Chapter 9 - The New Student (II)

"Thanks," I muttered and turned my face away from him. I didn't want to stare at that face for too long.

"You should be more careful." He said.

I nodded, and when I looked at him again, I saw the image of him and Bianca kissing and I felt a little stab in my chest. "I've gotta go," I said, walking faster ahead of him

"Hey," He jogged over to me, catching up with just few strides. "Since  we're both having English class, let's just walk together."

"I can't, I want to run to class."

He raised one eyebrow up in question while chuckling, "Why?"

"Why, because we might arrive in class together, then, she'll let you go to your seat peacefully while she'll decide to send me to the principal."

"That sounds unfair."

"You have no idea." I replied dryly. Why was he even talking to me after a whole week of ignoring me and then kissing Bianca?

"Seems like we got here together after all." Jason said as we stood at the entrance of the class.

Mrs Berkeley stopped what she was doing to look at the both of us evilly. I was glued to the spot I was standing but when Jason walked confidently past Mrs Berkeley towards his seat, I followed closely behind, half expecting her to shout 'Perkins' and stop me in my tracks but surprisingly, she didn't and I sat down in my regular seat—beside Sally.

Mrs Berkeley cleared her throat before bringing out her copy of Wuthering heights and reading it out to the whole class.

As she was drowned in the book she was reading, Sally brought out her phone beside me, holding it out to show me something, "This has gone viral Jen," she said in a chirpy voice.

I looked at it carefully, it was the video of I and Josh kissing, I removed my face and scoffed, "I figured."

"Why did he make it public?"

I shrugged, "I don't know."

"I think it has something to do with the school's vlog."

I sighed, sinking down in my seat. "Honestly, I don't care."

Her eyebrows furrowed, "You don't really sound excited."

"That's because I'm not, what's there to be excited about," I snapped rather loudly which made Sally shrink back in shock and Mrs Berkeley gave me a warning look before she continued reading.

At that moment, I wished she had sent me out of class because I felt bad that I snapped at Sally. I gave her a sideways glance. She was also looking at me.

"I understand, we'll talk later." She whispered with a wink.

I smiled and nodded, then I focused back on Berkeley. It was really nice that Sally understood. I was really lucky to have a friend like her.

"Can you please give me Jason's number?"

I turned back to look at the girl who asked. From the tone of her voice she sounded indian and looked scared like she was forced to ask as her dark eyeballs couldn't seem to hold mine confidently. What made her even think I had Jason's number?

"Maybe later, I'm trying to concentrate here." I replied, turning back to my original position to face Mr. Shawn, our calculus teacher. I didn't even have Jason's number but I didn't want to tell her that.

I wasn't even understanding what Me. Shawn was saying no matter how hard I tried. It was as if he was speaking gibberish.

Someone then entered the class but I couldn't make out the person face as he was backing the class with his black leather jacket and black jeans.

"Are you the new student the principal sad was coming today?" Mr  Shawn asked.

"Yeah." He replied.

Why did the voice sound eerily familiar? Even the dressing too.

Mr Shawn nodded, "It'd be really nice if the class knew your name."

He turned to face us and I was shell shocked as my eyes widened in reflex. He was the same guy who snatched my teddy bear and ran away with it. I became angry as I remembered the scene. His face was hardly one to be forgotten.

"I'm Alex Tyler and I look forward to having a fun time with you guys." He said with a slight smirk on his chiseled face.

Some people murmured their reply while I was still in shock that he was really here. Like what are the odds you meet a psycho thief and the next day you meet the same person in your class?

"You can sit beside Perkins, the brunette over there." He pointed at me. Why would he tell him to sit beside me?

He looked over to me and smirked. He didn't even look surprised that I was there. Or did he come here knowing that I'd be here?

He came over and took the seat beside me, "Hey Teddy."

I looked at him with a frown on my face, "What the hell are you doing here?"

He shrugged, "The last time I checked, high school is open for anyone who is willing to pay for it and to learn too."

I banged my head on the locker in frustration. Was he really going to be schooling here? In this same class? Maybe it wouldn't actually be as bad as I thought.

"Perkins, you might want to listen to what I'm saying, it's very important. Your grade in calculus was very bad last year and I wouldn't want a reoccurrence of that." Mr. Shawn said

My mouth dropped open in bewilderment. Did he really just say that in front of the time whole class?

I looked beside me and Alex was looking at me. He shook his head. "That's bad." He muttered with a solemn look on his face.

I frowned and looked away.

Mr Shawn continued his teaching and then he suddenly paused. "Perkins, I'd like you to answer this question. If you get it correctly, I wouldn't bother you about your grades anymore." He said, then he dropped the question.

Here it goes, I said in my head as I stood up confidently. I cleared my throat. "Well," I pursed my lips, "I have no idea."

Mr Shawn shook his head, sighed and gave me a look of pity, "You can have your seat."

I sat down with a downcast look, cursing my stupid brain for not functioning properly and embarrassing me in front of the whole class. It was a relief that Bianca and Jason weren't in my calculus classes.

"You shouldn't have stood up with so much confidence if you weren't going to say anything quite reasonable."

I closed my eyes in frustration. It seemed like someone worse than Bianca was in my calculus class. The only difference being that Bianca makes sure the whole class hears what she says.

"I'm sure that if the tables were turned, you wouldn't even be able to make a coherent speech." I retorted snarkily

"Is there anyone who can give a shot at answering that question?" Mr Shawn's loud voice cut through what Alex was about to say in reply.

Alex coughed and Mr Shawn faced him, "Do you have anything to say?"

He gave a careless shrug, "I guess so."

"Well then, go on."

Alex stood up and started answering the question. He spoke brilliantly without unnecessary pause or mistake that even I stared in amazement. I didn't know if what he was saying was correct but we the way he spoke, even if he was wrong, he'd be mistaken for being correct.

Mr Shawn smiled as Alex finished talking, "That was absolutely correct Tyler."

Everyone in the class applauded him except me as I was still in shock, if anyone was in my place, they would have been in the same state. I didn't understand how a person who stole a teddy bear and ran away with it just for fun could be so good at calculus.

'Thank you." He smiled and curtsied before he sat back down.

I rolled my eyes at the show.

"Do you have anything to say Teddy?" Alex asked, smirking at me.

I scoffed and gave him a daring look, staring right at his dark green eyes and firm lips curved upwards lazily, "You just got lucky."
