Human World, Japan, Kuoh
While Dante and Vergil were charging toward Mundus, he spread his arms wide. Then, in each hand, a massive, curved greatsword appeared. Taking a stance with the sword in his left hand facing toward the incoming half-devils, Mundus positioned the sword in his right hand so that it was hidden behind his massive, muscular body.
As the twins drew near, Vergil, with his superior speed, managed to reach Mundus first. Unsheathing Yamato with an iaido draw, he was surprised at how easily his sword was blocked. When Dante followed up with an overhead swing of his own, Vergil was even more surprised when Mundus dexterously redirected both swords and blocked Dante's attack as well.
"Did he just block both our attacks with one sword?" Dante asked in an incredulous tone.
"Even if you two trained with that freak, Scathach, and the centaur for years, do you really think that is enough to bridge the gap in experience with me?" Mundus asked with a smile that somehow radiated both kindness and malevolence. "If you do, then you are much more naive than I thought."
"Silence!" Vergil ordered as he took on his [Devil Trigger] state.
Following Vergil's lead, Dante pushed away from the three-way stalemate. As he did, he also transformed into his [Devil Trigger] state. Then, when he was far enough away, he slung Rebellion onto his back, and unholstered Ebony and Ivory.
*Bang!* *Bang!* *Bang!*
Just as Dante started shooting, Vergil stepped away from Mundus. As Mundus began spinning his greatsword to block the incoming gun fire, Vergil raised his speed to its limit and began dashing between the bullets, slashing his sword at Mundus from every direction.
Even with their coordinated attacks, however, Mundus remained unharmed. While blocking Dante's bullets with the sword in his left hand, he blocked and parried Vergil's slashes with the sword in his right.
Realizing that gunfire was not working, Dane holstered his pistols and drew his sword once again. Then, he dashed into close combat. Like Vergil, he also began dashing back and forth past Mundus to attack. But like with Vergil, Mundus was ablet to defend against all of Dante's attacks with just one of his swords.
Eventually, the brothers both took their distance from Mundus, with one on each side of him.
"Damn, this guy is good." Dante grumbled. "A few months ago, this fight would have been impossible to win."
"Yes, it seems that training with both Scathach and Chiron was quite effective."
Nodding at each other, Dante was the first to charge forward this time. Vergil on the other hand, swept his sword horizontally, causing several phantoms of his sword to shoot forward toward Mundus. And just as the sword phantoms appeared, Dante also appeared with his sword reeled back and ready to be thrust forward.
"Good." Mundus said with a nod after seeing the incoming attacks. "If that was all you had to show, you would not have been worth the time it would take for me to kill you."
Flaring his demonic energy, Mundus swung the sword in his left hand even faster than before, dealing with the few sword phantoms that Vergil conjured. Meanwhile, with the flat of the blade in his right hand, he blocked Dante's thrust.
*Clang!* *Clang!* *Clang!*
Among the sounds of clashing metal, Mundus was surprised at how quickly Dante was able to recover his sword and thrust it forward again, and how rapidly he continued to do so. On top of that, he had to push his concentration to its limit to deal with the simultaneous attacks from Vergil's sword phantoms.
"I'll admit, you're bet---" Mundus began to speak; however, he was quickly interrupted.
Just before the sword phantoms dissipated, Vergil appeared in front of Mundus, swinging his sword upward with great force. Having to split his attention in three directions, Mundus missed the moment when Dante leapt high into the air. Instead, he allowed the last of the sword phantoms to cause an inconsequential injury on his left arm and hastily moved his left sword to block Vergil's slash.
Yet again, Mundus found himself surprised. The power behind Vergil's slash was immense. And since he was not fully prepared when he blocked it, Mundus was thrown upward by the counterforce from his block.
Immediately after he was airborne, Mundus instincts kicked in and he looked upward. Spinning above him in an inverted position was Dante with his pistols drawn.
"Whoo… Let's get crazy." Dante said as he began pulling the triggers of his pistols rapidly.
*Bang!* *Bang!* *Bang!*
At the same time, back on the ground, Vergil had sheathed his sword once again. Then, as Dante began firing, Vergil also unsheathed his sword at high speed, sending forth a slash of demonic energy that tore the fabric of space as it approached Mundus.
As the attacks drew near, Mundus mask of benevolence began to slip. At the same time, his demonic energy began to increase while his skin took on a greyish hue, his eyes turned red, and the skin around his eyes began to show cracks. On top of that, the kind smile he wore previously had morphed into a disdainful sneer.
Then, with great speed, Mundus began spinning the sword in his right hand, blocking all the incoming bullets. At the same time, he pushed his demonic energy into the sword in his left hand and swung it forcefully at the energy slash from Vergil.
*Clang~~~!*
When Mundus' swords met the attacks from opposite directions, his momentum was stopped completely, causing him to simply float in place until the attacks either stopped or dissipated.
Extending his wings as he continued to fire his pistols, Dante let loose one more barrage before flying past the bullets he fired and throwing one of his pistols toward the ground. Then, he drew Rebellion.
At the same time, Vergil also extended his wings. Then, he shot upward and caught the pistol Dante threw down at him.
A moment later, Dante and Vergil flew past Mundus from opposite directions. And while his swords were both preoccupied, they slashed their own swords at his back and chest, leaving large gashes in their wake.
Then, just as they passed Mundus, they both turned, facing Mundus once again with one of Dante's pistols in their off hands, pointed at Mundus head from opposite directions.
"Jackpot." The twins said in unison.
However, just before they pulled the triggers, all three combatants felt a massive surge of demonic energy from the opposite side of the town. Taking advantage of their momentary lapse in concentration, Mundus swung his swords at the twins, leaving bloody gashes on their chests, and knocked them away.
*Boom!* *Boom!*
Due to Mundus attacks, Dante and Vergil slammed into the ground at high speed, leaving small craters on impact.
A moment later, Dante and Vergil picked themselves up and climbed out of the craters their falls created. At the same time, a massive wave of red energy traveled around the town and decimated the landscape on either side of Kuoh for miles.
"Holy shit…" Dante muttered while observing the devastation [Enuma Elish] had caused. "Just what kind of attack does damage like that?"
"I don't know, but I'm sure Scathach and Lancer are facing a quite powerful foe." Vergil added.
Nodding his head as the attack raged on, Dante could feel his regeneration was much slower than normal. He figured that Vergil was in the same situation as well. However, neither of them was weak enough that a slash across the chest would hamper their combat effectiveness.
Dante then turned toward Mundus who was glaring at him and his brother with hatred in his eyes. Then, before Mundus could speak, Dante pointed Rebellion at him and spoke first.
"That was really rude, big guy." Dante said. "Don't you know its bad manners to attack like that while we were looking at what was happening on the other side of town?"
Hearing Dante's stupid question that was clearly meant to mock him, Mundus rage, along with his demonic energy, spiked to its peak.
"I've had enough of this!" Mundus bellowed. "I have no time to waste with the sons of that human sympathizer."
An instant later, Mundus' demonic energy exploded outward in all directions, engulfing his surroundings. Feeling the demonic energy coming towards them, Dante and Vergil swung their swords, trying to cut an opening in the expanding sphere of demonic energy.
To their surprise, however, the energy spere passed by them harmlessly. A moment later, their visions went black. Yet another moment later, they found themselves floating in a black void. When they looked up, they saw a sky full of twinkling stars. And when they looked down, they saw an ocean of lava.
Noticing the lava, both Dante and Vergil extended their wings again. Then, when they were stabilized, they looked at each other.
"Where the hell are we?" Dante asked.
"I'm not sure." Vergil replied. "But it looks like one of those [Reality Marbles] that Scathach lectured us about."
"Ah… Now that you mention it---" Dante replied.
"You are in my domain, now." Mundus voice echoed through the area. "And in this domain, shall you meet your end."
"So, you were right." Dante said casually. "This really is one of those [Reality Marble] things."
"Yes, I believe so." Vergil replied.
Meanwhile, Mundus could feel himself growing angrier as the twins casually ignored him. Deciding to reveal himself, Mundus had taken on his true form, Standing at nearly five hundred feet (150 m) tall, Mundus currently looked like the massive statue of a god that had been ravaged by the passage of time with cracks running across its face that made its usually kind visage into something extremely sinister.
"*Whistle* That's one big bastard." Dante said, looking up at Mundus' figure. "I guess we'll have to kick it up a notch for this one, huh?"
Immediately after Dante's statement, he was covered in a black, flame-like aura. A moment later, the intensity of the flames dimmed enough for Dante's figure to be seen again. Instead of the red trench coat and black clothing he usually wore, he had grown an additional pair of wings while his body was covered in black metal/demonic stone like plates of armor with his face taking on more reptilian features. From the sides of his head, grew a pair of goat-like horns. While a second pair of smaller horns grew from the top of his head. Lastly, from just under his glowing, red eyes, a pair of incandescent red lines ran down his face and neck before crossing in the middle of his chest.
Vergil, on the other hand, was covered in a similar flame-like aura, though his was colored silver. And like Dante, his aura dimmed a moment later. When it did, he had a second pair of wings that were pointed downward and he was covered in silver, metallic/demonic stone-like plates. Though his armor resembled that of the armor samurai wore during the feudal era. His head also changed in shape, resembling that of a samurai helmet with a pair of curved, hollow horns growing from its sides. On top of that, the horns seemed to be venting excess demonic energy like exhaust pipes. And like his brother, a pair of lines, that were colored blue, ran down his face and neck, disappearing behind the armor-like plates that covered his body.
Like many of the members of Team DxD, Dante and Vergil also increased their power. Although they were not able to advance to the major god-rank in the few months after the team was formed, they were able to tap further into their devil heritage.
Using their swords, Rebellion and Yamato, they were able to increase the fusion between their human and demonic halves. While Vergil knew that his sword, Yamato, had the ability to split things, Dante was unaware that Rebellion was designed to do the opposite.
In fact, when Dante heard from Scathach and Chiron that his sword should be able to fuse his human and devil bloodlines perfectly if he ran himself through, he looked at both of them as if they were insane.
Vergil, on the other hand, would only need to cut himself with Yamato, separating his human side from his devil side. Then, after absorbing his devil side again, his bloodlines would be fused.
After hearing those explanations, the twins were skeptical at first. However, after some contemplation, they both took the leap of faith and succeeded in fusing their bloodlines.
After seeing the twins' new forms, Mundus anger grew even further. To him, they both, though not exact copies, resembled their father to an uncomfortable degree.
"I will end the bloodline of that cursed traitor." Mundus said, his voice reverberating through the space.
"We'll see about that." Vergil said in a disdainful tone before shooting forward.
As Vergil flew forward, he tossed the pistol he was still holding back toward Dante, who quickly holstered both pistols and flew after his brother.
Irritated that Dante and Vergil were taking the initiative to attack, Mundus raised his hands and pointed at the twins. A moment later, several of the stars in the sky began moving.
In response, Dante and Vergil were forced to take acrobatic, evasive maneuvers to avoid the incoming meteor sized attacks. However, even though they were slowed, they continued to move forward.
Eventually, when the twins were close enough that hurling any more meteors at them would result in Mundus harming himself. Mundus materialized a pair of swords like those he wielded earlier, though much bigger. Then, he began swinging them at Dante and Vergil skillfully.
Realizing that the difference in size made it impossible to block or parry the incoming attacks, Dante and Vergil continued to evade incoming attacks at high speed while making exciting, acrobatic, evasive maneuvers. And as often as they could, they inflicted damage by releasing their demonic energy through their sword swings.
"Vergil, we're leaving the equivalent of bug bites on this big son of a bitch." Dante said with a frown. "Got any ideas?"
"We need to hit a vital spot." Vergil said, avoiding another giant sword strike.
"No shit, Sherlock." Dante replied with an eye roll.
A moment later, the brothers made eye contact. Then, after holding eye contact for a few seconds, they both charged forward simultaneously with Vergil moving slightly faster.
Meanwhile, Mundus readied his swords to cleave through both of Sparda's sons. Just as Dante and Vergil entered his swords' range, he swung them down with great force.
In response, Vergil, who was still in front of Dante, slashed into the empty air with Yamato. Then, he slightly deviated from his flight path, avoiding the area he had just slashed and continued flying toward Mundus. An instant later, he was forced to divert his path again to avoid the giant's swords. He then injected as much demonic energy as he could into his wings and sped up even further.
Altering his flight path as little as possible, Vergil eventually reached his destination, Mundus' forehead. And as he approached, he began pumping demonic energy into Yamato. Unfortunately, his aim was entirely too obvious to Mundus' experienced eyes. So, without hesitation, he raised his swords to block the inevitable attack that would land on his forehead at the end of Vergil's charge.
"Ahh~~~~~~~~!" Mundus suddenly screamed after feeling a piercing pain in the back of his head.
A few moments ago, after Vergil slashed the empty space in front of him, Dante continued straight forward. As he did, he extended Rebellion in front of him, started saturating it with demonic energy, and began spinning like a drill. Then, he disappeared into the empty space that Vergil had slashed.
An instant later, Dante reappeared behind Mundus, still spiraling forward. However, this time his destination was the back of Mundus' head, exactly opposite of the spot Vergil would collide with if he kept on his course.
Unfortunately for Mundus, he did not notice Dante's disappearance. Considering that Dante had been flying just behind Vergil since the beginning while trying to use Vergil as cover, he thought that Dante was still behind him. However, that oversight would be his undoing.
After feeling the pain in the back of his head, Mundus flinched momentarily. But that moment was all that Vergil needed to close the distance to Mundus' forehead. And as he made is final approach, he, too, began spinning just as Dante had, burrowing straight through Mundus' forehead.
A moment later, when the tips of Rebellion and Yamato met inside Mundus head, the demonic energy that had been charged into both blades exploded outward, causing Mundus' head to explode like a watermelon that had been shot with a hunting rifle.
After that, Mundus' body fell toward the lava as the [Reality Marble] began to break down. A few moments later, Dante and Vergil reappeared outside of Kuoh and landed softly on the ground.
"Damn, that transformation, [Sin Devil Trigger], really puts a lot of strain on the body." Dante said, dropping his transformation as he flopped down on his back.
"Indeed." Vergil replied while dropping his own transformation before sitting ont eh ground. "It looks like much training is needed to master this state."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Dante said dismissively. "Now that that is over, why don't you call the rest of the team and give them a report?"
"No." Vergil said, turning his head away from Dante. "You do it."
"Why do you always have to be so difficult?" Dante asked in annoyance. "Just do it already."
"Why don't you make me?" Vergil asked in return.
"Maybe I will." Dante replied.
Then, the two brothers stared at each other, neither one willing to back down.
"Would you two give it a rest already?" Cu Chulainn asked while making his way to the exhausted brothers. "I'll make the call for you, just get back to the mansion and let Asia look at you and heal any injuries."
