Chapter 15 - Aftermath

「You have obtained the title 'Executioner'」

「You have leveled up」

「Your attribute 'Absorption' is activating」

「No applicable skills can be obtained from the target」

And so, here we are

In this desolate place, the dead, and their relatives running and screaming as the horror cornered them. This was the choice I had made.

To kill for my sake…

To live for my sake…..

To do whatever it takes to look beyond that infinite horizon.

My head ached like it was being pierced by thousands of needles. The spell's effect had long disappeared. When it did, a pain like a hammer was repeatedly being hammered from inside my head assaulted me. I almost went crazy from the pain and decided to vent on my surroundings.

Because of this, I couldn't remember much after killing the knights. The remaining soldiers came and …well, tried to defeat me, I killed them. I could have let them live, sure, but decided not to. I didn't know what kind of trouble would follow me when I did so.

Besides, I doubt they would just let me go after what I did to their friends

Moving away from the soldier's corpses, I spot a pair of siblings dragging an unconscious woman. They were saying something.

I still couldn't understand anything they said.

By now, I thought I would have gotten some sort of skill that let me understand – or at least guess – foreign languages. It seemed that it wouldn't be that easy.

Well, it's not like I'm going to meet anybody who would even talk to me

Dejected, I pulled out a dagger. I got it from the knight's bodies. Since I defeated them I thought it was only natural that I get first dibs on their stuff. This included a few pieces of leather armor, a sturdy-looking sword, and a pair of arm-guards. I tried putting on the silver armor, but found that they were two sizes too small. As for the staff that led me to learn of the presence of mana…

I turn my head to the running knight, his back gleaming with the staff's luster. Despite the cries and pleads of the citizen's coming from all direction, he didn't once looked back. I had to give it to him. He was smart. Had I been in the same position, I would have most likely done the same, given that I was absolutely certain of my chances at losing. He was too far away for me to follow.

Turning my head away, I looked back at the pair of siblings. They were gone.

Odd…

Shaking my head, I cleared my thoughts. It was ineffective. My headache was still there.

Is this what a hangover is like…?

I smirked from the nostalgic phrase. I've said this before, though I'm not sure where and when. Like a siren, a scream tore through the upper realm. I quickly hid myself.

I was wondering where the others were

Looking up from my hiding place, I take a quick look at the flying menace. I had to be quick or I would risk the chance of being spotted. Despite behind a suitable hiding spot, I still wasn't confident. These birds had a very potent detection ability, similar to my 「Instinct」 skill.

The bird had a light-blue set of feathers, like the unseen sky in the eternal darkness. I studied the flying creature, especially the green flow of mana constantly surrounding him. Despite exhausting my mana, I could still make out the details of the spell.

It was fascinating, to say the least. Continuously using magic to produce an updraft and keep oneself afloat was fascinating. The goblin mage would tire out after casting just a couple of spells. Having to bite her lips just to stay awake. The bird was different.

Even from this distance, I could tell that the beast was on a completely different level. The way it used the scarce green mana to efficiently keep itself afloat was a spectacle.

Lost in my thoughts, I failed to notice that the flying beast was gliding near the vicinity of my current location, searching for something. It had the expression of somebody who just smelled something unpleasant. I quickly hid myself further.

Despite my sudden awakening, I wasn't confident that I could beat the beast in a fight, let alone it's entire clan. I only chose the goblins because I was confident that I could make it out alive even if in the worst case scenario. I held my breath.

The beast continued to encircle the area above my current location. This continued for a couple of grueling minutes until the beast eventually grew tired and decided to leave.

Phew

I let out a tired breath. Even though I have learnt magic and obtained valuable equipment, I was still just looking at the small picture. My vision is too clouded.

… Well, at least I know who I'm going for next
