Chapter 44 - Attacking the dragon

The plan is set in motion, Serena commands her small undead army, which, with eerie efficiency, marches toward the fortress's gates. Their unsettling presence creates a diversion, drawing the attention of the fortress's defenders.

Meanwhile, Chris, Amelia, Noctera, and Serena move with stealth and precision, climbing the fortress walls undetected. They make their way through the darkness, taking out the sentries one by one, their movements guided by their training and camaraderie.

Amelia, with her healing powers at the ready, ensure the group remains free of any injuries. Noctera's strategic insight keeps them on track, while Serena's magical abilities are used to create an invisible shield around them, masking their presence.

In the shadowy night, as they silently dispatch the sentries, the companions maintain a hushed yet resolute conversation.

Noctera, her tone low and strategic, whispers, "Remember, we need to take them down without alerting others. We're relying on their silence."

Noctera uses her powers of the Night to silently choke one sentry after another.

Chris, as he readies his weapon, replies, "They won't see us coming. We've trained for this, and they'll never know what hit them."

Amelia, her eyes scanning the fortress walls, offers a calming presence, saying, "Keep your focus, everyone. We can do this, but we have to be vigilant."

Chris silently dispatches of several sentries at once using his energy bullets.

Serena, her magical aura shimmering faintly in the darkness, adds with a hint of dark humor, "If they knew what was coming, they might have stayed in bed tonight."

Another sentry falls without making a sound. Serena fell it with a conjured bone spear.

They look around, there isn't a single sentry left to be found.

The companions, having successfully dealt with the sentries, make their way into the central keep of the fortress. The ominous presence of Magmiranda, the ancient dragon, awaits them. As they enter, the dragon's voice, at first a low whisper, rises into a fearsome roar.

"I sensed your arrival, and it made me so excited," Magmiranda's voice reverberates through the chamber, filled with a dark anticipation. "Now I shall claim my revenge by burning you alive!"

The group stands their ground, unwavering in the face of the dragon's wrath. Their journey, trials, and unwavering determination have brought them to this defining moment. With weapons at the ready, magic coursing through their veins, and unity as their strength, they prepare to confront the ancient dragon and bring an end to the threat that has loomed over their village.

As Magmiranda rises into the air and exhales a fiery breath, the companions swiftly take action.

Chris summons a protective shield that envelops the group, promptly hardening as the molten lava covers it. He releases the shield as a wave of energy, sending shards of cooling lava scattering across the hall.

Magmiranda, undeterred, descends and strikes out with her massive claws, but Noctera's prayer takes hold, weakening the dragon's resolve. Amelia's holy orbs intercept the dragon, further disorienting her. Serena raises a formidable wall of bones, obstructing the dragon's path.

Chris, standing just behind the protective wall, readies a colossal sword of pure energy. With the dragon's strength waning, she is pummeled by the holy orb, crashes into the bone wall, and then faces the oncoming massive sword. In her attempt to dodge, one of her talons is severed.

Disoriented and injured, Magmiranda breaks through a bone wall and escapes to the open sky, where she can feel her power slowly returning. The battle takes on a new rhythm as it shifts outdoors.

Goblins and Imps swarm from various points in the fortress and charge at the companions. The group now faces a relentless onslaught of both Magmiranda's power and her seemingly endless minions, creating a chaotic and draining battle as they struggle to defend themselves and hold their ground.

Noctera's words cut through the chaos of the battle, a clear-headed reminder of their predicament. "We need to retreat before we are exhausted and overrun," she declares with a hint of frustration.

The companions exchange glances, their frustration tempered with determination. They slowly and methodically fight their way out of the fortress, backing away from the relentless onslaught.

They find Serena's undead having just broken through the gates and find some respite having the undead block the oncoming goblins, while they simply run out through the main gates.

Amelia, as they move toward the forest, comments, "This is not the end. We'll regroup and come back stronger."

The fortress with the fighting undead that were about to be overrun is quickly fading away in the distance behind them.

Chris, his voice filled with resilience, adds, "The kingdom depends on us. We will be back."

Serena, her magic still at the ready, cling to a glimmer of hope, thinking, "Chris will find a way to overcome this, just as he has overcome every other threat. Including my corrupted self."

With unwavering resolve, they retreat into the protective cover of the forest. Magmiranda, tempted to follow, is restrained by the memory of her severed talon. The battle may have reached a temporary impasse, but the companions understand that they must regroup and devise a new strategy to confront the ancient dragon and secure their future safety.

In the aftermath of the battle, Magmiranda shares a similar sentiment. She knows that she must devise a new strategy to rid herself of the persistent and resilient pest known as Chris. The thought of her severed talon serves as a stark reminder of the challengers who have dared to stand against her. The ancient dragon, though angered and injured, remains a formidable adversary, and she understands that the battle is far from over.

As Magmiranda retreats to her lair, she broods on her plans, contemplating how to outmaneuver the determined group of champions. The need for a new strategy burns brightly in her mind, for she recognizes that the village's defenders have grown stronger and more resourceful with each encounter.

The stage is set for a battle of wits and strength, and both sides are acutely aware that their next confrontation will be the most critical of all.
