Chapter 30 - Suddenly

What a disaster

The officers bowed as I made my way to the back exit. Because of my additional luggage, I had no choice but leave another way.

"Are you sure about this, Legionary Cynllun? If the other Legionaries find out about this, I don't think even your position and title will be enough."

The captain eyed me suspiciously, his eyes trained on the 'luggage' by my side. It would seem that Captain Schwein was underestimating me. Probably thinking that my well-deserved title and hard-earned position was little more than fancy decorations that us high-ranking officials wore everywhere.

Though, I guess even I would be unable to avoid punishment for this.

If I get caught that is

"I understand that my actions might seem unorthodox. Probably even crazy to some select people… but, please. I would be ever so grateful if you would keep this between us."

I gaze at the man with glossy, seductive eyes–a technique I had gotten accustomed to. It was unbecoming of me. Acting like one of those pretty suck-ups that clung to any kind of power they could get ahold of. Whether that would be political, financial, or societal. Seduction really wasn't one of my strong suits.

Still, if the captain is who I expect him to be, this much should be…

The captain blushed like a tomato. As in, he really did look like one. His plump cheeks turned into a bright shade of red–just like a tomato. He was also breathing a little heavier than he usually would. I expected him to take the bait, but not this easily.

Men really are easy

"Don't worry Ma'am. Your secret is all safe with me! I swear on my badge that I will do everything in my power to keep this secret between us. So, uh, if you wouldn't mind…. Can I have your personal contact informatio–"

"Ah, sorry. I have a bunch of things to do after this. If you'll just take care of the paperwork, then that would be fine. I'll handle the rest. Don't call me, I'll call you mmkay~?"

As soon as we made our way out to the back alley beyond the back exit, I hurriedly made my way to my personal vehicle. With a familiar click, the door opened. I didn't even have to open it myself.

"G-Got it! I'll be waiting for your call… W-wait, I never gave you my number!!"

With a deep sigh, the door closed. I made sure to strap in my 'luggage' by my side.

"Thanks, Dilyn. I swear, if that guy wasn't a police captain. He'd already be dead with scams and fraud. How did he even become a police captain? It looked to me like he was more fit to serve than to lead. Really a poor choice to pick."

As soon as I closed the door to the backseat of the personal vehicle, the engine roared to life. In a few seconds, we were out of the alleyway. The captain's figure was nowhere to be seen.

Not like I'd even want to see him in the first place

The window between the driver and passenger seat rolled down, revealing a man in his mid-forties. He had grey hair covering most of his head. Though there were a couple of black patches here and there, it was fair to say that the man was getting up in age. I continued my spiel.

"Hah~ Why did the higher-ups want me here anyways? I know that I'm new and they don't trust me that much. But still, this kind of work isn't something a legionary should be doing. No matter how much of rookie they are."

I sighed once again, this time, a tug came from my left. I turn my head towards the boy.

"What do you want kid?"

I address the small boy sitting beside me uncomfortably. His eyes darted at every corner of my personal vehicle. I couldn't tell whether he was curious or had some sort of hidden agenda. The kid responded.

"…why…"

"What was that?"

What did he just say?

"…Why me?..."

The kid repeated in a low murmur. His voice was barely audible. He seemed to be confused. Curious as to how things will turn out from here. He was nothing more than a scared little boy who knows nothing about the world.

Or at least he pretends to be…

"Because I said so."

The kid whipped his head up at me. His eyes met mine. His black eyes were wet and pretty much on the verge of bursting. He wiped the snot dripping from his nose, embarrassed.

"T-thank you."

At least, he knew how to be thankful

I lean on the window of my personal vehicle. A couple of sobs came from the side, but I didn't look back. The kid still had much to learn. He'll have to go through so much more to be able to be useful to me.

A small complaint naturally leaked out as I watched the scenery fly by.

"What have I gotten myself into…?"

◇◆◇◆◇

Come to think of it, this wasn't the first time I was coerced into doing something I had never even considered before. I would often get dragged in things out of the blue like this.

Ever since I met my mentor, my life had been nothing but a series of misfortunate instance. It made me wonder if she just took me in to play with my emotions countless times.

"Hey~~ Can you hear me…? If you don't respond, I'll blast you to pieces with my magic, ya' know?"

I vigorously nodded my head. She surprised me to the point that my brain kinda just stopped working for a second there.

She breathed a sigh of relief before eventually giving a smile as bright as the unseen sun.

"Really?! WOW~! I didn't actually think you'll take my offer. I thought I'll actually have to blow your head off. Phew~"

Is she stupid or just careless?

Without hesitation, she grabbed my hand. Her own hand felt strangely comforting, the softness like a pillow made out of the finest materials. She spoke once more, her other hand pinching her nose.

"For now, you should take a bath."
