It was morning, I felt better than yesterday. I stood waiting at the door for Dylan to get his books, so we could leave for class. Ann didn't call last night like she said she would, i guess she was busy but I was happy enough to know that I would see her in class today. It was math, a general class so she was definitely going to be there.
"Alright, let's go." Dylan came out handing me his books, so he could lock the door.
"Here." I handed them back as we took the stairs.
....
We got there just before lecture began so I couldn't look around for Ann. I looked back occasionally to where I was sure I had seen her sit twice before but she wasn't there.
Maybe she hadn't come yet ' I tried to tell myself even though I felt uneasy when I couldn't see her.
Halfway through the class and I still didn't see her walk into our lecture hall. There was no way she would be coming after now. I couldn't help but wonder if she was okay not to attend a general class. After the lecturer left and class was over, I let Dylan know that I planned to go see her, to check up on her.
"You did hear the man right?" Dylan asked referring to the math lecturer who gave us some unusual questions to try and solve.
"Yeah, I'll do that when I get back."
"There's twenty eight of these questions, do you hear yourself or you plan on having a carryover? You fail to do one of his assignments and he does that to you, that's how strict he is."
"I just want to know why she didn't come."
"Like you don't know you are gonna stay there till late, we submit this shit tommorow. It's actually better you attempt those questions than not submit any tommorow."
"I know, I know, alright come with me and see her."
"No."
"Seriously?" I asked him, not really expecting a quick no.
"Those questions are not looking easy, so I've got to start early to figure them out."
"Fine, I'll go alone." I sighed, walking ahead of him and flagging down a school cab. "I will try and be back before four." I said before getting into the cab.
....
"You? Where do I know you from?" Ann's roommate asked when she opened the door.
"Is Ann here?" I just asked, not really ready to answer her.
"Yes! It was you the other day."
"Is Ann inside?" I asked again.
"Yeah, she is, I'll let her know you are here." She said going inside and shutting the door. I sighed as I stood there waiting. Looking at my phone's lockscreen, it was almost three pm already.
"She's in our room." Her roommate was back, she opened the door so I could come in. I went directly in her room's direction, I still remembered how.
I peeked in at first, standing at the room's entrance, she was lying in bed, her eyes were shut, I wondered if she was sleeping.
"Go on." Her roommate said from behind me.
"Isn't she asleep?" I asked.
"No, she just weak."
"Weak?" I asked but this time, her roommate didn't answer, she just walked past me into the room.
"He's here, Ann." She said going to the cupboard on the mirror table and getting something before walking past me to leave. Ann opened her eyes when she said that.
"Heyy." I smiled walking in with my hands tucked in my pocket, since I was sure now she wasn't sleeping, I didn't want to disturb her before.
"You came to see me?" I heard her say before covering her face with her palms. "You should have called first, now you have to see me looking like this."
I didn't understand what she meant by me seeing her looking like that, she was covered from her chest to her legs with the blanket and all I could see was the purple strap of whatever she was wearing.
"I tried calling, you didn't pick your calls. Please stop covering your face." I chuckled finding it funny; what she was doing, I could still see hed lips even with her small fingers doing their best to hide her face.
"Really?" She removed her hands from her face and I quickly understood what she meant. Her face was somewhat pale and her eyes looked tired, like she was sick. "I didn't hear it ring."
"You are sick?" I found myself asking.
"No, Jerry, I'm pregnant and it got me feeling like hell since last night." She looked up at me from where she laid. "I know I look horrible."
"No." I quickly said to put her off that kind of thought. She didn't look horrible, she just looked sick.
"Yes, I do, don't lie to me." She sat up and shifted her position, making some space on the bed. "Sit, don't just stand there."
"You don't, really." I sat next to where she was laying down trying to convince her. She didn't say anything more. "So that's why you couldn't attend lectures today?"
"Obviously. I felt so weak everywhere before now, if you were hear earlier, you could have seen how bad it was. Thank goodness, I have a room mate, because honestly, it would be so much more fucked up if she wasn't here." She said and I thought about it, I thought about how much more fucked up, it would have been.
"Ann, do you have to do this?" Thinking about it now, I really felt scared her. "Do you have to keep it?" I refered to her pregnancy. I turned and she was looking at me.
"Yes." I heard her say in a faint voice.
"No, you don't, you fucking don't." I told her.
"Yes, I have to." I heard her again and she sounded like she was still trying to convince herself.
"Ann, we can't do this, okay, YOU can't do this, you've missed lectures like twice this week because of this, it's gonna start like this and soon you are missing lots of classes."
"Jerry, I...."
"What about exams, how are you gonna write, will you be able to make it to exams halls?" I didn't let her say what she wanted to. "Forget that, would you be able to read and prepare for your exams?"
