Chapter 5 - Chapter Three: Apologies With a Side of Starbucks

The alarm on my iPhone went off bright and early that next morning. I must've gotten some good sleep because there was a thin layer of sleep crust that had formed at the corner of my eyes. I still couldn't believe everything that had happened just within that short amount of time yesterday and the day before that. Especially the way Devon looked at me when I mentioned those weird glowing eyes. He acted really weird that whole conversation. Honestly it makes me wonder if he really could be something more. The idea of him having supernatural abilities was out of the question though. I mean that's the kind of stuff I'm tv shows aka Vampire Diaries, my all time favorite. With a little pep in my step I put on my fluffy white robe and made my way downstairs to whip up some breakfast. I only got halfway down the stairs and that's when the doorbell rang two times. My heartbeat sped up a little bit more as I cautiously crept down the rest of the stairs so I could peer through the curtains that hung near the front door. It was only 9 and someone was already at the door, that's really unusual. The stranger knocked two more times which were more aggressive than the first knock. I slowly moved the curtain and to my surprise I saw Devon. Oh boy. I'm not even dressed yet and he totally didn't call me first. Hastily fastening my robe to cover my body even more before I opened that door. I was hesitant at first but eventually came to unlock the door.

"Rise and shine, I brought you a gift," he said with a grin.

"What's with the grin? And what's the gift? I was just about to make breakfast"

"Welllll I thought I should come and apologize for my rude behavior yesterday, it was quite unbecoming of me. So I brought you this gift to seal the apology even more." He said while he held two cups of Starbucks and a white paper bag. Since I didn't want him to see that he totally piqued my interest with that coffee, I tried to sound as unmoved as possible.

"What's in the bag, you trying to poison me or something"

"No you goof, it's your favorite; two breakfast sandwiches and a hash brown."

How did he know?!? I haven't told him that. I crossed my arms and shifted my weight a little at the fact that he knew something.

"I also got you a coffee, matter of fact it's a VENTI hot coffee with 3 pumps of hazelnut, 2 pumps of vanilla and some caramel all around." My head exploded. How????

"First off, how did you know all this? Are you stalking me or something?"

"No, not exactly. It's just, well, I may or may not have seen you at the coffee shop a couple weeks ago and I was sitting close to the register. I overheard your order and I thought you were the most strikingly beautiful woman I had ever seen. So obviously I had to remember your order just in case I ever got the chance to bump into you one day and look, here we are." he said with a smirk.

My face flushed and I instantly started blushing. I tried to cover my face but it was too late, he already managed to see how he had gotten to me. How could he make me want to shake him until his brain got scrambled but also get major butterflies at the same time. Nothing made sense, however that coffee managed to tease my nose with its aroma of delicious goodness.I rolled my eyes and eventually laughed at his story, I brushed it off and proceeded to act as normal as I possibly could, even though he had just made me blush.

"Oh" I said with a tone of humbleness. "I guess that makes sense. I'm sorry I'm coming off as cold, it's just I'm not used to people paying attention to me. My parents hardly ever did. Always on the phone with clients or on their next flight to whatever destination they needed to be at for their job." I can't believe I just spilled all of that onto him, it's just now barely 9:20. I could sense the pity in his eyes as I was explaining.

"Hey, it's okay, don't worry about it." He said as he handed the coffee over to me. "Something tells me you're not a morning person either, right?"

I chuckled a little and said "no not in the slightest, but this morning I actually had enough energy to run down the stairs until I heard you bang on the door"

"Sorry not sorry, the two coffees were burning my hands. Those baristas must've been mad at somebody because they made them extra hot today for no good reason."

A giggle escaped from me as I finally let my guard down and opened the door wider to welcome him inside. Before Devon went further in, he took his shoes off and left them right inside the entrance. Pheewww, I'm glad he wasn't that type of person. At least he has the decency to take shoes off unlike most people I know. Acting like I didn't notice that minor detail, I led him through the main entrance, around the corner and into the overly spacious kitchen. I proceeded to walk towards the cabinets and retrieve some plates. As if he already knew what I was going to do next, he started preparing the sandwiches. As we sat down and ate, it felt as though time was irrelevant. Almost as if everything stopped and it was just the two of us. We actually got to know each other a little bit more. Our conversation flowed like a crystal stream entwining its way through the narrow stone carved path in the middle of the forest. Never ending. His blue eyes looked at me as if they were piecing their way through to my soul, searching for something that had been lost and long forgotten. Devon's eyes sparkled with warmth and an overwhelming sense of gentleness as I continued to tell him bits and pieces of my life. He seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say. This was definitely something that I never had experienced before with anyone.
