Chapter 1 - The Determined Little Children

In time immemorial, there lived a family in Saakaadi. The family included Mr. and Mrs. Anyetibabiisi and their three children, Kelvin, Benjamin and Fortress. The elder son was 20 years old and the young son was also 17 years old, while their only daughter was 13 years old.

They have been farming for many years without gaining much from their hustle. The land needed to be fertilised but they could not get money to improve upon the farm in order to get a good harvest from it. They could not also survive without it. Therefore, every year they had to plough the land just to get what could sustain them.

Mr. and Mrs. Anyetibabiisi had been living for the past several years in total poverty due to lack of finance. They had been using their little money to invest in the education of their children so that they could at least give a better education which would bring a good name to their home and change the impoverishment status of their family.

Fortunately, their children were all brilliant. They all took their studies seriously and were performing marvelously in their various classes. They passed all the exams that they wrote with distinction and all the teachers liked them because of that. The only thing their parents needed to do was to generate money to support the education of their children.

Kelvin who was the elderly son would always sit his brother and sister down and advise them to take their studies seriously. He told them the only thing that would save them was through education. Kelvin assured his siblings that without education, they would continue to be poorer but when they work harder they would be employed in the future and they would take good care of their parents and other people in their community. In the year 2010, Kelvin completed J.H.S with aggregate 6 and had admission into one of the prestigious Senior High Schools in the country.  And he was to offer General Science as a course. Kelvin was good at all his subjects.  He also assisted his friends who were having difficulties in understanding certain subjects. He took his time and explained to them and they seemed to understand him even better than their teacher did in class. No wonder he was one of the best students not only in his class, but in the school as well.  Therefore, he was made a representative of the school's National Science and Math Quiz Club. Kelvin never disappointed his school with his brilliance as Kelvin led the school to win many awards in debates and quizzes competitions which were organized both within the region and across the length and breadth of the country.

After three years in school, he wrote his WASSCE and came out with 8As. His parents were very happy for him and promised to even sell their last available clothes to make sure he got the best University in the country to attend. His favourite meal was prepared for him in appreciation for the marvelous performance in his WASSCE. Meanwhile, Kelvin had applied for a scholarship while in school. After one month of the release of their results, he had a message from the center that he had been selected among the best 20 students to study in one of the best universities in the United States of America. The news hit his parents and they shed tears of joy. They were very happy for their son and on that note; they encouraged him once again for winning that award which had brought a financial relief to them. They also advised their other children to take their studies seriously and perform very well like their brother was doing.

Preparations for his trip started and the family again was happily sad. They were happy their son was going outside the country to study, but they were also sad that they were going to miss him all the years he was going to stay away from them.  Kelvin was offered an eight year programme in medicine. He was to stay in the U.S without returning to Ghana until he had done with the programme.  Kelvin finally took off with his other 19 colleagues the following week.  Some of his friends were to study Law, Engineering, Economics, History, Geography, among other programmes. Kelvin almost changed his mind to study Law because one of his best friends was in for Law and had tried to convince Kelvin to join him in that programme. He knew what Kelvin could do. So, he wanted to have him in his class to support him whenever there was the need However, he was advised to stick to his initial programme since it was also a hot cake in the job market.

Once again, when he got there, he was performing greatly even though he found it difficult to understand the accent of the lecturers as it was the first time having white men and women teaching him. He started competing with his mates as usual; his burning desire for learning had always put him ahead of them. He was given the best students' award at the end of his eight years study in the university and was very happy and proud of himself. He promised to learn harder in order to get more awards. Kelvin was asked to study for another one year to gain a certificate in a specialty programme which would make him a specialist. He did study as a gynecologist and he excelled in that field too.

In the United States, when you stay there for more than eight years, you could be given the chance to be registered as a partial citizen of the country. With that registration, one could travel in and out of the country any day or time one wanted.  Kelvin did like the idea of living in the U.S while his parents were suffering back home. He also knew where he came from and that his people needed his support.

After his eight year study, he got registered as a partial citizen so that when he returned to Ghana, he could go back to the U.S to further his education or just to visit his old friends. While Kelvin made a good effort to come back home to serve his people, most of his friends decided to stay back in the U. S either to continue to climb the academic ladder or to fit into the luxury of the environment which was far advanced than where they came from.

In 2021, he returned to Ghana and they welcomed him with happiness. He stayed with his family, whom he had missed a lot and also took some time to visit most of his friends in town. Kelvin was then later posted to work in one of the deprived areas which lacked a doctor.  However, it had been on his mind to work in his hometown so that; he could satisfy some of the basic health care needs of his people through his profession. Therefore, he started making arrangements in order to get transferred to work in the newly built hospital in his hometown.

Fortunately for Kelvin, he was transferred to his hometown.  One of the reasons that made everyone like to be attended to by him was the fact that; he got his training from the U.S and because he was also a specialist and understood them well in their local dialect.  Patients had to travel from far and near communities just to seek medical treatment because; he was really doing well in that sector.  He treated them well and even sometimes paid bills for those who genuinely could pay for their treatment.

On his younger brother's 20th birthday, he promised to take him abroad  to read law because he had also passed his WASSCE with distinction and could meet the standards of any University he would like to go into and study law. Therefore, preparations started for his trip to Canada while their last born; Fortress was still in SHS 2 and offering General Arts as a course because she had the mind of becoming a Journalist in the near future.

While it took Benjamin close to 6 years to complete his Law programme and to be called to the bar, his sister, Fortress had used only 4 years to complete her programme for Journalism. They were therefore, both a lawyer and journalist respectively and they started working as professionals in their various fields of work.

While Kelvin was buried in his job, he still had eyes to search around for his soul mate. Therefore, many were surprised when it was announced that Kelvin was getting married at long last. He got married to one beautiful Midwife called Rosalyn from Jaga. Benjamin also got married to his long time girlfriend who was also his classmate in the senior high school and came from Bolaya. She was working as a Physician Assistant at the Bisi Hospital.

Kelvin together with his two siblings built a mansion for their parents and they were very happy. They thanked God for answering their prayers by making all their three children successful in life and still prayed that God should continue to guide them in all the days of their lives.

Years passed by and Fortress, their last born finally got married to an Engineer from Vongo.  Her wedding was well attended to by both her two brothers and their families and other friends in town and where she was working.  Indeed, the wedding celebration stayed as the talk of town for year . Kelvin, Ben, and Fortress were successful in their lives. They each had made in life and were very supportive to their parents and the community in general. With the level of poverty in their family as they were growing up, nobody gave them a chance in life. They formed a youth club and advised youth to take their studies seriously so that they can be responsible and wealthy people in the near future.  They often used their lifestyle as an example to encourage everyone not to let poverty prevent them from achieving whatever they wanted in their lives.
