nicholas Nolan Green! ". The Host said. With the whistle's, woos and applause, I made my way onto the podium with the biggest smile on my face. It was a dream come true. I gave my special speech that took me five hours to write and memorize and it probably made some people fall asleep before I was given my diploma and closed it all with a very big 'Thank you'. I looked through the seated crowd to see if I could find my parents and sister. Maybe they haven't arrived yet or I just can't find them. When the ceremony was over, we all gathered to take pictures. It's been quite a journey and I would definitely not forget it all. I told some of my close friends goodbye before they left. I hung with Steve and his family enjoying a few minutes with them.
Time was gone already and I was extremely worried because and hour had passed and my parents weren't here. I've tried calling but to make matters worse, no ones answering.
I wonder what had happened. My thoughts were soon broken by the sound of my phone ringing.
"Nick?!"
"Steven? What's up? ".
"Nick, What flight did your parents take to get here? ". Steven said sounding worried and nervous.
"uh...I'm not so sure. It's the third flight to Alberta though. What's wrong, you sound nervous".
"Nick, your parents are #k*"$#... ".
"Hello! Steven! I can't here you". The call disconnected.
" Attention everyone!. We've received a call from the airport. I'm extremely devastated and sorry to say this but flight 517C; the third flight to Alberta crashed about an hour ago".
It was like time just stopped. My mind was racing, I could hear my heart beating loudly. I couldn't breathe. I think, i think I'm having a panic attack.
"Nick! Nick! ".
"Nick, are you okay?".
...He's not responding.
"Breathe Nick, breathe...".
It sounded like Stevens voice. I couldn't see clearly, my eyes were burning with hot tears streaming down my face. I want to scream but it's stuck hard and burning in my throat in a hard lump.
I couldn't believe it...
I lost everything...
On this day...Christmas day...I never thought that I would never see my family again.
Never...
Wooooooooahhhhhh!!
