Chapter 1 - GROUND THAT HAVE EYES

Ground that have eyes

Once upon a time in the animal kingdom, Tortoise and Dog were good friends.

Dog was a loyal friend and can do anything to make tortoise happy, while Tortoise was a smart and calculative friend, he is only helpful to Dog if it will give him some gains but dog was blind to this.

One faithful day, Tortoise's wife's relatives sent a letter to him. He went with the dog to the farm so they gave it to his wife.

Tortoise and dog were arriving at Tortoise house, they can be seen discussing.

'So you are telling me that ground have eyes? Dog asked

"Yes, they do. Everything have eyes, the wall, ground, everything. The money you gave me was probably taken by the ground, he saw me putting money in it and buried it.

He obviously took the money". Tortoise replied

"Oh then, I have to gather some more to buy that bicycle I'm admiring. It will help a lot in my farming". Dog said

"Alright, dear friend," Tortoise replied.

As they get to Tortoise house, Dog wishes him goodnight and leaves.

Mrs Tortoise welcomed her husband and told him about his in-law's invitation.

" Papa said that you need to get a friend to follow you." Mrs Tortoise said

Tortoise couldn't understand why his in-laws insisted on having his friend to visit too. Maybe they want to give us some food stuff to take home, he thought and planned on telling the dog who was a good carrier of loads and runs well.

The next market day, the dog, having been informed about it, went to meet the tortoise and together they left for the tortoise 's in-law's house.

However, on their way, the tortoise suggested that they should give each other nicknames. He was to be 'Both of you', while dog was to be 'Dogg' with a double G.

Dog agreed and when they got there, food was served and the tortoise asked who it was for, the people said, 'both of you' and the tortoise turned to Dog reminding him that his nickname was 'Both of you'. Tortoise ate the all the food and drank all the drinks and ate all the snacks. The only thing the dog could eat was a kola nut that was broken to welcome them.

This continued for the three days they visited, the dog was so hungry that he became lean, he only drank water all through.

On the day of departure, the in-laws gave a lot of gifts and food stuff to them and for their wives. The tortoise Ofcourse asked who they were all for but this time, the in-law said "You and your friend". So the tortoise and dog took their individual loads and began the long trek home.

Dog ran home because he was tired and hungry. The tortoise however was walking very slowly, more slowly than he normally walks because his stomach was too full for movement.

Dog ran home, dropped his loads, greeted his wife, had a quick meal and went back to the road where he knew the tortoise would have gotten to.

When he sees the tortoise ahead, he digs the ground quickly and buries himself leaving only his eyes. He was determined to deal with the lying and cheating tortoise.

Tortoise eventually got to where the dog was buried, he was surprised to see a ground with eyes.

"Ah! So I was right afterall, my lie was actually true. Ground do have eyes!

I have seen a ground with eyes o, I have to tell the king". Tortoise dropped his loads and ran off to the palace, holding his stomach which made the noise 'bukum bukum' as he ran.

Dog quickly gets up from the ground, takes tortoise loads and runs to his house.

Tortoise however gets to the palace and tells the king about it. The king didn't believe it because such things don't exist but Tortoise kept insisting and swore with his life that if they couldn't find the ground with eyes, they should kill him and hang him in the market Square for everybody to see and spit on as a liar.

The king agreed and he, together with his chiefs and bodyguards, followed him to the place he said he saw the ground that had eyes. Tortoise led them to the place.

But when they got there, they couldn't find anything.

Tortoise was later killed and hanged in the market Square entrance for everybody to see.

Moral lesson: Do not tell lies. Do not cheat. And do not deceive people into helping you. Be a good and loyal friend not a selfish and manipulative friend.
