As Death finished talking, Pedro walked out with all of their food. He placed everyone's selected meals in front of them while Famine spoke first, "You guys killed people?"
"Why is that a surprise?" War said as he picked up his wooden chopsticks and broke them apart.
"I don't know. I guess it makes sense for Death and War to kill people, but Pestilence I would never take you as a murderer."
"I didn't kill anyone!" Pestilence said as she stuffed her face with chicken nuggets.
"So how did all those people die in the bar?" Death said as he played with his pasta.
"Well, I've had my theories, but the man I was talking to wasn't there."
"The one who got cheated on by a dog?" War snickered.
"Yeah. Okay, he may not sound real now that I'm hearing it back. I've never told anyone about that. I think I might have made him rage out a bit and kill everyone there."
"So you caused it," War said, "you used your powers on him while you were drunk and you raged him out to be able to take on a bar full of people."
"Some of them might have been powerless," Famine said. "You know it's a major problem in society that powerless people are turning towards drugs and alcohol."
"Sometimes people's bodies are born with the capability of having powers but they simply just don't have powers." Death responded as he scarfed down his pasta. Famine blushed as she looked over at Death.
"Death, how many people have you dated?" Famine asked
"Zero."
"You don't consider Naomi as a date?"
"It was a hangout I believe."
"If you dated her would you have still killed her?"
"Probably not."
Famine frowned, "Where do you all draw the line with death? I'm honestly really concerned about this."
"If I may interject," Pestilence said, "it's either us or them."
"Agreed," War and Death said simultaneously.
"We are The Horsemen. We have to be prepared to do whatever it takes to stop the Apocalypse."
"But if we're saving people we shouldn't be killing them. As the oldest I think I hold some authority in saying this."
Famine is 27. Pestilence is 25. War is 21. Death is 19.
"But I'm the Avatar of Conquest. I come first, therefore I'm the leader. Plus I fund most of this operation."
"Using Ubermensch's money," War said, "I think we should talk about that. Where does your money come from Pestilence?"
"Technically most of it comes from my family. I'm still under my family's insurance plan," Pestilence said.
"You got one more year before you got to get off," Famine said chuckling.
"Wait. How much does Ubermensch know about this?" Death said.
"He doesn't know a thing, relax. I hope. Even if I did tell him, it is way too late now. He despises liars and he'll kill me if he finds out I lied to him." Pestilence said as she bit into some celery.
"Woah, you hope? If that leaf blower of a husband of yours shows up at any of our doorsteps, we're all dead. Not just you, but out families and us." War said.
"Pestilence how many people have Ubermensch killed," Famine asked, "If he's killed a lot of people, then he's not much of a hero. Has he only killed villains? What about civilian causalities? Now that I think about it a year ago Ubermensch got into some drama because he couldn't cry during a high school girl's funeral."
"Yeah, he laughed during Naomi's funeral." Death interjected as his eyes shifted to a velvet shade.
"Dude, you killed her." War said.
Death glanced at War, his eyes shifted to a deep blue, as he inhaled and exhaled quietly, but strong.
"War. No one brought up your suicidal thoughts. Do you want to talk about it?" Pestilence said.
"Nope. It was just a moment of weakness." War said as Death's eyes shifted to a calmer blue.
They all grew silent as they ate their food. Famine ate half of her food before frowning and jumping out of her seat. Everyone stopped eating and looked at her as she briskly walked past Pestilence to reach a jukebox that stood next to the front door. She took out her phone and tapped it a few times. The jukebox was modern, but had an authentic 1950s look. It beeped and shifted colors like Death's eyes, then stayed a solid baby blue. Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" began playing as Famine started hugging herself and swaying side to side.
"Kiss me hard before you go. Summertime sadness." Famine's voice crackled through the air like thunder as War erupted into laughter.
"Please stop, you sound like a siren," War said.
Famine closed her eyes and began flailing her arms as she continued to swing her body around. She hopped in the air, throwing a fist high into the sky like she was trying to take Ubermensch out of the sky.
"Can you at least put on some real music," War said.
"Lana Del Rey is real music! What kind of music do you listen to," Famine said as she stopped and extended her arm out towards War with her pointer finger out.
"I listen to slipknot. Please put on some Psychosocial. Not this summertime sadness shit."
"What are you saying War? No one wants to listen to men scream over a beat," Pestilence said. "Keep playing this Famine I like it. Great choice."
Famine blushed. "Hey wait a minute! Remember talking about my feelings. Let's not disregard them now. No disrespect, but whatever you were playing was straight ass," War said, then tapped Death's shoulders. "What do you think we should listen to?"
Death got up, wiped his mouth with a napkin, then walked over to Famine. He opened his hand next to her, and she handed him her phone. He tapped on it as the Lana Del Rey song stopped and another song started. With the pluck of a guitar string, the Horsemen all snapped into a groove. The beautiful electrical slide of Freddie Mercury's voice entering their ears got all of them. Each abuse of the drum pumped their chest as though the song itself was giving them CPR.
"Steve walks warily down the street with the brim pulled all the way down low." Death began singing as brought his arms close to his torso and swayed his hips, he puckered his lips and tap danced over to Famine.
"Ain't no sound, but the sound of his feet. Machine guns ready to go." Famine screeched.
"Are you ready?" War said as he slid across the polished floor and shuffled his way to Death and Famine. "Hey are you ready for this? Are you hanging on the edge of your seat."
"You have to sing," Famine said chuckling as she attempted to dance in front of Death.
"Out of the doorway, the bullets rip to the sound of the beat! Yeah!" Pestilence, like an angel caressed the Horsemen's ears as she shimmied and twirled her way to the group.
They all swung their backs back, laid their fists on their hips, then exploded with movement as they all sang, "Another one bites the dust!" They all broke off into separate dance moves. Famine danced like Charlie Brown. Death tangoed with a ghost, Naomi. War was breaking dancing, he swung his feet above his head as his hands kissed the ground below. Pestilence was twirling and tap dancing.
"Another one bites the dust," they repeated as they sang along the song laughing.
*BRRT BRRT*
Pestilence phone rang, "Sorry I have to take take this." She took her phone out of her pocket and walked outside of the restaurant. She picked up the phone, "Hey Uby, what's up?"
"Yeah, the Union called everyone up today. So I wanted to let you know I'll be home late." Ubermensch said.
"The union called all the heroes for a meeting? What's the meeting even on?"
"The Horsemen."
